There is no single best free bakery WordPress theme. For online cake sales, the Colorlib comparison points to Astra’s Cake Shop starter; for a dedicated bakery presentation, Bakery and Pastry is the focused option; and for a small shop that mainly needs a menu, hours and contact details, Bakes and Cakes is the closer fit. Your choice should follow the site’s job, not the prettiest demo.
Start with the bakery site you actually need
A bakery website usually has a compact set of tasks: show the products, explain opening hours, provide the address and contact method, and make ordering clear. A site selling celebration cakes online has a different job from a brochure site for a neighborhood shop. Recipe publishing, table reservations and a one-page launch site add different requirements.

Aigars Silkalns, author of the September 10, 2026 Colorlib comparison, describes the priority this way: “A bakery site has a short list of jobs and it is not the one most themes optimise for. People arrive wanting three things: what you make, when you are open, and where you are.” That is editorial framing rather than a measured consumer study, but it is a useful test for any demo.

- Online shop: Check product pages, cart, checkout, delivery or pickup information and order confirmation on a phone.
- Custom-order bakery: Make flavor, size, date, allergy and pickup fields understandable; a general product grid may not be enough.
- Recipe or editorial site: Prioritize readable post templates, categories and recipe presentation over a sales-first homepage.
Quick comparison of the nine themes

| Restaurant and Cafe | Bakery or café with menu and reservations | The official listing describes bakery and café use, menu and reservation sections, WooCommerce readiness and responsive design. |
| Restaurant Recipe | Recipe publishing | Colorlib assigns it the recipe-focused role; the article’s role assignment was not independently verified against the official listing here. |
| Astra | Online cake shop using the Cake Shop starter | Colorlib presents the Cake Shop starter as its online-sales choice; the specific starter claims were not independently verified here. |
| OceanWP | Bakery shop demo | Colorlib assigns it a bakery-shop demo role; the article’s demo and feature claims were not independently verified here. |
| Kadence | Coffee shop or roaster starter adapted for a bakery | Colorlib assigns it coffee-shop and roaster starter roles; its reported mobile test was the fastest of the nine. |
| Zakra | Café starter | Colorlib assigns it a café starter role that can be adapted to a bakery. |
| Illdy | One-page bakery site | Colorlib assigns it a one-page role; this suits a compact presentation rather than a large catalog. |
The three strongest role-based recommendations above come from Colorlib’s September 2026 article, not an independently verified ranking. WordPress.org listing information is also time-sensitive: versions, update dates, installation counts, ratings, demos and free-tier features can change.

The nine themes, explained
Bakery and Pastry: the purpose-built starting point
The official WordPress.org listing describes Bakery and Pastry as a free theme for bakers, restaurants and pastry shops. It lists block-editor patterns and styles, template editing, e-commerce support and the Food & drink feature tag. The listing reports version 1.5, an update on May 22, 2026, and more than 2,000 active installations.
That combination makes it a logical first inspection when the business identity is unmistakably bakery-led. Before committing, replace the demo content with your real menu, prices and photography. Check whether the product, gallery and contact templates still look coherent when you remove the sample sections.
Bakes and Cakes: compact menu-and-contact presentation
Bakes and Cakes is listed for bakery, restaurant and café sites, with e-commerce and Food & drink features. WordPress.org reports more than 800 active installations and an update on February 18, 2026. Colorlib’s article reports 4.7 stars from 15 reviews; that rating and review count are publisher-reported snapshots, not a permanent quality score.

