Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Yes, you can host some modded Minecraft servers for free—but not every modpack. Free plans are usually designed for small vanilla worlds and commonly provide about 1–2 GB of memory. Many modern modpacks need 6–12 GB or more, so large packs may fail to start, crash after players join, or become unstable as memory use grows.
Aternos is the most widely cited free option for Forge, Fabric and selected CurseForge packs. It uses an ad-supported panel, may place you in a startup queue, and stops empty servers. Those limits make it useful for testing a lightweight pack with a few friends, not a dependable home for a large pack such as All The Mods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “free modded Minecraft server hosting” really means
A free server usually comes with a fixed slice of shared hardware. The provider has to divide CPU time, storage and RAM among many users, so the free plan is deliberately constrained. Vanilla Minecraft can run acceptably in that environment because its memory footprint is relatively modest. A Forge or Fabric modpack adds hundreds of assets, libraries, world-generation systems, entities and background tasks.
The practical mismatch is memory. One hosting review contrasts roughly 1–2 GB on many free plans with 6–12 GB or more for modpacks. That is a reviewer’s general estimate rather than a universal specification, but it explains why a pack can launch on a computer and fail on a free server: a desktop may have 16 or 32 GB available, while the server process is capped much lower.

Free limits also change. RAM allocations, player caps, queue lengths and idle policies are volatile, and the figures below should be checked in the provider’s current panel before you upload a world.
Which free hosts can run mods?
The options are not equivalent. Some support Forge or Fabric; others support only plugins, which modify a vanilla or Paper server but do not load a client-side modpack.
| Option | Mod support | Free-tier limits or behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aternos | Java and Bedrock software choices include Forge, Fabric, Paper and Spigot; selected CurseForge modpacks are available through its panel. | Ad-supported. Reviews report an idle shutdown after about five minutes with no players and queues of roughly 2–10 minutes at busy times; another review reports waits up to 30 minutes. These figures are not confirmed by a current official limits page. | Testing a lightweight pack or playing occasionally with a small group. |
| Minehut | Plugin-oriented free tier; reviews state that Forge and Fabric are not supported. | Reviews report a 10-player maximum and 1 GB RAM. Treat both figures as subject to change. | Vanilla or plugin servers, not modpack servers. |
| FreeGameHost | Advertises free Minecraft hosting, but the cited listing is promotional rather than independent technical documentation. | Its promotion claims 4 GB RAM, no queue and 24/7 uptime. Verify those claims in the control panel and terms before relying on them. | A possible experiment if the advertised resources are actually assigned to your server. |
| OMGSERV | The cited free offering is vanilla-only. | No Forge or Fabric support in the described free plan. | Vanilla worlds, not modpacks. |
| Oracle Cloud free tier | It is general-purpose cloud infrastructure, not Minecraft-specific hosting. | Requires technical setup and a credit card; there is no Minecraft control panel or modpack support guarantee. | Experienced administrators willing to configure and maintain a server themselves. |
| ScalaCube free wording | Marketing language mentions modpacks, but the cited description can lead users to assume broader support than the actual free allocation provides. | Confirm the exact software, RAM and pack list for the free plan instead of relying on the headline. | Only after checking the plan details for your specific pack. |
Aternos is the clearest panel-based route for a free Forge or Fabric trial. It is not proof that every listed pack will perform well: its staff say they test packs to ensure they start and that basic play is possible, but they do not guarantee performance.

Can I run All The Mods on a free server?
Usually not reliably. “All The Mods” is a family of large packs, and requirements vary by release. A free server with around 1–2 GB cannot be expected to sustain one of the heavier releases. Even if the process starts, world generation, chunk loading and multiple players can push memory beyond the cap.
Aternos staff have explained that a free service cannot simply assign more RAM. In a forum reply dated around 2022, staff wrote that more memory was not possible because the service is 100% free. In another case, staff said a pack requiring at least 4 GB would not start with the available allocation and removed it from the pack list. Those statements describe Aternos policy at the time, not a guarantee about every current pack.
An unofficial 2021 user recollection put allocations at about 2,400 MB for Fabric and 2,500 MB for Forge. Because that was not an official specification and software versions change, use it only as historical context. Check the memory shown for your own server instead.

