Yes—you can host an Assetto Corsa server without paying a hosting company. The free route uses the dedicated-server tool from Steam and a computer on your own internet connection. You still pay in electricity, upload bandwidth, router configuration, and maintenance time. Your PC must remain powered on, and players outside your home normally cannot connect until you forward the required ports.

This guide explains the setup, the ports commonly used by the game and Content Manager, realistic home-connection limits, and when a paid server is worth the money.

What “free hosting” actually includes

Assetto Corsa’s dedicated-server software is described by hosting documentation as free to install from Steam’s Tools section. That removes a monthly hosting bill, but it does not make the server costless.

  • Electricity: the host computer must stay on while people are racing.
  • Internet service: upload capacity is more important than download capacity for serving connected drivers.
  • Hardware: the computer must run the server alongside the game, Content Manager, or other workloads without becoming unstable.
  • Administration: you handle updates, configuration, backups, firewall rules, restarts, and troubleshooting.

A home server is normally reachable only from devices on your local network until you configure the router for outside connections. Dynamic public IP addresses can make the address change over time, adding another maintenance task.

What you need before installing

A computer that can stay online

Use a machine that can remain powered on for the entire session. A desktop, spare gaming PC, or other reliable Windows host is the usual choice. Avoid putting the server on a computer that routinely sleeps, reboots for updates, or loses its network connection.

A usable upload connection

Upload speed is the usual home-hosting bottleneck. One vendor guide estimates 10–20 Mbps of upload for about four to eight players. That is a vendor estimate, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee from Kunos or Content Manager. Treat it as a starting point and leave headroom for other traffic on the connection.

Access to your router and firewall

You need administrator access to the router that receives your public internet connection and to the operating system’s firewall. If your connection uses carrier-grade NAT, a second router, or a managed network that blocks inbound traffic, ordinary port forwarding may not work. In that case, the server can remain suitable for LAN play but may not be publicly reachable.

Install the dedicated server

  1. Open Steam and switch the Library view to Tools.
  2. Locate and install the Assetto Corsa dedicated-server tool. The tool is separate from simply launching the racing game.
  3. Choose a permanent installation location with enough free disk space for the server files, configuration, logs, and any content you plan to use.
  4. Do not start by editing random files in the installation directory. First create a basic configuration so you know which instance and cfg folder are active.

The dedicated server’s principal settings are normally stored in server_cfg.ini. The driver and car entries are stored in entry_list.ini; both are in the server’s cfg/ directory.

Build a first server with Content Manager

Content Manager’s Server Manager is the commonly used configuration front end. It lets you select the track and cars, set the lobby name and player slots, and launch the server without hand-editing every setting.

  1. Open Content Manager’s Server Manager.
  2. Create a new server profile rather than changing a profile you may later need for another league or event.
  3. Select a track and a car list that every participant owns and has installed. A missing car or track can prevent a driver from joining even when networking is correct.
  4. Set a clear server name, the number of player slots, practice or qualifying options, and race settings.
  5. Save the profile, then inspect the generated files in the server’s cfg/ directory. Confirm that server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini point to the content and slots you intended.
  6. Start the server locally first. Test with the host PC and another device on the same network before opening it to the internet.

Content Manager can register a server with the public lobby when its HTTP settings are enabled. The settings commonly named for that purpose are HTTP_PORT=8081 and REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1.

Ports: the settings to verify, not blindly copy

Third-party setup guides commonly identify these ports:

Function Common protocol and port What to verify
Game traffic UDP 9600 and TCP 9600 Confirm both values in the active configuration and server logs.
HTTP/lobby communication TCP 8081 Confirm the HTTP port used by Content Manager and the value exposed through your firewall and router.

There is an important inconsistency among examples. One sample configuration uses TCP_PORT=8081 alongside UDP_PORT=9600, while other guides describe TCP 9600 as the game’s default and TCP 8081 as the HTTP port. Do not assume that a copied snippet is authoritative. Open the configuration generated for your server and check the startup log for the ports actually bound by the process.

Forward only the ports your instance uses. If you run more than one server on the same connection, each instance needs a non-conflicting port arrangement, and the corresponding values must match in the configuration, router rules, and firewall.

Configure the router for public players

Port forwarding tells the router where inbound traffic should go. The exact menu names vary by manufacturer, but the sequence is generally the same:

  1. Give the host computer a stable private address, either with a DHCP reservation in the router or a correctly configured static address.
  2. Create forwarding rules for the server’s game ports: UDP 9600 and TCP 9600 when those are the values in your configuration.
  3. Create a TCP rule for port 8081 if you are using Content Manager’s HTTP lobby registration.
  4. Set each rule’s destination to the host computer’s private address, not the router itself.
  5. Save the router configuration and restart the server. Some routers apply forwarding changes only after a reboot or service restart.

Testing from inside the same home network can be misleading because many routers do not support reliable loopback (also called hairpin NAT). Test public reachability from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, or ask a remote driver to search for and join the lobby.