Its role in the comparison is a small bakery that needs to explain what it sells and how to reach the shop. Test the menu hierarchy with your own categories—bread, pastries, cakes and seasonal items—rather than assuming the demo’s arrangement will fit.
Restaurant and Cafe: useful when reservations matter
The official listing describes Restaurant and Cafe as suitable for bakery and café sites. It includes menu and reservation sections, WooCommerce readiness and responsive design. The listing reports version 1.2.6, updated February 6, 2026, with more than 1,000 active installations.
This is a better functional match for a café that also takes bookings than for a bakery that only needs a product catalog. Confirm that the reservation workflow you intend to use is supplied by a plugin or service; “reservation section” in a theme does not by itself create a booking system.
Restaurant Recipe: choose it for publishing recipes
Colorlib places Restaurant Recipe in the recipe-publishing category. That makes it relevant when the site’s main content is instructions, ingredients and posts rather than a transactional cake catalog. The comparison’s role and feature claims were not independently verified against the official directory listing in this review, so inspect the current listing and demo before building around a specialized template.
Astra with the Cake Shop starter: commerce-oriented setup
Colorlib identifies Astra’s Cake Shop starter as its online-sales pick. A starter site can shorten the design phase, but it is still a starting layout: product images, tax or delivery information, pickup rules, stock handling and checkout behavior come from your commerce configuration as well as the theme. Open the cart and checkout on a phone before importing a large amount of content.
OceanWP: a general theme with a bakery-shop demo
Colorlib assigns OceanWP a bakery-shop demo. This type of general-purpose theme can be useful when you expect the business to expand beyond a simple bakery page, but the demo may depend on additional templates or plugins. Rebuild the key customer path—homepage to product or menu page to contact or checkout—using only the components you plan to keep.
Kadence: strong reported mobile result, flexible starter direction
Colorlib associates Kadence with coffee-shop and roaster starters that can be adapted to a bakery. In its controlled comparison, Kadence also produced the best reported Lighthouse score and the smallest page weight among the nine. Treat those figures as a single test condition, not a guarantee: your images, hosting, plugins and settings determine the live result.
Zakra: café starter for a broader food business
Colorlib assigns Zakra a café starter role. That can suit a bakery-café where seating, drinks and food categories share equal billing. Replace generic café calls to action with bakery-specific actions such as “Order a birthday cake,” “View today’s pastries” or “Find pickup hours,” then verify that the navigation remains clear on small screens.

