First, identify what the laptop actually does: a black screen after a BIOS update may call for firmware recovery, while “No Bootable Device Found – Press any key to go to boot manager” usually calls for checking the drive and operating system. Those are different problems, and a recovery filename or procedure for one Framework model should not be used on another.
Identify the failure before trying recovery
Note whether the laptop powers on, shows a Framework logo or BIOS screen, reaches a boot menu, or stays blank after a BIOS update. A missing boot device is not, by itself, proof that BIOS firmware is corrupted.
- No display or failure to reach the operating system after a BIOS update: this may fit Framework’s BIOS Crisis Recovery guidance for the specific model documented below.
- “No Bootable Device Found – Press any key to go to boot manager”: investigate storage installation and the operating system rather than assuming a failed BIOS flash.
- BIOS or boot menu appears: use the appropriate startup key to inspect settings or select a boot device; reaching a menu is not the same as performing firmware recovery.
Framework describes Crisis Recovery for a system that fails to power on to the OS after a BIOS update, has no display, or has been directed to undergo recovery. A laptop that boots normally does not need this procedure. See Framework’s Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel Core BIOS 3.09 recovery instructions.

BIOS recovery: the documented Laptop 12 procedure
The exact steps and filename below apply to the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel Core procedure for BIOS 3.09. Do not use this recovery file, or infer its name, for a different Framework Laptop generation or model. Framework’s BIOS resource lists version 3.09 as released on 2026-09-08 and provides an EFI Shell Update package; its recovery instructions say to take the CAP file from that matching package and rename it for recovery. Details are in the model-specific recovery page and BIOS versions page.

- On a working computer, format a USB flash drive as FAT32. Formatting erases the drive. The instructions do not establish a required capacity.
- Create the folder path
EFIFWKon the USB drive. - Download the EFI Shell Update package for the exact Laptop 12 model and BIOS resource. Extract its CAP file, then rename that file exactly to
Framework_Laptop_12_13th_Gen_Intel_Core_RECOVERY.fd. - Place the renamed file in
EFIFWK, so the complete path isEFIFWKFramework_Laptop_12_13th_Gen_Intel_Core_RECOVERY.fd. Preserve the exact capitalization and.fdextension. - Safely eject the USB drive. Fully power off the affected laptop, insert the drive, and power the laptop on.
- If the BIOS detects corrupted code, recovery is designed to start automatically; the documented instructions do not require a special key combination. The BIOS searches attached USB and NVMe storage, so scanning and entry can take a few minutes.
- Keep the laptop powered and leave the recovery media connected while reflashing runs. Do not power off the machine or remove the USB drive. Wait for the process to finish and the laptop to restart.
If your Framework model does not match this procedure, stop rather than trying the example filename. Consult the official BIOS resource for the exact model or contact Framework support.
When the laptop reports no boot device
For the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel Core, Framework’s no-boot-device guidance treats this as a storage or OS troubleshooting branch.

These instructions are for the cited Laptop 12 page. Follow the equivalent guidance for your exact Framework model rather than assuming its storage layout or troubleshooting steps are identical.
Open BIOS setup or choose a boot device
Framework’s published BIOS key guidance says to tap F2 during startup for BIOS setup or F12 for boot-device selection. If a key does not register, try these steps:

- Shut down fully, then disconnect power for 35 seconds before trying again.
- Press Fn+Esc to toggle function lock, then retry the startup key.
- Try an external USB keyboard.
These suggestions help with entering menus; they do not replace model-specific firmware recovery if the BIOS is corrupted. The key guidance is an older Framework support article, so it should not be taken as a guarantee for every board revision.

Use Framework’s support site and exact-model repair resources if the recovery instructions do not match your laptop, the correct recovery file is unavailable, or the machine remains unbootable. Do not open the laptop or replace a board solely because someone has described it as “bricked”; first establish the model and symptom, then follow the corresponding official guidance.
