Bootstrap 5.3 progress bars use a .progress container for progress semantics and a nested .progress-bar for the visible fill. The examples below give you free, adaptable starting points for labeled, sized, colored, striped, and stacked bars, with the accessibility attributes in the current Bootstrap pattern.
Start with Bootstrap 5.3 markup
Give the outer .progress element the progress-bar role, an accessible name, and the current value range. Set the fill width on the inner .progress-bar.
<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Upload progress" aria-valuenow="75" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 75%"></div>
</div>
This is the Bootstrap 5.3 structure documented by Bootstrap’s Progress component documentation. In this version, the wrapper carries the ARIA progress semantics; the inner bar is the visual fill. Earlier Bootstrap markup placed these attributes differently. Bootstrap says that earlier structure is deprecated but remains supported until v6, so use the version-appropriate pattern when maintaining older projects.
Set the fill and height
Choose a fill width
Set the inner bar’s width with an inline style, a width utility, or your own CSS. For example, style="width: 60%" shows a fill at 60 percent. Keep the displayed fill consistent with aria-valuenow; otherwise, the visual and accessible progress values disagree.
#1 Best Overall
Make the bar taller
Set height on the .progress container. The nested bar follows the container’s height, so you do not need to size both elements separately.
<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Installation progress" aria-valuenow="40" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100" style="height: 1.5rem;">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 40%"></div>
</div>
Choose a label that stays readable
You can place a visible label inside the filled bar, such as “75%,” when there is enough room and contrast. Short fills can clip text, while longer labels may overlap the fill or become difficult to read. Bootstrap recommends putting a label outside the bar when text may overlap it; an external label also remains readable when the fill is small.

<p id="upload-label">Upload progress: 25%</p>
<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-labelledby="upload-label" aria-valuenow="25" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
<div class="progress-bar" style="width: 25%"></div>
</div>
For a visible label inside the fill, check that it fits at the smallest progress values your interface can show. The bar still needs an accessible name and value range even when the percentage is visible on screen.
Pick a visual treatment for the task
| Need | Bootstrap approach | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Compact or tall indicator | Change the height of .progress. |
The inner fill follows the container’s height. |
| Visible percentage or status | Put a short label inside the bar, or place it outside. | Use an external label if the text may overlap or be clipped. |
| One continuous task | Use one .progress with one .progress-bar. |
Keep the fill width and ARIA current value aligned. |
| Several portions of one total | Use Bootstrap’s stacked progress structure. | In Bootstrap 5.3, set each segment’s width on its .progress element inside .progress-stacked. |
| Different visual emphasis | Use background colors, stripes, or animated stripes. | These change appearance; provide text or another accessible cue for status. |
Use color without relying on it
Bootstrap documents background-color variants for progress bars. Color can reinforce a state, but color alone does not tell screen-reader users what the state means. Include meaningful text or another accessible cue, and ensure text and fills have sufficient contrast against their backgrounds.
Use stripes or animation carefully
Striped and animated-stripe options add visual texture or movement, not additional progress information. Keep the accessible name and current value tied to the task’s actual progress, and do not use animation as the only indication of status.
Build stacked progress bars
Stacked bars represent multiple portions within one progress display. Bootstrap 5.3 uses a .progress-stacked wrapper, with each segment represented by a .progress element containing its own .progress-bar. Set each segment’s width on that segment’s .progress element, following the structure in the Bootstrap 5.3 documentation. Choose names and values that make the meaning of the overall display and its segments clear to assistive technology.
