The 2026 Framework Laptop 12 is a 12.2-inch convertible built around Intel Core Series 3 processors, with replaceable memory and storage, repair guides, and a parts ecosystem that can extend its useful life. Its DIY version starts at $549, but that is not a complete working configuration: memory and an SSD are separate. The laptop’s repairable design and 360-degree hinge make it distinctive; its 60Hz display with 50% NTSC color coverage and the lack of independent testing of this refresh are important compromises.
“Wildcat Lake” appears in contemporaneous reporting, while Framework’s announcement identifies the processors as Core Series 3. This review covers the 2026 refresh, not the original Laptop 12 with 13th Gen Intel processors. The component-price pressures reported during 2026 provide context, but available evidence does not establish a shortage specific to this laptop, let alone an unprecedented one.
What changed in the 2026 Framework Laptop 12?
The refresh replaces the original model’s 13th Gen Intel processors with Core Series 3 options: Core 3 304, Core 5 320, and Core 7 350. Framework also says the new mainboard is backward compatible with the original generation, along with the fingerprint reader and backlit input cover. That gives existing owners an upgrade path without requiring replacement of the entire laptop.
The basic idea remains a compact laptop that converts into a tablet-like device through a 360-degree hinge. Its 12.2-inch touchscreen supports both MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 styluses. The machine weighs 1.3kg and has a 50Wh battery, Wi-Fi 7, a 3.5mm combo jack, and four user-selectable expansion-card slots.

How much does it cost?
Framework’s current product page lists the DIY Laptop 12 from $549. That is a starting price, not the cost of a finished build: DIY buyers supply memory and storage, and the final total depends on configuration and options. Framework’s August 2026 announcement put prebuilt Fedora 44 KDE Plasma configurations from $699. Prices, currency, stock, and configurations can change, so check the live configurator for the amount available in your region.
| Configuration or context | Price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| DIY Laptop 12 | $549 starting price | Framework’s current official product-page price; memory and storage are not included. |
| DIY Core 5 320 | $779 base price | PC Gamer’s reported processor-option price, before DIY memory and storage. |
| DIY Core 7 350 | $999 base price | PC Gamer’s reported processor-option price, before DIY memory and storage. |
| Prebuilt Fedora configuration | From $699 | Starting price announced by Framework in August 2026. |
Component costs are a concern when estimating a DIY build. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 7, 2026, that Framework’s DDR5 DIY memory was priced at $13–$18 per GB, depending on capacity, amid component-price pressure. Those are historical, configuration-dependent figures—not current quotes or a total for a Laptop 12 build. SSD prices were also discussed, but no specific SSD cost is established here.
Can you upgrade the RAM and SSD?
Yes. Framework’s DIY specifications list one replaceable DDR5-6400 SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 64GB and one M.2 2230 NVMe slot supporting drives up to 2TB. The single-slot memory design means there is one module to replace rather than a pair of slots to populate. Check the current configurator and official repair documentation before buying components, especially if you are reusing parts from another machine.

What are the screen and convertible features like?
The LCD measures 12.2 inches diagonally and has a 1920×1200 resolution, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a 60Hz refresh rate. Framework rates it above 400 nits and specifies 50% NTSC color coverage. That combination should suit general productivity, reading, and touch-oriented use, but the stated color coverage is a limitation for color-critical creative work. The 60Hz specification also makes this a conventional rather than high-refresh display.
The 360-degree hinge allows laptop and tablet-style positioning. MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 compatibility means the screen supports styluses using either protocol, but the supplied product information does not establish that a stylus is included. Treat one as a separate accessory unless the exact configuration says otherwise.
Which ports and wireless features does it offer?
There are four user-selectable expansion-card slots, so buyers can choose a port mix instead of being locked into a fixed layout. Framework describes the upper pair as Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2, with DisplayPort Alt Mode listed for the upper slots; the lower pair are USB 3.2 Gen 2. All four support USB Power Delivery. The machine also includes Wi-Fi 7 and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.

Does the Framework Laptop 12 come with Linux?
Framework announced prebuilt configurations with Fedora 44 KDE Plasma starting at $699. Its product page also lists preinstalled Fedora 44 KDE Plasma and Windows 11 Home or Pro among prebuilt specifications. DIY buyers should plan their own operating-system installation; Framework describes Windows as bring-your-own for DIY.
Linux is more than an incidental option for this model: Framework CEO Nirav Patel said almost 80% of Laptop 12 owners were running Linux across a range of distributions. That is a company-reported customer figure, not an independently measured market-wide statistic. Fedora KDE Plasma’s inclusion gives buyers a preinstalled Linux choice, while DIY shoppers should check the current order options and software support information for their chosen configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does the battery last, and how fast is it?
Framework claims that early testing with the Core 5 320 showed 70% longer Netflix 4K streaming battery life than the original Laptop 12 with a Core i5-1334U. The company’s July 2026 test used integrated graphics, 16GB of RAM, a WD SN5000S 512GB SSD, 150-nit display brightness, Wi-Fi enabled, and Best Power Efficiency mode. Framework cautions that real-world battery life can be lower and varies by configuration and use. This is a manufacturer-reported result, not an independent battery test or a promise of everyday runtime.
No independent review of the Core Series 3 refresh is established in the available evidence, so there are no verified new-generation benchmark results to compare. The independent numbers often associated with the Laptop 12 are from PCWorld’s 2025 review of the original 13th Gen model, not this refresh.

| PCWorld result for its 2025 13th Gen review unit | Reported result |
|---|---|
| PCMark 10 | 5,288 |
| Cinebench R20 | 2,106 |
| HandBrake encode | 2,648 seconds |
| 3DMark Time Spy | 1,255 |
| Local 4K video playback test | 688 minutes |
| Reviewer’s own workload battery life | About five hours |
Those figures describe the earlier Intel generation and PCWorld’s test methods; they cannot establish the Core Series 3 model’s performance or battery life. Buyers choosing among the new processor options should wait for independent tests if workload performance or measured runtime is decisive.
Is it worth buying?
The Framework Laptop 12 makes the strongest case for buyers who value a convertible form factor, configurable ports, Linux options, and a laptop they can repair or upgrade. The replaceable SO-DIMM and M.2 drive, available repair documentation, and backward-compatible upgrade components give it a longer-term ownership angle that is unusual among compact convertibles.
The trade-offs are equally concrete: the DIY starting price excludes memory and storage, the display is 60Hz with 50% NTSC coverage, and independent performance and battery measurements for the Core Series 3 refresh are not established. If you need strong color reproduction or want proven benchmark and runtime figures before purchase, those are reasons to wait for independent testing. If repairability and configurability matter more, the 2026 model is promising—but calculate the full build price and verify stock before ordering.
