The best free Astro theme depends on the job your site must do. Use Starlight when documentation is the priority, AstroPaper or Cactus for publishing, and AstroWind for a marketing or launch page. Start in Astro’s official theme directory, filter by category, technology, and pricing, then inspect the project repository for current Astro support, license terms, maintenance activity, and the features you actually need.
What counts as a free Astro theme?
Astro’s ecosystem includes more than interchangeable visual skins. A listing may be a complete theme, a starter project, a documentation framework, a UI kit, or a component collection. “Free” generally means the digital code can be obtained without paying the listed theme price; it does not mean that hosting, a custom domain, premium integrations, development time, or support are included.
The official Astro theme directory is the safest starting point because it organizes listings by site category, technology, and pricing, including free and paid entries. Categories cover blogs, documentation, business sites, landing pages, portfolios, e-commerce, SaaS projects, UI kits, and starter templates. Directory listings change, so treat a description as a way to discover a project rather than as a permanent promise about its compatibility or maintenance.
A third-party catalog, Get Astro Themes, reported 362 free resources in its complete collection in August 2026. That is the catalog’s own count on that date, not an independently verified total for Astro’s entire ecosystem. It is useful for showing the breadth of the market, but you should still evaluate each project at its repository.

Quick matches by site purpose
| Site goal | Candidate | Why it fits | Checks before adoption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documentation or developer portal | Starlight | Positioned as Astro’s documentation framework, with full-text search, internationalization, sidebar navigation, and dark mode. | Confirm current Astro compatibility, required integrations, search behavior, and how much of the navigation and styling you can change. |
| Blog or personal publishing | AstroPaper | A blog-focused setup described with search, light and dark modes, archives, tags, and RSS. | Check repository activity, license, content workflow, and whether its styling and post structure match your editorial needs. |
| Minimal personal site or blog | Cactus | Described with content collections, MDX support, search, and RSS while keeping a lightweight publishing focus. | Verify the current repository state and whether its smaller feature set covers your navigation, taxonomy, and deployment requirements. |
| Marketing, product, or launch page | AstroWind | Presented as a landing and marketing starter; a June 2026 repository check reported Astro v6 and Tailwind CSS v4. | Recheck versions, repository destination and ownership, license, and whether its page sections fit your funnel instead of requiring a rewrite. |
| Portfolio, business, store, SaaS, or another niche | Official Astro directory listings | The directory includes current examples across these categories, so you can begin with the information architecture rather than a generic blog template. | Inspect the linked project itself. A directory listing alone does not establish quality, accessibility, licensing, support, or technical fit. |
Starlight for documentation
Documentation has different requirements from a blog: readers need predictable navigation, deep page hierarchies, search, versioned or localized content, and a way to move between related concepts. Starlight is specifically positioned for that use rather than being a general-purpose marketing theme. Its listed capabilities include full-text search, internationalization (i18n), sidebar navigation, and dark mode.
Choose it when your primary content is a manual, API reference, knowledge base, or technical guide. Before committing, map your planned sections into its navigation model and confirm that the search provider, localization approach, and any code-display or interactive components you need are supported by the current project. A documentation framework can be a poor fit for a site whose main goal is a conversion-focused home page.
AstroPaper for a feature-rich blog
AstroPaper is described as a blog-oriented theme with search, light and dark modes, archives, tags, and RSS. Those features address common publishing tasks: helping readers find older posts, browse a taxonomy, subscribe to updates, and choose a comfortable reading appearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt is a sensible candidate for an article site, personal knowledge base, or resume-plus-blog project. Check how posts are represented in the current codebase, whether metadata fields match your workflow, and which styling system and content tools it uses. If you only need a handful of pages, removing unused archive, tag, or search components may take more work than starting from a smaller template.

Cactus for a lightweight personal site
Cactus is described with Astro content collections, MDX, search, and RSS. Content collections can give structured front matter and predictable content handling, while MDX lets authors combine Markdown with components when a plain article needs an interactive element.
It fits a personal blog, notes site, or compact portfolio where writing is central and the visual system should remain restrained. Its minimal feature set may be an advantage if you want fewer pages to remove, but verify that it includes the taxonomy, navigation, feeds, and page types your project requires. Confirm the current repository status rather than assuming that a previously published feature list is unchanged.
AstroWind for marketing and launch pages
AstroWind is presented as a landing and marketing starter, which makes it a better starting point for a product announcement, service site, or SaaS funnel than a documentation-first framework. A repository check dated June 2026 reported Astro v6 and Tailwind CSS v4; those versions are historical observations, not a guarantee that the project still uses them today.
Recommended Free Tools
Evaluate the page sections against your conversion path: hero, proof, benefits, pricing or call to action, and contact flow. A starter can accelerate the initial structure while still requiring replacement of demo copy, imagery, forms, analytics, and legal pages. Confirm the repository’s current owner or destination, license, and package requirements before building client work on it.

