The best free audio converter depends on the formats you need and whether you also want to edit audio. Audacity is a practical choice for conversion alongside editing; VLC is worth considering if you already use its media player and need broad format support. Neither is established as the fastest or highest-quality converter by the available evidence.
How to choose a free audio converter
Start with the exact source and destination formats, then check the tool’s current documentation for any required codec or add-on. A program that opens a file is not necessarily able to export it in the format you want.
- Format compatibility: Confirm both input and output support, including any required library.
- Workflow: Decide whether you need straightforward conversion, audio editing, batch processing, or audio extraction from an unprotected video.
- Quality controls: For the specific output format, check whether the tool lets you set codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel configuration.
- Platform: Check the official download and installation guidance for your operating system and software version.
- File handling: Desktop software can let you work without uploading a file to an online converter. That alone does not establish a privacy guarantee; review the service’s own terms before uploading sensitive audio.
Which converter fits your needs?
Audacity: conversion with editing
Audacity can export common formats including WAV, AIFF, AAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Its available export options depend on format. Some formats, including M4A and WMA, require the optional FFmpeg library, according to the Audacity support guidance and audio-format manual.
Audacity is a sensible fit when you need to edit a recording as well as convert it. Installation details vary by platform and version; Audacity’s current guidance says MP3 export is included by default on Windows and macOS, while other format support may require additional setup. Check the instructions for your own installation before relying on a particular export option.

VLC: a familiar player with broad format support
VLC is a free, open-source media player with downloads for desktop and mobile platforms. VideoLAN lists audio formats and codecs including MP3, AAC, Vorbis, AC3, WMA, FLAC, and ALAC on its feature list, and provides downloads on its official site. That supports VLC as a familiar option to investigate when you already use it or need broad media compatibility; it does not establish that VLC is easier or produces better conversion results than alternatives.
Choose output settings with sound quality in mind
Changing a file’s format does not automatically improve its sound. WAV and AIFF are uncompressed formats, while AAC is lossy. A conversion from one lossy format to another can discard additional audio information. Choose settings based on the intended use, and keep the original if you may need to export again later.

For example, if you need an MP3 copy for a device or application, export from the best-quality source available rather than converting an already compressed copy when you can avoid it. If the destination accepts an uncompressed format, WAV or AIFF can avoid an additional lossy encoding step, though the resulting file will be larger.

- Identify the file’s actual format. Use the file’s properties or a trusted media application rather than relying only on its filename extension.
- Confirm the destination. Check what the device, app, or recipient accepts; “audio file” is not specific enough to choose an export format.
- Check tool support and dependencies. In Audacity, consult the current format documentation and install optional FFmpeg only if your desired workflow requires it.
- Select appropriate export settings. Choose the codec and any available bitrate, sample-rate, and channel settings for the destination. The exact controls vary by format and software version.
- Test the exported file. Open it in the application or device where you plan to use it, and compare it with the original if sound quality matters.
DRM-protected audio cannot be treated like an ordinary file
Audacity’s FAQ says that DRM-protected media files cannot be imported. Optional FFmpeg can help Audacity import audio from many unprotected video files, but that is not a way to bypass digital restrictions. Use media you have permission to convert and follow the relevant service and copyright rules.

When a free converter may not be the answer
If a format is unsupported, first check whether the application needs an optional library and whether your operating system has a different installation requirement. If the file is protected, a converter cannot make it freely importable. If you are considering an online service instead, verify its supported formats, limits, and file-handling terms directly; those details are not established here.
