Yes, you can host a BeamNG.drive multiplayer server for free by running the standalone BeamMP Server on a computer you control. The software itself is free, and the host does not need BeamNG.drive or a graphics card. The trade-off is that your computer, internet connection, electricity and network configuration become the hosting service.
Free self-hosting is a good fit for a few friends and scheduled sessions. A paid virtual private server (VPS) or managed host becomes worthwhile when you need 24/7 availability, a public community, predictable latency or a machine that is not also running your game.

BeamNG.drive does not provide the dedicated multiplayer server in this arrangement. Multiplayer is supplied by BeamMP, a third-party multiplayer mod and its standalone server application. You download and run the server software separately from the game client.
Self-hosting removes a monthly hosting bill, but it is not cost-free in every practical sense. The host machine must remain powered, your upload bandwidth is used by every connected player, and you are responsible for router settings, firewall rules, updates, backups and troubleshooting. If your home connection uses a restrictive carrier-grade NAT, you may also be unable to accept incoming connections without help from your ISP or a relay service.

What the host computer does—and does not—need
- The standalone server does not require BeamNG.drive to be installed on the host.
- A GPU is not required because the server runs simulation and networking rather than rendering the game.
- Windows and Linux are supported; the available download must match your operating system and architecture.
- The server uses a small amount of disk space for the application, while maps, vehicles, plugins and logs can make the installation grow.
Players still need their own compatible BeamNG.drive installation and the BeamMP client-side mod. A server cannot make an unsupported game version or mod combination work automatically.
Is a free home server worth it?
For a private group, usually yes. You can start and stop the server when friends want to play, keep control of the configuration and avoid recurring hosting charges. The arrangement is less attractive for a public server: the host PC must be online whenever players expect to join, a game session competes with the server for CPU and upload capacity, and a home connection may change its public IP or suffer evening congestion.

Use this decision rule:
- Choose home self-hosting for occasional sessions, a small group and someone willing to administer the machine.
- Choose a dedicated home PC when you want to keep playing on your main computer while the server remains available.
- Choose a VPS or managed plan when uptime, a stable address, public discovery and reduced maintenance matter more than eliminating every monthly cost.
BeamMP server requirements: official minimums versus practical capacity
The BeamMP FAQ lists approximately 50+ MiB of usable RAM excluding operating-system overhead, a CPU above 1 GHz with multicore preferred, 5–10 Mb/s of upload bandwidth, Windows or Linux, no GPU and roughly 10 MiB of disk space before adding mods and plugins. The project README gives a broader 30–100 MiB usable-RAM estimate and warns that these figures are guesstimates that can change between releases.
Those figures describe the server process, not a comfortable public installation. The operating system, map files, plugins, logs and other applications need memory and storage. Vehicle physics is synchronized across players, so fast single-thread CPU performance is generally more important than simply adding cores. More players also increase outbound traffic and simulation work.

A third-party setup guide gives more conservative planning estimates of about 2 GB free for four players, 4 GB for eight and 8 GB for 16, with at least 5 Mbps of upload per group of four players. These are practical recommendations rather than BeamMP specifications. Another guide places the practical stability limit around 30 or more players, where synchronized physics can become unstable. Treat that figure as a warning threshold, not a supported maximum.
How to host a BeamMP server at home
1. Prepare a suitable machine and connection
Use a wired connection if possible and disable sleep or hibernation on a machine that must remain available. Check your measured upload speed while other household traffic is active. If the same PC will run BeamNG.drive, leave CPU, memory and upload headroom for the game; a separate or spare computer gives the server more predictable performance.

2. Download the standalone server
Get the BeamMP Server build for Windows x86_64 or a supported Debian/Ubuntu environment. The version identified by a 2026 setup guide as the latest stable release is v3.9.3, released May 23, 2026. That guide also identifies v3.9.4 as a pre-release and says its information was not verified against the project’s release page. Check the current BeamMP documentation and release page immediately before downloading because server and client versions can change.
Extract the archive into a dedicated folder rather than a temporary downloads directory. Keep the executable, configuration file, plugins and logs together so that backups and upgrades are straightforward.