Illdy: one-page option for a short launch site
Colorlib positions Illdy as a one-page site. A single page can work for a new bakery with a short menu, address, hours and contact form. It becomes awkward when you need dozens of products, long recipe posts, detailed allergen notes or separate ordering flows. Use distinct sections and descriptive headings so visitors can jump directly to the information they need.
What the reported performance test actually says
Colorlib says it installed the free themes on the same clean WordPress site, used identical content and no extra plugins, then measured mobile homepages with Google Lighthouse. The results below are Colorlib’s 2026 figures. They are not tests reproduced for this article and should not be treated as a universal speed ranking.
| Theme | Page weight | Requests | Lighthouse score | LCP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kadence | 328 KB | 17 | 96/100 | 2.5 seconds |
| Astra | 425 KB | 14 | 92/100 | 3.2 seconds |
| Zakra | 451 KB | 17 | 91/100 | 3.1 seconds |
| OceanWP | 802 KB | 29 | 72/100 | 5.3 seconds |
| Illdy | 1,086 KB | 38 | 65/100 | 6.8 seconds |
| Bakery and Pastry | 1,136 KB | 18 | 63/100 | 6.5 seconds |
| Restaurant Recipe | 1,213 KB | 34 | 66/100 | 7.4 seconds |
| Restaurant and Cafe | 2,246 KB | 28 | 56/100 | 12.3 seconds |
| Bakes and Cakes | 2,281 KB | 28 | 56/100 | 13 seconds |
LCP, or Largest Contentful Paint, is the time until the main visible content is rendered. A bakery homepage with a large hero photograph can score very differently after you compress images, remove demo sections or add a shop plugin. Measure the finished page on your own host before treating a theme choice as a performance decision.
Choose by business model, not by screenshot
If customers mainly need directions and hours
Use a layout that puts the address, opening hours, phone number and menu link in the header or first screen. Add a dedicated contact page with a map, parking or pickup instructions and a click-to-call number. A small menu with clear prices is more useful than a crowded animation-heavy homepage.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you sell standard cakes or pastries online
Inspect the entire order path before importing the demo: product variation selection, add-to-cart behavior, cart totals, checkout fields, confirmation email and mobile payment flow. A theme can style those screens, but the commerce plugin and your configuration control much of the behavior. Add delivery zones, lead times and pickup windows where customers can see them before payment.
If every order is customized
Standard product grids may not capture design consultations, inscription text, dietary restrictions or event dates. Decide whether you need a form, an inquiry workflow or configurable products. Put the required information in the first contact step and explain how quickly the bakery responds; do not force customers to infer the process from a generic “Shop now” button.
If recipes drive traffic
Prioritize typography, category navigation, ingredient formatting and a readable single-post template. Keep commercial calls to action present but secondary. Test long recipe titles, step lists and photographs on a phone, where narrow columns and sticky elements can make instructions difficult to follow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate a theme before you build on it
- Install the candidate on a staging site or a new test WordPress installation.
- Open Appearance → Themes → Add New, search the exact theme name, install it and activate it. For a block theme, inspect Appearance → Editor; for a classic theme, inspect the Customizer or the theme’s documented settings.
- Replace demo content with five real items: one product photo, one menu category, your actual opening hours, the shop address and a phone number.
- Review the homepage, menu or product archive, single item, contact page and 404 page at phone width and desktop width.
- Check keyboard focus, heading order, color contrast, link labels and whether important information remains visible when images are blocked.
- If selling online, create a test product and complete a test order from product page through confirmation. Check required fields, shipping or pickup wording and confirmation messages.
- Run a mobile performance test after images and plugins are added. Record the page weight, requests and LCP for your own site rather than copying a demo score.
- Only then import additional starter sections or spend time styling colors, fonts and photography.
Making a free theme work for a real bakery
Build a high-information header
Show the bakery name, a menu or shop link, opening-hours access and a contact action. If the address is a major conversion point, include a map link and nearby landmark in the contact area rather than hiding it in an image.
Use product photography strategically
Resize photographs to the display dimensions, use modern compressed formats where your WordPress setup supports them, and avoid loading a full gallery before the visitor reaches the menu. The controlled Colorlib test used identical content; your oversized hero image can erase the advantage of a lighter theme.
Keep menu information accessible
Do not make prices available only inside a PDF or a carousel. HTML text is easier to search, read on phones and update when seasonal products change. Include allergen or dietary notes in the same place as the item description when possible.
Separate theme work from plugin work
The theme controls presentation and templates. E-commerce, forms, reservations, maps and advanced product options usually require plugins or external services. Confirm compatibility and update activity before depending on a plugin-specific template.
Free does not mean identical to the demo
WordPress.org listings identify Bakery Cafe and Restaurant and Cafe as free themes with optional paid commercial upgrades or support. Colorlib describes Bakes and Cakes as free with a Pro option. The practical question is which functions remain in the free tier: starter templates, typography controls, headers, shop layouts, support and updates can differ. Read the current listing and upgrade description before designing around a feature visible only in a premium demonstration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Theme versions, update dates, active installation totals, ratings and available demos change. Recheck those details immediately before launch, especially if the site will process orders or collect customer information.
Additional free options outside the nine-theme comparison
Two other WordPress.org listings surfaced in the broader search. Bakery Cafe describes use for bakery, café, restaurant and food businesses and reports e-commerce features. Panadero Bakery is listed with e-commerce and Food & drink features. They are alternatives to inspect, not part of Colorlib’s named nine and not ranked against them by the reported performance test.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the most decorative demo: A beautiful hero section cannot compensate for hidden hours, prices or address details.
- Assuming “e-commerce” means ready-to-sell: Verify cart, checkout, payment, delivery and pickup behavior with your actual configuration.
- Importing every starter section: Extra sliders, galleries and fonts add requests and make the customer path harder to scan.
- Ignoring mobile checkout: A product page that looks fine on desktop can produce clipped variation controls or an impractical form on a phone.
- Building before checking update status: Confirm the current WordPress.org listing, update date and compatibility notes before launch.
- Putting critical information in images: Hours, prices and contact details should be selectable text, not text baked into a photograph.
A practical decision rule
Pick the theme whose templates make your primary task obvious with real content installed. For a bakery-led identity, begin with Bakery and Pastry. For a small menu-and-contact site, evaluate Bakes and Cakes. For online sales, test Astra’s Cake Shop starter end to end rather than judging its screenshot. If mobile speed is your first constraint, Kadence is the strongest result in Colorlib’s controlled 2026 test, but validate it after adding your own images and commerce tools.
