A “free background remover” can be built in more than one way, and the choice affects where image processing happens, what it costs to operate, and what users should know about their images. The post titled “I Built My Own Free Background Remover” is associated with software engineer and indie hacker Max/Wang on DEV Community, but the accessible profile does not reveal the project’s implementation details. That means its model, privacy practices, performance, and results cannot be confirmed from the title alone.
What the title does—and does not—tell us
The title identifies a build story about a free background-removal tool. It does not establish how the tool works, whether it processes images on a server or on the user’s device, what formats it accepts, or how well it handles difficult edges such as hair and transparent objects. Without those details, it would be misleading to attribute a particular technology stack, privacy guarantee, price, or accuracy claim to Max/Wang’s project.

That account is an example, not evidence of Max/Wang’s architecture or a requirement for building a remover.

Remote processing can make a tool available without asking every user’s device to run the model, but it creates API usage costs and means images are sent away from the device for processing. A responsible implementation should make that data flow clear and explain applicable retention and deletion practices; the available account does not establish policies for Max/Wang’s tool.
Processing in the browser
A separate creator’s search-result excerpt describes an alternative: a background remover that processes images in the browser, exports PNG files, and can package multiple results in a ZIP. The excerpt also mentions an approximately 40 MB model download on first use. The page could not be opened, so those are low-confidence details about a different example, not verified behavior or performance guidance for the title’s project.

Local browser processing can avoid sending an image to a server if implemented as described, but users may need to download model files and have a capable device. The excerpt alone does not verify the tool’s privacy behavior, compatibility, speed, or output quality.

Wally Ulysses’s separate account shows how a free tier can coexist with usage costs. The author described one free try without signing up, three more free credits after account creation, and paid credits or subscriptions. They reported a remove.bg cost of $0.20 per image and stated margins of 45–65%, depending on plan. These are figures from that builder’s account, published in 2026; they are not current provider terms, general market benchmarks, or figures for Max/Wang’s project.

For any tool introduced as free, check the practical details rather than inferring them from the label:

- Processing location: Does the tool explain whether images stay on the device or are uploaded to a server?
- Image handling: Does it identify supported formats and export formats, and explain what happens to uploaded files?
- Free-use limits: Is “free” unlimited, a one-time try, or a limited number of credits?
- Device demands: If processing is local, does the tool require a model download or a capable device?
- Edge quality: Check the actual output on hair, fine details, and transparent or overlapping objects; the title and available adjacent accounts provide no verified quality results for Max/Wang’s project.
What can be concluded about Max/Wang’s project
The available information supports only that a DEV Community profile for Max/Wang, a software engineer and indie hacker, is associated with the exact title “I Built My Own Free Background Remover.” It does not support claims about how the project was built or how it performs. Wally Ulysses’s separate post and the inaccessible browser-local example show that builders can make different architectural and monetization choices, but neither should be confused with Max/Wang’s implementation.
