Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma 3 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
There is no permanent, reliable, fully free Arma 3 host for a community. You can run Bohemia Interactive’s dedicated-server software at no software charge on your own hardware, use a host’s short free trial, or try a free-tier virtual private server (VPS). Each option shifts the cost to electricity, upload bandwidth, administration time, limited trial duration, or weak hardware. For a server that must stay online and perform well with mods, plan on paying for hosting or supplying your own suitable machine.
What “free Arma 3 hosting” actually means
Search results often combine three different offers under the word “free.” They are not equivalent:
- Free server software: Bohemia Interactive distributes the Arma 3 dedicated-server package without a hosting fee. You still provide the computer, internet connection, electricity, storage and administration.
- Free trial hosting: A commercial game-server company gives you a temporary server so you can test its control panel and performance. The server normally expires unless you start paying.
- Free-tier VPS hosting: A general-purpose cloud provider gives you a small virtual machine at no charge under its own limits. You install and maintain the Arma 3 server yourself, and the allocated CPU, memory, storage and network capacity may be inadequate.
The distinction matters because “$0 per month” does not guarantee continuous uptime, a public address that players can reach, enough CPU time for simulation, or support when a mission or mod fails.
Option 1: run the official dedicated server on your own PC
Self-hosting is the only route in this list that can remain free indefinitely, provided you already own the hardware and accept its operating costs. The dedicated-server software itself does not require purchasing the regular Arma 3 game, although a Steam account is needed to install it.

Official hardware guidance
Bohemia Interactive’s wiki lists the following baseline figures. The page supplying these values was not rechecked for a newer revision, so confirm the current requirements before building a permanent server.

Arma 3 simulation is sensitive to CPU performance and mission scripting. Bohemia Interactive has not published a universal players-per-core or players-per-gigabyte figure. The practical load varies with the mission, AI count, scripts, view-distance settings and mods, so the table cannot be converted into a guaranteed player limit.
What you must supply beyond the specifications
- Upload capacity: Every connected player receives state updates from your connection. A residential line can become the bottleneck before the processor does, particularly when other household traffic is active.
- Continuous power: The machine must remain on for the server to remain available. Electricity and heat are the recurring cost of a nominally free setup.
- Administrative time: You are responsible for installing the server package, selecting missions, adding and updating mods, reading logs, applying operating-system updates and recovering from crashes.
- A reachable network path: Players need to be able to connect to the machine from outside your home. Router, firewall and ISP policies determine whether that is possible. If your connection does not provide a usable public address, ask the ISP what inbound hosting support it offers before spending time on configuration.
Self-hosting workflow
- Prepare a dedicated Windows or Linux machine. Use hardware that meets at least the published minimum and preferably the recommended CPU, memory and SSD figures. A separate machine avoids competition with your own game client.
- Install the official dedicated-server package. Use a Steam account to obtain the package, following Bohemia Interactive’s current dedicated-server documentation. Do not assume that installing the retail game is required.
- Create a clean server profile and configuration. Set the server name, password policy, administrator credentials, mission rotation and any required security settings. Keep a backup of configuration files before changing mods.
- Install only the mods and missions your group needs. Every additional dependency increases startup time and the chance of a version mismatch. Record exact mod versions so clients can reproduce the setup.
- Allow the server through the host firewall and home router. Use the ports and protocol specified by the current Bohemia documentation, then test from a connection outside your home network. A test from the same LAN can succeed even when internet players are blocked.
- Monitor the first sessions. Watch CPU use, memory, upload saturation, server frame rate and log errors while several players exercise the busiest mission. Reduce AI or script load before adding more mods.
- Document recovery. Keep copies of the configuration, mod list and mission files. Decide who can restart the process when you are unavailable.
A virtual LAN utility can sometimes connect friends without conventional port forwarding, but its behavior depends on the network and software involved. Treat it as a workaround to test with your group, not as a guarantee of a publicly discoverable community server.

