You can set up free AI pull request reviews in about 20 minutes if you have an existing public GitHub or GitLab repository and the access needed to install an app. CodeRabbit says its free offer covers public repositories, subject to rate limits and feature exclusions. GitHub Copilot Free is not a pull-request review option; Copilot code review requires an eligible paid plan or organization configuration that may incur charges.
Which free AI pull request review option fits?
| Option | Repository coverage | Plan and allowance | How review starts | Cost boundary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CodeRabbit OSS offer | Public GitHub and GitLab repositories | Free offer with rate limits; some paid features excluded | Install the integration; review availability depends on the repository setup | Free offer does not establish private-repository coverage or unlimited reviews. CodeRabbit pricing and CodeRabbit open-source support |
| GitHub Copilot Free | GitHub Copilot coding features, but not pull request code review | $0; GitHub documents 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests monthly. These are not review credits. | Does not include PR review | There is no free PR-review allowance in this plan. GitHub Copilot plans and GitHub Copilot plan documentation |
| Copilot code review on an eligible plan | GitHub pull requests | Personal automatic review requires Pro, Pro+, or Max; Business and Enterprise also support code review | Request Copilot as reviewer or configure automatic review | AI Credits and Actions minutes may be consumed; billing depends on plan and organization settings. GitHub says most eligible individual developers can begin using Copilot Free without setup, but exceptions apply. That convenience does not change the fact that pull request review is excluded. See GitHub’s eligibility and plan details.
Set up a free review for a public repository
The following is a practical estimate, not a measured setup time. It assumes the repository already exists, you can sign in, and you have permission to install an integration. Allow more time if an organization owner must approve apps or repository access.
- Check repository visibility and permissions. Confirm the repository is public and that your account can install or approve an app for it. CodeRabbit’s documented free offer is for public repositories.
- Sign in to CodeRabbit. Choose GitHub or GitLab, depending on where the repository is hosted. CodeRabbit’s support article describes signing in and installing the service on a public repository as the route to its free reviews.
- Install and select the repository. Grant access only to the repository or repositories you intend to use, then complete any owner approval required by the host.
- Open a small test pull request. Make a modest change with an understandable diff so you can see whether the integration is connected and how it presents comments.
- Check the result in the pull request. If no review appears, confirm the app has access to the repository and that the pull request is eligible under the integration’s current limits. Consult CodeRabbit’s open-source support details for offer boundaries.
CodeRabbit describes its public-repository offer as free, but also notes rate limits and that OSS users do not receive every paid feature. Do not treat it as unlimited review capacity or as evidence that private repositories are covered.

Can GitHub Copilot Free review pull requests?
No. GitHub’s plan page lists pull request code review as a paid-plan feature, not part of Copilot Free. The Free plan’s monthly allowance—2,000 completions and 50 chat requests, as documented by GitHub in 2026—applies to Copilot coding use, not PR reviews. Check GitHub’s current plans and plan documentation for eligibility and details.
If you already have an eligible plan, you can request a manual review:
Rank #2
- In the pull request on GitHub, find Reviewers and select Copilot.
- Or, for a new pull request with GitHub CLI, run
gh pr create --reviewer @copilot. - For an existing pull request, run
gh pr edit PR-NUMBER --add-reviewer @copilot, replacingPR-NUMBERwith the pull request number.
GitHub documents the interface and CLI methods in Using GitHub Copilot code review. These instructions are for requesting a review on a plan with the feature; they do not unlock it on Copilot Free.

When Copilot review is automatic—and what it may cost
Personal automatic Copilot review is available on Pro, Pro+, and Max. GitHub also supports code review for Business and Enterprise licenses. For personal settings, open GitHub Copilot settings and enable Automatic Copilot code review for your own pull requests. Options include reviewing new pushes and draft pull requests. Organizations can administer review through their settings and rulesets. The exact configuration and plan requirements are in GitHub’s configuration guide.
- Code review model interactions can consume AI Credits.
- Agentic capabilities use GitHub Actions minutes; GitHub says code review workflows also consume Actions minutes beginning June 1, 2026.
- If an organization enables reviews for a user whose plan does not include code review, additional usage may be billed to the organization. Administrators should check billing controls before enabling that setup.
These billing details are described on GitHub’s plan page and in its code review configuration documentation. A plan’s free AI Credit allowance should not be mistaken for a free review feature.
How to use AI review comments safely
Treat an AI review as another source of suggestions, not as approval that code is correct. The cited product documentation describes availability, settings, and billing; it does not establish that AI review replaces human review or tests.
Rank #4
- Verify each finding against the relevant code and expected behavior before changing anything.
- Run the project’s tests and checks; an AI review is not evidence that they passed.
- Keep normal human review requirements in place, especially for security-sensitive or high-impact changes.
- Check the service’s access scope and usage limits if the review does not appear or stops arriving.
Choosing the right route
For a public GitHub or GitLab repository where a vendor-defined free offer is suitable, CodeRabbit is the documented route to try. For GitHub users who need Copilot review, Copilot Free is not enough: use manual review on an eligible plan, or configure automatic review where the plan and organization billing settings permit it. The cited sources do not provide an independent benchmark for comparing review accuracy or time saved, so choose based on repository eligibility, permissions, review workflow, and cost controls rather than an assumed quality ranking.