How to choose a free Astro theme step by step
- Define the site’s job. Decide whether visitors must read long-form posts, browse a portfolio, find technical answers, buy something, or move through a marketing funnel. Write down the page types and content relationships before looking at visual demos.
- Use the official directory filters. Filter by category, technology, and pricing to reduce the field. Treat “free” as a pricing attribute, not as evidence that a project is maintained or suitable for commercial use.
- Open the project repository. Read its README, package manifest, documentation, issues, releases, and commit history. Confirm the install command and the Astro version range declared by the project rather than relying only on a directory card.
- Check version compatibility. Compare the project’s required Astro and integration versions with the version you intend to run. Listings can describe different Astro generations, and a template may need dependency updates before it works with a newer application.
- Read the license file. Look for the actual license in the repository and verify that it permits your planned use, including client, commercial, redistribution, or modification scenarios. Do not infer permission from a “free” label.
- Inventory included features. List the pages, components, content model, integrations, and scripts you will keep. Then mark what must be removed or rewritten. A long feature list can introduce dependencies and customization work; a small starter can require more additions.
- Review accessibility and customization needs. Inspect heading structure, keyboard behavior, color contrast, focus states, responsive layouts, image alternatives, and form semantics in the current code. No standardized benchmark across these themes is established here, so validate the implementation you plan to ship.
- Test a representative content slice. Add one realistic post, documentation section, portfolio item, or landing-page variant. This exposes front-matter limits, navigation problems, styling conflicts, and missing integrations before you migrate the full site.
- Record the decision date. Note the Astro version, repository commit or release you evaluated, license, and unresolved issues. Recheck these items immediately before launch because community projects and directory listings change.
Maintenance signals: what to verify in 2026
Recent activity is a useful signal, not a warranty of quality, security, support, or future compatibility. A review dated July 6, 2026 reported recent pushes for AstroPaper, Starlight, and Cactus. The same review recorded Astro Nano’s last push as June 16, 2025. Those dates describe a historical snapshot and should be refreshed before adoption; they do not by themselves prove that one project is safer or better.
- Commits and releases: Look for changes that address current Astro versions, dependency updates, and documented bugs.
- Issues and discussions: Check whether maintainers respond to installation, accessibility, and upgrade questions.
- Documentation quality: Confirm that setup, content authoring, deployment, and customization instructions are complete enough for your team.
- Repository identity: Verify that the project linked from the directory is the repository you are evaluating and that ownership has not changed unexpectedly.
- Dependency health: Review integrations and build scripts for packages you do not need or cannot maintain.
Theme, starter, framework, or UI kit?
Use the label to set expectations. A visual theme may mainly provide layouts, colors, and components. A starter can include routing, content examples, configuration, and deployment defaults. Starlight is positioned as a documentation framework, while other directory entries may be UI kits or component libraries. Treating all of them as identical “themes” can lead to the wrong architecture choice.
For a blog, inspect the content model and RSS implementation. For documentation, inspect navigation depth, search, and localization. For a portfolio, inspect project-detail pages, image handling, and filtering. For e-commerce or SaaS, verify whether the listing actually includes the commerce or application integrations you need; a polished front end is not a complete back-office system.
Costs beyond the download
The theme itself is a digital resource. You may still pay for hosting, a domain, email, analytics, image processing, search infrastructure, transactional services, or professional customization. Deployment is a separate decision from theme selection; an Astro starter for a particular hosting platform only establishes a possible technical path, not a bundled hosting arrangement or current commercial terms.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Budget for migration time as well. Replacing demo content, adapting the content schema, updating dependencies, fixing accessibility issues, and removing unused components can outweigh any initial fee savings. A smaller, well-matched starter may be more economical than a larger template whose extra features become maintenance liabilities.

Choosing by screenshot alone
Symptom: The demo looks right, but your content requires different page types or navigation. Recovery: Build one representative page and map every required content relationship before migrating.
Assuming “free” means unrestricted
Symptom: A client or commercial project has unclear reuse rights. Recovery: Read the repository’s license file and retain a record of the version you used. If the license does not cover your use, choose another project or obtain permission.
Ignoring version drift
Symptom: Installation fails or an integration breaks after an Astro upgrade. Recovery: Follow the project’s declared package requirements, pin or update dependencies deliberately, and consult its release notes and issues before changing versions.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Equating recent commits with support
Symptom: The project was active but your issue remains unanswered. Recovery: Examine maintainer responsiveness, documentation, open issues, and release practices together; activity alone is not a support guarantee.
Keeping every included feature
Symptom: Build complexity and bundle dependencies grow while most components remain unused. Recovery: Remove demo pages, integrations, and scripts early, then add only the capabilities your content model requires.
A practical decision rule
Choose Starlight when documentation structure and search are the center of the project. Choose AstroPaper when a full blog workflow with archives, tags, search, and RSS is useful. Choose Cactus when you want a compact personal publishing site with collections and MDX. Choose AstroWind when the primary deliverable is a marketing or launch page. For every other goal, use the official directory to find a category match, then make the repository, license, version, maintenance, accessibility, and customization checks your final gate.