3. Create the server configuration
Start the server once to generate its configuration files, then stop it and edit the generated ServerConfig.toml (the exact fields can vary by release). Set a recognizable server name, the desired player limit and your map or mod settings. Leave the network port at the default 30814 unless you have a reason to change it. Save the file as plain text and preserve the TOML syntax; a missing quote or malformed value can prevent startup.
Keep private test sessions private while you validate the setup. A private server can be useful for checking maps and plugins before exposing them to the public listing.
4. Obtain and protect an AuthKey
Public listing requires a valid BeamMP AuthKey, the configuration value that lets the server communicate with BeamMP’s backend. Set the server to Private = false only after the key is installed and the rest of the configuration works. A published setup guide reports that the server refuses to start without a valid key; follow the current instructions for generating and placing yours.
Treat the key like a password. Do not post it in screenshots, public repositories or support logs. If it is exposed, revoke or replace it through the BeamMP account process and update the local configuration.

5. Allow the server through the host firewall
Create inbound firewall rules for the server application and for TCP and UDP port 30814. Applying only one protocol produces confusing partial failures: the process may appear online locally while players cannot complete the connection. On Linux, configure the distribution firewall and confirm that the rule survives a reboot. On Windows, approve the application on the network profile you actually use rather than allowing it only on a temporary private profile.
6. Forward the port on a home router
- Give the host computer a reserved local address through the router’s DHCP reservation feature.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page and forward external port
30814to that local address. - Create both TCP and UDP entries, using the same internal and external port.
- Apply the router changes and restart the server if the router requires it.
- Test from outside your home network, such as through a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from the host PC does not prove that internet clients can reach it.
If the router has no usable public IPv4 address, you may be behind carrier-grade NAT. In that case, normal forwarding will not work; ask the ISP whether a public address is available or use a hosted machine instead. Do not expose unrelated router administration ports just to make BeamMP reachable.
7. Launch, test and monitor
Run the server executable from its installation folder and watch the console for configuration, authentication and backend messages. Join locally first, then have one remote player test the public route. Add maps and plugins one at a time so that a failed addition can be identified quickly. Keep copies of the configuration and mod list before every upgrade.

Player count is constrained by simulation work and upstream traffic, not just by the tiny memory footprint of the base process. Because BeamMP synchronizes vehicle physics, a processor with strong per-core performance can outperform a higher-core but slower chip for this workload.

These estimates are not guarantees. A heavily modded map, dense traffic or physics-intensive vehicles can reduce the practical limit, while a lightweight private session may run comfortably below the published minimums.

No reliable VPS or managed-host price is established here, so compare current provider pages rather than relying on old “cheap server” lists. The important question is what you are buying: continuous power, a stable network path and less administration, not a different BeamMP physics engine.
Common failures and fixes
The server starts but nobody can join
- Confirm that both TCP and UDP 30814 are allowed in the host firewall.
- Verify the router forwards to the host’s current local address, not an address that changed after reboot.
- Check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic.
- Have a remote player test; a local loopback test can succeed even when internet access is blocked.
The server is not listed publicly
- Check that
Private = falseis set only for the public configuration. - Recheck the AuthKey for whitespace, truncation or expiration.
- Read the startup log for backend communication errors.
- Confirm that the server version and required client-side components are current.
Players report lag or physics instability
- Watch single-core CPU utilization and server tick behavior rather than total CPU percentage alone.
- Reduce the player limit or remove the newest map, vehicle or plugin to isolate the workload.
- Stop downloads, cloud sync and other upload-heavy applications on the home connection.
- Test with a lightweight map before concluding that the network or hardware is inadequate.
An update breaks the installation
Keep a dated backup of ServerConfig.toml, plugins, maps and the known-good server binary. Read the release notes before replacing files, update the server and client components together when required, and restore the previous binary if a newly installed plugin or build prevents startup.
When paying is the sensible choice
Pay for hosting when the cost of interruption is higher than the subscription: a community that expects to join at any time, events with a published schedule, or a host who cannot leave a home PC powered continuously. A VPS gives you a machine that is normally online and avoids home-router forwarding, but you still administer the operating system, firewall and BeamMP files. A managed service can reduce that work, although its control panel, mod policy and support scope should be checked before purchase.
Stay with free self-hosting when your group is small, sessions are planned and you are comfortable with occasional downtime. Start privately, measure CPU and upload use with real players, and move to a paid environment only when uptime or administration—not the initial software cost—becomes the limiting factor.