How to try a free Forge or Fabric server
Use this process before promising friends a long-running world. It minimizes the risk of spending hours configuring a pack that cannot fit the free allocation.
- Identify the exact pack and version. Record the Minecraft version, loader (Forge or Fabric), pack release and required Java version. “All The Mods” without a release number is not specific enough to evaluate.
- Check the host’s current software list. In the server panel, look for Forge, Fabric or a named CurseForge import. A plugin selector or Paper-only menu will not load a modpack.
- Find the actual RAM ceiling. Look for a displayed memory limit, not a general advertising claim. If the panel does not state RAM, assume the pack may be constrained and ask support before uploading it.
- Create a new test server. Do not use your only copy of an existing world. Select the matching Minecraft version and loader, then install the exact pack release.
- Match the client. Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader and modpack files. A server can be healthy while a client fails because of a mismatched mod, configuration or Java runtime.
- Start with one player. Watch the console for out-of-memory messages, repeated garbage collection, missing dependencies and watchdog timeouts. Let the server finish its first startup and generate a small area before inviting others.
- Test the stressful actions. Travel to new chunks, open machines or storage systems, use dimensions and restart the server. A pack that survives the title screen may still run out of memory during exploration.
- Back up before adding content. Download the world and configuration after each stable test. Free services can stop or remove inactive instances, and a failed update can corrupt a world.
Why a free modpack server crashes
It never reaches the “Done” state
The most likely cause is insufficient memory or an incompatible loader/mod combination. Remove the pack and test a smaller release, or choose a host with a larger confirmed allocation. Do not repeatedly restart a pack that is clearly exceeding the cap; queue systems may make each attempt slow without changing the result.
It starts, then crashes during play
Memory use can grow as chunks, entities and machines accumulate. Aternos community discussions warn that a pack may work initially and crash later as its usage rises. Reduce view and simulation distances, limit simultaneous players, avoid rapid exploration and remove optional high-cost mods where the pack author permits it. These changes may improve symptoms but cannot create RAM that the plan does not provide.

Only one player gets kicked
Check the client’s log and the server console for mismatched mod versions, missing dependencies or authentication errors. Confirm that everyone installed the same pack release rather than mixing an updated client with an older server.
The server is online but feels laggy
Lag is not always a memory failure. Shared CPU contention, world generation and a long queue can all affect the experience. Test at low player count and avoid generating unexplored terrain while several players are online. If tick delays continue in a small test area, the free host may not have enough CPU capacity for the pack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Queues, ads and idle shutdowns
A free service pays for infrastructure through advertising and shared capacity. On Aternos, the panel is ad-supported and busy periods can place a start request in a queue. Review coverage gives conflicting estimates: one source reports approximately 2–10 minutes at peak and another reports waits of up to 30 minutes. Since no current official queue guarantee was available, treat those numbers as indicative only.

Reviews also commonly report that an empty Aternos server shuts down after about five minutes. The exact rule should be confirmed in the current panel. Plan sessions around manual starts, and never treat a free instance as an always-on server for a public community.
Some providers may require an account, block certain VPN or proxy connections, or impose verification steps. A general cloud offer may require a payment card even when compute is advertised as free. Read the sign-up and inactivity terms before uploading irreplaceable data.

Move to paid hosting when the pack requires more memory than the free cap, when several players explore new terrain simultaneously, or when the world must remain available without a queue. Aternos staff have suggested choosing a different pack or a paid host for heavy modpacks; one cited reviewer places typical paid pricing around $5–$12 per month, but that is an opinion from a single review and not a current price quote.
Paid plans do not automatically solve every problem. Confirm the included RAM, CPU allocation, storage, backup policy, supported loader and ability to upload a custom pack. Ask whether the advertised memory is dedicated to your server or shared, and whether taxes, setup fees or automatic renewal apply.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose free hosting if you have a lightweight Forge or Fabric pack, one to a few players, and you can tolerate ads, manual starts and possible queues.
- Choose a plugin server if you only need server-side features. Plugins are not a substitute for a client modpack and will not run Forge or Fabric mods.
- Use a technical cloud setup only if you can administer Linux, Java, firewall rules, backups and updates yourself.
- Choose paid hosting when the pack documentation calls for 4 GB or more, when free tests crash over time, or when uptime and predictable performance matter.
The decisive check is simple: compare the pack’s documented server memory requirement with the host’s current, explicitly stated allocation. If the requirement is above the free limit, no panel setting can make that pack reliable. For small packs, a free Forge or Fabric server can be a useful trial; for a heavy pack, it is more realistic to reduce the pack, accept frequent troubleshooting, or budget for a host with enough memory.
