The Framework Laptop 12 is a compelling compact 2-in-1 if repairability, configurable ports, and tablet flexibility matter more to you than maximum speed, battery endurance, or a polished-feeling chassis. But the available detailed independent tests cover the 2025 Intel Core i5-1334U model, not the 2026 refresh, so they cannot establish how that newer generation performs or how long it lasts on a charge. This review separates those tested results from the current model’s specifications rather than presenting them as a two-week hands-on test.

What makes the Framework Laptop 12 different?

Framework’s Laptop 12 combines a 12.2-inch touchscreen with a hinge that rotates 360 degrees, so it can work as a laptop or fold into a tablet-style configuration. Its distinguishing feature is not simply the convertible design: it is built around replaceable components and configurable ports, giving owners more scope to adapt or repair the computer than is typical of a compact laptop.

That makes it a particularly interesting choice for someone who wants a small everyday machine but does not want every repair or configuration change to mean replacing the whole computer. It is not, however, proof of guaranteed longevity or future upgrade support; those outcomes depend on the availability of parts and the specific repair.

What the current 2026 model offers

Framework’s product information, accessed October 13, 2026, describes a refreshed Laptop 12 with Intel Core Series 3 processors: Core 3 304, Core 5 320, and Core 7 350. Framework says the refresh updates the processor lineup, graphics, connectivity, and biometrics while retaining the repairable design. The specifications page lists a 12.2-inch convertible and a 50Wh battery. Framework’s update information also lists support for up to 64GB of DDR5-6400 memory, Intel Graphics with Xe3 cores, Wi-Fi 7 module support, and Thunderbolt 4 on the upper-left and upper-right ports.

These are current-generation specifications, not results from independent testing of the 2026 model. In particular, the battery and performance figures below belong to a different generation and should not be used to predict the refresh’s real-world results.

Repairability is the strongest reason to choose it

The Laptop 12’s modular design has practical benefits. PCWorld’s review of the DIY configuration reported that installing memory and storage involved removing a plastic piece and snapping the modules into place. The keyboard tray attaches magnetically, and the four expansion ports can be swapped. Framework’s port options described in that review include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, microSD, and SD.

RTINGS and PCWorld also describe major components as replaceable or upgradeable. For buyers, that means repairability is a feature to weigh in everyday ownership—not just a specification on a product page. You can choose ports to suit your setup and, for supported components, replace or upgrade parts rather than treating the entire laptop as disposable. The sources do not establish a formal repair-success rate or guarantee how long future components will remain available.

How the 2025 review unit performed

PCWorld tested a 2025 Laptop 12 configuration with an Intel Core i5-1334U processor, 16GB of memory, and Intel UHD graphics. Its reviewer found the machine adequate for everyday productivity, but not a strong choice for CPU-heavy multithreaded work or 3D graphics compared with newer laptops. The results below are PCWorld’s tests of that specific configuration; they are not manufacturer claims or measurements of the 2026 refresh.

PCWorld test 2025 i5-1334U review-unit result
PCMark 10 5,288
Cinebench R20 multi-core 2,106
HandBrake encode 2,648 seconds
3DMark Time Spy 1,255

Those results support a straightforward distinction: routine productivity was within the tested machine’s reach, while demanding multicore and graphics work exposed its limits. If your regular work involves heavy video encoding, 3D tasks, or other sustained high-load workloads, do not assume the Laptop 12 is the right tool based on its compact form and modularity alone.

Battery life depends on the workload—and the generation

PCWorld measured 688 minutes, or 11 hours and 28 minutes, in a controlled local 4K video playback test on its 2025 review unit. The test used Windows 11, airplane mode, and a screen brightness of 250 nits. That is a specific playback result, not a prediction for a typical workday.

Separately, PCWorld reviewer Chris Hoffman reported about five hours using Chrome, Slack, Word, OneNote, and similar productivity apps on the review unit. That mixed-workload experience is a more relevant warning for people who need to work away from an outlet, but it still applies to the 2025 configuration—not the 2026 refresh. The current model’s listed 50Wh battery capacity does not, by itself, establish runtime.

Convertible use, display, and accessories

The 360-degree hinge makes it possible to use the Laptop 12 in laptop or tablet-style positions. Framework lists a separately purchased USI 2.0 stylus for the current model, making it a relevant add-on for handwriting or drawing. Check the exact product and compatibility before purchasing a stylus; the available specifications establish support for Framework’s listed USI 2.0 option, not for every pen on the market.

Framework’s 2025 launch announcement described a 1920×1200 touchscreen with stylus support and brightness above 400 nits. Those are launch-era details and should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every current SKU. Consult the specifications for the exact configuration you are considering.

What the DIY price does—and does not—tell you

Framework’s DIY page lists a starting price of $549, but that is not necessarily the price of a complete, ready-to-use laptop. The final cost and included parts depend on the chosen configuration. Depending on what you select or already own, a DIY build may require memory, storage, an operating system, power adapter, and port modules. Framework lists its 60W USB-C power adapter as optional for DIY; the pre-built configuration shown includes an adapter. Check the exact SKU and its included components before comparing prices.

Expansion Cards are useful for tailoring the port selection, but the listed options do not establish the total cost of a particular setup. Account for the components and accessories you actually need when deciding whether the modular approach fits your budget.

Who should buy the Framework Laptop 12?

  • Consider it if you value replaceable components, configurable ports, a compact touchscreen, and the flexibility to fold the screen back for tablet-style use.
  • Look elsewhere if your priorities are established long-workday battery life, strong performance for demanding CPU or 3D workloads, or the most polished hardware experience. RTINGS notes that alternatives may offer a more polished overall experience, but a specific alternative and current price should be checked before making a direct comparison.
  • Price it as a complete setup. DIY buyers should include the cost of any missing core components, power adapter, operating system, and port modules rather than treating the starting price as a ready-to-use total.
  • Choose by generation. Do not use independent test results for the 2025 i5-1334U review unit as though they measured the 2026 Core Series 3 refresh.

PCWorld reviewer Chris Hoffman summed up the Laptop 12’s appeal as an evaluative judgment: “If you want a modular, repairable, customizable 2-in-1 laptop, there’s no other machine like this on the market. This is your dream machine.” That is praise for its distinctive combination of features, not evidence that it is the best fit for every compact-laptop buyer.