If your public address changes, publish the new address to your group whenever it changes. A dynamic-DNS service can provide a stable name, but it does not remove the need for correct forwarding.

Allow the traffic through the host firewall

The operating system firewall must permit the same protocols and ports that the router forwards. On Linux, one hosting guide recommends allowing UDP and TCP for 9600 and TCP 8081 with ufw. The exact rules should match the ports shown in your own configuration; opening every port is unnecessary and increases exposure.

On Windows or another operating system, create inbound rules for the server executable or for the specific TCP and UDP ports. If the server works on the LAN but disappears from the public lobby, check the host firewall before changing unrelated game settings.

How many players can a free home server handle?

The only concrete capacity figure in the available guidance is the vendor estimate of 10–20 Mbps upload for roughly four to eight players. It is not a measured standard, and no published capacity or uptime statistic from Kunos, Content Manager, or an independent body establishes a universal player limit.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Use that estimate as a conservative planning range rather than a promise. Start with a small private session, watch upload utilization and server stability, then add drivers gradually. If other people are streaming, uploading files, or using cloud backups on the same connection, the effective capacity will be lower.

Download speed is less likely to be the limiting resource for a server, but the host still needs a stable connection with low interruption. A fast connection that drops or changes address frequently is less useful than a slower connection that remains reachable.

Keeping a home server reliable

Power and sleep settings

Disable automatic sleep and hibernation on the host. Schedule operating-system updates and reboots outside league sessions, and keep a manual restart plan for crashes or router outages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configuration backups

Back up server_cfg.ini, entry_list.ini, and your Content Manager profile before changing tracks, cars, slots, or ports. Keep a known-good copy so you can restore a working session quickly.

Content consistency

Every driver needs the same required track and car content. When someone cannot join, first compare the exact content name and version before assuming the router is at fault.

Logs and port checks

Use the server startup output and logs to confirm which ports are bound, whether lobby registration succeeded, and whether the process stopped because a port was already in use. This is especially important when a sample configuration conflicts with the defaults you expected.

Free home hosting versus a paid provider

A paid provider charges for an always-on rented machine and typically preconfigures networking. That convenience is the principal difference, not a different version of the game.

Consideration Home hosting at no hosting fee Paid rented server
Monthly hosting charge No hosting fee; electricity and internet costs remain. Recurring rental charge.
Uptime Depends on your PC, power, router, and connection. Designed to remain online, subject to the provider’s service terms.
Ports You configure forwarding and firewall rules manually. Default TCP/UDP 9600 and HTTP 8081 are often preconfigured, although an instance may use different ports; check the provider panel.
Bandwidth and capacity Limited by your home upload connection and other household traffic. Determined by the rented plan and its network limits.
Support You diagnose router, firewall, operating-system, and configuration problems. Provider support may help with the server and network environment.
Control Direct access to your hardware and files. Control depends on the provider’s dashboard and access policy.

Choose home hosting for occasional private races, a small group, and situations where you are comfortable maintaining the machine. A paid service becomes more practical when the server must be available while your PC is off, when your ISP blocks inbound connections, or when missed sessions and troubleshooting time cost more than the monthly fee.

What about free cloud tiers?

A vendor blog mentions trials or free tiers from large cloud providers, including AWS, Google Cloud, and Oracle, as possible alternatives. Their eligibility rules, regional availability, quotas, expiration dates, and network terms change frequently and were not verified here. Do not treat any of them as permanently “always free” without checking the current provider terms.

Cloud hosting also shifts the work rather than eliminating it: you still install the dedicated server, secure the instance, open the correct ports, monitor usage, and shut down resources that could incur charges. For a small group, a home PC is usually easier to understand; for a public service, a properly managed rented instance may offer more predictable uptime.

Troubleshooting checklist

Friends cannot see the server

  • Confirm the server process is running and the lobby-registration setting is enabled if you expect a public listing.
  • Check that the router forwards the active game and HTTP ports to the correct private address.
  • Check the host firewall for matching TCP and UDP rules.
  • Test from outside your home network to avoid router loopback limitations.
  • Read the startup log for a port conflict, bind failure, or registration error.

The server works on LAN but not over the internet

This pattern usually points to forwarding, firewall, carrier-grade NAT, or a changing public address rather than a car or track selection problem. Verify that your internet service provides a reachable public address and that there is not a second router between the host and the internet.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Players are disconnected or the session feels unstable

Check upload saturation first. Stop large uploads, cloud backups, and streams on the same connection, then repeat the test with fewer drivers. If the connection remains unreliable even with spare bandwidth, the home link or router may not be suitable for a public session.

A copied port example does not work

Return to the active server_cfg.ini and the startup log. Because third-party examples disagree about whether TCP 9600 or TCP 8081 is assigned to a particular function, the running configuration—not a generic snippet—must determine your forwarding and firewall rules.
