Start with Fran Bow if you want a conventional point-and-click adventure built around puzzles, object use and deeper exploration. Start with Little Misfortune if you prefer a shorter, more streamlined interactive story led by character, dark humor, choices and spoken dialogue.
The games are made by the same studio and Little Misfortune shares Fran Bow’s universe, but there is no established required play order. You can begin with either one; your preferred style of play is the better deciding factor than chronology.

The deliberate rhythm is not just a cosmetic difference. A slower adventure gives you more time to inspect a setting and form your own interpretation of what matters. You play as Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez, an imaginative eight-year-old who is seeking Eternal Happiness for her mother. That premise puts the character and her journey at the center of the experience.
The game includes spoken dialogue, which changes how its scenes land compared with a purely text-driven adventure. The result is a more guided, performance-oriented presentation: you follow Misfortune through situations, make decisions and watch the story respond. The format still allows exploration, but the evidence describes it as streamlined rather than as a puzzle-heavy point-and-click structure.
Dark humor, themes and tenderness
Martinsson described Little Misfortune as “a video game full of black humor, dark themes and tenderness.” That translated quotation from the October 28, 2019 Meristation interview captures the tonal combination better than a simple “dark game” label. The story can be unsettling, funny and emotionally gentle in close succession.
If you are choosing based on tone, do not assume that a dark setting means nonstop horror or that humor removes the serious material. Starting with Fran Bow
Beginning with Fran Bow lets you encounter Killmonday’s world through its more traditional adventure structure first. You will approach the shared setting through puzzles, object use and extended exploration. When you later play Little Misfortune, you can treat its character-led story as another perspective from the same universe without needing it to function as a direct continuation.

Beginning with Little Misfortune gives you the quicker introduction to the studio’s dark humor, unusual characters and tonal contrast. It lists Killmonday Games AB as both developer and publisher, English full audio, and multiple interface and subtitle language options. Both titles are associated with Killmonday’s distinctive dark, hand-drawn world.
