For the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel platform, install BIOS 3.09 if your system is already on BIOS 3.08, keep the charger connected, and do not plan on rolling back. Framework’s current release notes do not support a universal 80%, 90% or other battery-charge setting for every Laptop 12. Instead, use the operating-system charging controls that your machine exposes, and change BIOS power options only for a specific need such as AC-triggered startup or a preferred boot-performance policy.

This guide covers the BIOS release sequence, the three supported update methods, charge-limiting limits, Boot Performance Mode, Power On AC behavior, Secure Boot navigation and recovery precautions. It applies specifically to the Framework Laptop 12 with the 13th Gen Intel platform; do not substitute instructions for a Framework Laptop 13, a different Laptop 12 processor generation or another computer.

First, identify the exact Laptop 12 platform and BIOS version

Framework publishes separate firmware for different products and processor generations. Before downloading anything, verify that your machine is the Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel model covered by Framework’s “Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel Core — BIOS & Drivers | Resources” page. Then check the BIOS version currently installed using Framework’s version-check procedure linked from that page. Record the version before changing firmware; the correct update path depends on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not apply a Laptop 13 BIOS package to a Laptop 12.
  • Do not assume that a setting, menu path or charge percentage documented for another generation exists on this model.
  • Use the release page that matches both the product family and the operating system update method.

Firmware availability can change after the date of this article. Framework listed BIOS 3.09 as stable and current on 2026-09-08, so re-check the official release index immediately before updating.

Which BIOS should you install?

As of Framework’s 2026-09-08 release entry, BIOS 3.09 is the latest stable version for the Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel platform. It is not a drop-in update from every earlier version: Framework specifies BIOS 3.08 as the minimum starting point. On systems older than 3.08, install 3.08 first, complete its restart, and then install 3.09.

Release What Framework documents Practical implication
BIOS 3.06 Introduced Battery Charge Limiting status functionality for Windows Smart Charging; also updated the default Windows Secure Boot CA and addressed listed storage and fan issues. Charge-limiting status may be visible to Windows, but this note does not define one universal percentage or a complete BIOS menu path.
BIOS 3.07 Changed the F2 action in the F12 Boot Menu to make Setup access easier for Secure Boot work; enhanced Power On AC behavior; fixed a CPU Fan Not Present error when Boot Performance Mode was Max Battery. Useful navigation and reliability changes, but the release notes do not say that Max Battery is best for every owner.
BIOS 3.08 Required baseline for BIOS 3.09. Install and finish this version before attempting 3.09.
BIOS 3.09 Released 2026-09-08. Updated microcode to 0x6134, updated CSME firmware to 16.1.40.2765v3, added Gen 2 HID keyboard support and BIOS Crisis Recovery support, and fixed incorrect Battery Extender status after reboot, hibernation or shutdown following timer expiration. Latest stable release at the date checked. Framework permanently blocks rollback after installation.

The 3.09 release is a two-stage update. Windows runs the 3.08 updater and then the 3.09 updater. Linux through LVFS may offer 3.08 before 3.09. The EFI updater chooses an appropriate updater according to the current baseline, but you still must follow the release-specific instructions.

Prepare safely before a BIOS update

  1. Confirm the model and installed version. Use Framework’s Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel resource page and its version-check instructions.
  2. Read the current 3.09 release instructions. Procedures and availability can change.
  3. Connect the charger. Framework explicitly requires a charger attached for the update. Do not rely on battery power alone.
  4. Save work and close applications. The firmware process can restart the computer more than once.
  5. Do not interrupt the progress screen, automatic reboot or firmware-writing stage. Removing power or forcing a shutdown can leave firmware incomplete.
  6. Plan around the no-rollback rule. Once BIOS 3.09 is installed, Framework says rollback is permanently blocked.

If Windows device encryption uses BitLocker and you select the EFI updater from Windows, suspend BitLocker first as Framework directs. Resume protection after the firmware update and confirm that Windows starts normally.

How to update BIOS 3.09 in Windows

Windows owners should treat 3.09 as a sequential installation rather than a single executable.

