Framework’s 2026 Laptop 12 refresh targets the original convertible’s battery-life weakness with Intel Core Series 3, but the size of the improvement is not independently verified. Framework claims up to 70% longer Netflix 4K streaming battery life than the original Core i5-1334U model, based on a specific company test—not a measure of typical mixed-use runtime. The update also adds Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4 on two rear expansion-card positions, and optional backlit keys and fingerprint reader.
What changed in the 2026 Framework Laptop 12?
Announced on August 18, 2026, the refresh replaces the original Laptop 12 processor options with Intel Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7 configurations. Framework founder and CEO Nirav Patel described Core Series 3 as “essentially a shrunk down version of the Core Ultra Series 3 platform we use on Framework Laptop 13 Pro.” That is Framework’s description of the platform, not an independent performance finding.
The convertible retains its 12.2-inch, 1920 × 1200 touchscreen and modular design. Framework lists a single upgradeable SO-DIMM memory slot supporting up to 64GB, an M.2 2230 NVMe storage slot supporting drives up to 2TB, and USI 2.0 stylus support. The new connectivity and input options are particularly useful upgrades for a small laptop intended for flexible everyday use.

- Processor choices: Core 3, Core 5, or Core 7.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7.
- Expansion cards: Thunderbolt 4 is supported in the two rear positions; the two front positions support USB 3.2 Gen 2, according to Framework.
- Optional input features: fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard.
Does the 2026 Laptop 12 last longer on battery?
Framework claims up to 70% longer Netflix 4K streaming battery life compared with the original Laptop 12 configured with an Intel Core i5-1334U. The company described the result as early testing with a Core 5 320. Its product-page footnote identifies a July 2026 Framework test using a Core 5 320, Intel Graphics, 16GB RAM, a WD SN5000S 512GB SSD, 150-nit display brightness, Wi-Fi enabled, Best Power Efficiency mode, and Netflix 4K playback.

That figure is a manufacturer test claim, not an independent review result or a promise of 70% longer battery life in general use. Framework says actual battery life may be lower and varies with configuration, use, software, operating conditions, and power settings. Web browsing, video calls, local workloads, display brightness, and background activity can differ substantially from the stated streaming test. No independent runtime measurements for this generation were established in the available coverage, so buyers should treat the claim as encouraging but not conclusive.
Can you upgrade the original Framework Laptop 12?
Framework says the Core Series 3 mainboard, fingerprint reader, and backlit input cover can be installed in the original Laptop 12. That gives existing owners a potential upgrade path instead of requiring a completely new machine for those components. It does not, by itself, establish whether a board swap is financially worthwhile: compare current part prices, availability, and any other parts you need before deciding.

Memory and SSD upgrades
The laptop has one upgradeable SO-DIMM slot and supports up to 64GB of memory according to Framework’s current specifications. Storage uses a modular M.2 2230 NVMe drive, with configurations supporting up to 2TB. Check both the 2230 form factor and NVMe compatibility when choosing a replacement; a physically longer M.2 2280 SSD is not the specified fit.

Framework announced Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Desktop preinstalled on some configurations. Fedora preinstallation is an option for those configurations, not a guarantee that every distribution will support every component equally. Framework says Core Series 3 and the BE213 Wi-Fi 7 radio require a Linux distribution with kernel 7.1 or newer; fingerprint-reader support relies on libfprint. Check your chosen distribution’s current kernel and fingerprint support before purchasing on the assumption that all features will work out of the box.

Framework reports that around 80% of its Laptop 12 owners use Linux across a range of distributions. That is company customer-research data, not an independently published survey. Fedora Project Lead Jef Spaleta welcomed the preinstalled KDE option, while KDE e.V. President Aleix Pol noted the project’s work on touch and pen input.

What this review can—and cannot—establish
The refresh has concrete advantages on paper: three Core Series 3 processor options, Wi-Fi 7, rear Thunderbolt 4 expansion positions, optional backlit keys and fingerprint reader, and an upgrade path for owners of the original Laptop 12. The battery claim is the central promise, but the 70% figure comes from Framework’s controlled Netflix 4K test. Announcement coverage, including PC Gamer’s report, did not provide independent measurements of this generation’s battery life, performance, thermals, or fan noise. Those real-world trade-offs remain unverified here.
Framework’s support page listed BIOS 3.00 and Windows Driver Bundle v1.00 on September 7, 2026. Support downloads can change; check Framework’s current support page for the latest version before updating or setting up the laptop.