Option 2: use a game-hosting free trial
A trial is easier than maintaining your own machine because the provider supplies the server hardware, network and control panel. The trade-off is that the offer ends. Before inviting a community, record the exact expiry time, deletion policy, backup policy and price after the trial.
Legion Hosting
Legion Hosting advertises a page titled “Start Your Free Arma 3 Server Trial.” The available search information confirms the advertised trial page but does not establish its duration, hardware allocation, renewal price or whether a payment card is required. Read the current signup terms rather than relying on a “no card” statement copied elsewhere.
PingPerfect
Search summaries report a 48-hour trial and a process requiring a support ticket before the trial ends if you want to keep the server. They also report a lowest paid plan of about $10.45 per month. Those details were not confirmed on a current provider page, so treat them as leads to verify at checkout, including taxes, billing interval, storage, mod support and cancellation rules.

Trial checklist
- Write down when the trial starts and exactly when the files and address will be removed.
- Check whether the trial includes the CPU, RAM and storage needed by your mission and mod set.
- Confirm whether you can upload custom missions, use Steam Workshop content and restart after a crash.
- Test actual latency and server performance with your expected number of players; a control panel alone cannot show simulation quality.
- Export configuration and mission files while the trial is active so migration is possible if the offer ends.
- Verify whether a card, support ticket or manual renewal is required to continue.
A trial is best for evaluating a provider or running a short event. It is not a dependable long-term plan unless you have confirmed the paid renewal and budget.
Option 3: install Arma 3 on a free-tier VPS
A VPS gives you a remote machine rather than a game-specific control panel. You receive operating-system access, install the dedicated server yourself and handle updates, firewall rules, backups and troubleshooting. This can be useful for technical users who need a persistent test instance, but free tiers are commonly constrained.
A HostAdvice roundup listed $0.00 starting prices for several general hosting companies, including Kamatera, IONOS and InterServer. The terms behind those entries were not verified: a listed starting price may be promotional, conditional on eligibility, limited by time or tied to a very small machine. Cybernews has cautioned that free VPS offers can deliver poor performance or steer users toward a paid upgrade. Verify the current service agreement and resource allocation before treating any listing as a free Arma 3 solution.

A free VPS that falls below the official minimum is unlikely to be useful. Even one that meets the minimum may struggle with a modded community mission because the minimum is not a published player-capacity guarantee.

Common failure points and practical fixes
The server is visible locally but not to internet players
Check the host firewall, router forwarding and whether the ISP permits inbound connections. Test from a separate network, such as a phone hotspot. If the ISP uses a carrier-grade or otherwise non-reachable address, ask whether a public IPv4 service is available; changing Arma settings cannot overcome an unreachable network path.
Players connect but the mission slows down
Measure CPU, memory and upload usage during the busiest part of the mission. Reduce AI and script load, remove unnecessary mods and stop unrelated applications on the host. If the machine is shared with the game client, move the server to separate hardware or accept lower settings.

Clients receive mod or version errors
Compare the server’s mod list and versions with every client. Update in a controlled window, keep a known-good copy, and avoid changing several dependencies at once. A clean profile helps identify whether the fault is the base server or a mission dependency.
A “free” server suddenly stops
Review the trial expiry, inactivity rule, monthly quota and payment terms. Export the configuration and mission files before the deadline. If the server hosts a community that expects continuous access, move to paid hosting or owned hardware rather than repeatedly rebuilding short trials.

- Choose your own machine when you have a spare computer, a workable internet connection and someone willing to administer it. It is the only option here without an automatic hosting-expiry date.
- Choose a game-host trial when you need to test a mission, run a weekend event or evaluate a control panel before paying.
- Choose a free VPS only when you are comfortable with Linux or Windows server administration and the provider clearly documents CPU, RAM, storage, public addressing and expiry conditions.
- Budget for paid hosting or dedicated hardware when uptime, predictable latency, mod-heavy missions or a growing community matter. Free tiers and trials are useful for experiments, not a dependable service level.
The decisive question is not whether the signup page says “free.” It is who pays for the resources that keep the simulation running: you through hardware, power and time, or a provider through a trial that eventually converts to a paid service.