  1. Download the Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel BIOS 3.08 package from Framework’s current release page.
  2. With the charger connected, run the 3.08 updater and follow its prompts.
  3. Allow the firmware process and restart to finish completely. Do not power off when the screen changes or appears idle.
  4. After Windows returns, verify that the BIOS now reports at least 3.08.
  5. Run the BIOS 3.09 updater, again with AC power connected.
  6. Let the second firmware stage and all restarts finish, then check the installed version again.

If the 3.09 program refuses to run on an older baseline, that is expected: install 3.08 first rather than forcing the package. If Windows reports a recovery or security prompt after the reboot, use Framework’s release-specific instructions instead of repeatedly restarting the machine.

How to update through Linux and LVFS

Framework distributes the Laptop 12 firmware through the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS), accessed with fwupd. Open a terminal and run the documented sequence:

fwupdmgr refresh --force
fwupdmgr get-updates
fwupdmgr update

The first command refreshes firmware metadata, the second shows available updates and the third schedules installation. Keep the charger connected while the update is staged and during the reboot into the firmware updater. LVFS can present BIOS 3.08 first; complete that update and run the checks again for 3.09.

When LVFS does not offer the update at 100% battery

Framework documents a specific condition in which the update may not be offered while the battery reads 100%. Discharge the battery to 95%, reconnect AC power, and retry the LVFS update. The important sequence is discharge first, then reconnect the charger before asking fwupdmgr to check again. Do not interpret this behavior as a recommendation to update on battery power.

How to use the EFI-shell updater

The EFI method is useful when the operating-system updater is unavailable or when Framework’s release instructions direct you to it. It requires a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive; Windows and Linux/LVFS methods do not require buying one.

  1. Download the EFI updater archive for the exact Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel release.
  2. Extract the archive to a FAT32-formatted USB drive as described in the release instructions.
  3. Shut down the laptop with the charger attached and insert the drive.
  4. Power on and press F12 to open the boot menu.
  5. Select the EFI entry and follow the release-specific on-screen procedure.
  6. Leave the charger connected and do not remove the USB drive or interrupt reboots until the process reports completion.

The 3.09 EFI procedure selects an updater appropriate to the current baseline, but the 3.08 requirement still applies. If you start from an unsupported version, stop and follow Framework’s sequence rather than improvising.

Battery Charge Limiting: what you can and cannot set

BIOS 3.06 introduced Battery Charge Limiting status functionality to support Windows Smart Charging. That wording matters: the checked Laptop 12 documentation confirms support for status reporting, but it does not establish a universal numeric maximum or a complete current BIOS menu path for setting one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Therefore, do not treat 80%, 90%, 95% or another number as an official Laptop 12 recommendation unless Framework’s current documentation for your exact configuration tells you to use it. A guide written for another Framework generation may show a different control, threshold or menu location.

Windows approach

Use the current Windows Smart Charging controls when they are available on your installation. The BIOS status functionality allows Windows to understand the charging state; it does not mean every Laptop 12 has identical user-visible controls. If Smart Charging is absent, reports an unexpected state or disagrees with the battery indicator, update Windows and firmware according to Framework’s model-specific support instructions before changing BIOS options.

Linux approach

Use the battery-management controls supported by your Linux distribution and desktop environment, while checking Framework’s Laptop 12 documentation for compatibility. Do not copy a charge threshold from a Laptop 13 guide merely because the names look similar. If your goal is to reduce time spent at full charge, state that goal and verify that the control actually applies to this platform rather than assuming a BIOS toggle exists.

Boot Performance Mode: choose by workload, not by a universal preset

Framework’s BIOS 3.07 notes mention a fix for a CPU Fan Not Present error when Boot Performance Mode was set to Max Battery. The note confirms that Max Battery is a supported mode and that this particular error was fixed; it does not quantify battery-life gains, establish a performance penalty, or identify one mode as the correct default for all users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Max Battery may make sense

  • You prioritize lower startup power use over the fastest possible initial responsiveness.
  • Your workload is light and you do not need maximum performance immediately after boot.
  • You are troubleshooting the documented fan-error symptom on an older BIOS and can update first.

When to select another policy

  • You compile code, render media or run virtual machines immediately after startup.
  • You need the shortest time to reach a responsive desktop and accept higher initial power use.
  • Your organization has a standard performance policy that takes precedence over personal battery preferences.

Because Framework does not publish a Laptop 12 measurement showing how much runtime or performance each mode changes, select the mode that matches your workload and verify behavior after updating. Avoid promising a specific percentage improvement.

Power On AC and automatic startup

BIOS 3.07 enhanced Power On AC behavior. This setting controls what the laptop does when external power is connected, such as whether it starts automatically after AC is restored. The release note confirms an enhancement but does not define a single preferred state for every user.

Use an AC-start behavior when

  • The laptop is deployed as a headless workstation, kiosk or appliance that must recover after a power interruption.
  • You operate it in a dock or location where opening the lid or pressing the power button is inconvenient.

Leave automatic start disabled when

  • You carry the laptop between outlets and do not want it powering on as soon as a charger is inserted.
  • You store it in a bag or confined space where an unexpected startup could create heat or drain power.

After changing the option, test both a normal shutdown and an AC reconnect. If the behavior does not match the label shown in your BIOS, restore the prior value and consult the current Framework instructions; do not infer behavior from a different model.

Secure Boot and the F12 menu change

BIOS 3.07 changed the F2 action in the F12 Boot Menu so that reaching Setup for Secure Boot work is easier. In practice, press F12 during startup to open the boot menu, then use the documented F2 action to enter Setup. The exact screen labels can vary with firmware revisions, so follow the release page rather than relying on a generic BIOS tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BIOS 3.06 also updated the default Windows Secure Boot certificate authority. If you manage custom operating-system images or signed boot components, check their trust requirements before changing Secure Boot keys or disabling the feature. Do not disable Secure Boot merely to install a normal Windows or Linux update; change it only when a documented installation requirement calls for it, and record the original state so you can restore it.

These items explain why updating can be worthwhile even when you do not intend to change a power option. They are firmware-level changes, not promises of a measured battery-life or performance increase.

Choosing an update method

Method Operating system or environment Physical media Version handling Power requirement
Windows updater Windows None specified Run 3.08, restart, then run 3.09 Charger attached
LVFS with fwupdmgr Linux None LVFS may offer 3.08 before 3.09 Charger attached; if unavailable at 100%, discharge to 95%, reconnect AC and retry
EFI shell Boot environment FAT32-formatted USB drive Release-specific updater selects an appropriate baseline; 3.08 is still required before 3.09 Charger attached; suspend BitLocker first when launching from Windows

All three routes are subject to the permanent 3.09 rollback restriction. Choose the method you can execute without interrupting power or losing access to recovery instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting after the update

The updater says the baseline is wrong

Check the installed version. Install BIOS 3.08 first, allow its restart to finish, and then launch the 3.09 updater. Do not attempt to bypass the version check.

The Linux update is missing

Run fwupdmgr refresh --force followed by fwupdmgr get-updates. If the battery is at 100% and Framework’s documented condition applies, discharge to 95%, reconnect AC and retry.

The laptop does not start as expected after changing Power On AC

Return to Setup through the F12 menu and F2 path, restore the previous Power On AC value, save and retest with a normal shutdown followed by AC reconnection.

A fan error appears

Confirm that BIOS is current. BIOS 3.07 specifically fixed a CPU Fan Not Present error associated with Boot Performance Mode set to Max Battery. If the error remains on 3.09, record the exact message and seek Framework support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated power settings.

Battery Extender status looks wrong

BIOS 3.09 includes a fix for incorrect status after reboot, hibernation or shutdown following timer expiration. Verify the BIOS version first; if it is already 3.09 and the status remains incorrect, document the timing and operating system for support.

A practical change plan

  1. Verify the exact Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel model and installed BIOS.
  2. Update to 3.08 if necessary, then to 3.09, using AC power throughout.
  3. After the update, leave unrelated settings at their defaults until the system boots and charges normally.
  4. Enable or adjust Windows Smart Charging only if the control is actually presented for your installation.
  5. Choose Boot Performance Mode according to workload, without assuming Max Battery is universally better.
  6. Set Power On AC only if automatic startup solves a specific deployment need.
  7. Change Secure Boot state or keys only for a documented requirement, and record the original configuration.
  8. Test one change at a time so a new startup, charging or boot symptom can be traced to the responsible setting.
