Reloading is safest when you are behind hard cover, have broken line of sight, or know a teammate is holding the angle. It is most dangerous when started reflexively in an exposed duel or just before an enemy can swing. A reload removes—or sharply limits—your ability to return fire, and the vulnerable window depends on the weapon, magazine state, attachments, settings, patch and network timing.
Use a simple rule: secure the immediate threat first, move into safety, then reload. If an opponent may appear before the animation ends, keep the gun ready, swap to a sidearm or fight with the rounds remaining instead of committing to the reload.
Why a reload can lose an otherwise winnable fight
During a reload, most FPS weapons cannot fire. The opponent can continue shooting, push your position or force you into a second engagement while your magazine is unavailable. The mistake is not reloading itself; it is choosing an exposed moment when the weapon’s downtime is longer than the enemy’s time to reach or shoot you.

It changes with weapon class, whether the magazine is empty, whether a round remains chambered, attachments, perks, animation rules and the current patch. A safe reload can therefore be a tactical decision rather than an automatic response to seeing a partially depleted magazine.

The reload decision that works across most FPS games
- Confirm the immediate threat. After a confirmed elimination, an enemy retreat or a teammate taking over the angle, the risk is lower.
- Break the opponent’s line of sight. Move behind hard cover, around a corner or into a room before starting the animation. Soft cover that can be penetrated may not create enough safety.
- Check your magazine and chamber state. If several rounds remain and an enemy could appear, keep the weapon ready. If the weapon is empty, prioritize cover or a weapon swap rather than standing still in the open.
- Choose the interruption option your game actually supports. Sprint, weapon swap, slide or another input may cancel a reload in one title but preserve, restart or do nothing in another.
- Account for distance and timing. A long-range disengagement may give you several seconds; a close-quarters doorway may give an opponent less than one.
Tactical reload versus empty-magazine reload
What “tactical reload” means
Activision describes a tactical reload as firing only one or two rounds and then replenishing the magazine. You trade a little remaining ammunition for a ready, full magazine during a genuinely safe window. Some games make this materially faster than reloading from an empty weapon, while others use different animations or timing rules.
When to use it
- Use a tactical reload after an engagement when you have cover and expect another fight soon.
- Do not trigger it automatically after every burst if an opponent can immediately challenge your position.
- When the magazine is nearly empty and contact is likely, keep the weapon up, pre-aim the angle and reload only after you have created distance or cover.
Why empty reloads are especially risky
An empty magazine can leave you without a firing option for the full reload cycle. If the weapon also requires a chambering step, the final usable shot may arrive later than the magazine insertion animation suggests. The exact sequence is title- and weapon-specific, so test it rather than assuming a tactical reload and an empty reload are interchangeable.
How long reloads can take
Published timings illustrate why weapon class matters. KRAFTON reported that automatic rifles and submachine guns in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS averaged approximately 3.4 seconds to reload. Its developer letter said light machine guns previously required around 8 seconds—more than twice as long—and that an update reduced their base reload time by approximately 25%, to around 5 seconds.

KRAFTON also noted that an animation refresh changed presentation while weapon handling and timings were kept unchanged. A new-looking animation is therefore not proof of a mechanical timing change.

Can sprinting cancel a reload?
Sometimes. Blizzard’s Black Ops Cold War controls guide documents a setting called “Sprint Cancels Reload”: when enabled, sprinting interrupts the reload cycle. That can save you when an enemy appears during the animation, but it may leave the magazine only partly loaded or return you to the previous state, depending on the title.
Do not transfer that assumption between games. Check the control menu and test sprint, weapon swap, slide and other inputs in a safe mode. Some games cancel immediately, some preserve reload progress, some restart the animation and some do not cancel at all. A cancel is an emergency escape, not a substitute for starting the reload behind cover.
Game-specific guidance
Apex Legends
EA lists Reload as R on PC, Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox and Y on Nintendo Switch 2; controls can be remapped in Settings. Preserve easy access to movement and weapon-swap inputs so a reload does not trap you against an angle.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
The published AR/SMG and LMG figures make weapon selection a reload decision: an LMG’s longer downtime may justify disengaging earlier, carrying a secondary weapon or reloading only after a complete line-of-sight break. Treat the approximately 3.4- and 5-second figures as developer-reported averages or base timings, not a promise for every weapon, magazine or attachment.
Call of Duty
Activision distinguishes tactical reloads from empty reloads and has discussed animation work for reloading while aiming down sights. Black Ops Cold War separately documents the optional Sprint Cancels Reload setting. Since settings and animation rules differ across Call of Duty titles, open the specific game’s controls menu and test the behavior in a private or practice match.
Controls, latency and the “I pressed cancel but still died” problem
Keep reload and movement inputs reachable without releasing the key or stick that controls movement. EA’s control documentation supports remapping, so change the layout if reaching reload forces you to stop strafing or delays a weapon swap.

Online timing can make a narrow cancel feel inconsistent. EA explains that 75 milliseconds of server processing at 60 frames per second is about five frames. In a five-frame window, your local input, server processing and the opponent’s shot may be resolved in an order that differs from an offline drill. Test with your normal connection and leave a safety margin rather than timing a cancel to the last possible frame.

Common reload mistakes and fixes
Reloading on autopilot after every fight
Fix: Ask whether another opponent can reach the angle before the animation ends. If yes, hold the weapon, reposition or use the remaining rounds.
Reloading in the same place where you fired
Fix: Move behind cover or change elevation and angle first. Predictable reload locations let an enemy pre-aim your return path.
Assuming sprint always cancels
Fix: Confirm the setting and outcome in the current title. Learn whether progress is preserved, lost or restarted.
Ignoring attachments and patches
Fix: Recheck reload animations and timings after balance updates or when equipping a reload-changing attachment.

Trusting an animation instead of the weapon state
Fix: Verify when the weapon can actually fire again, including any chambering step. Visual animation changes may not change handling, and handling changes may not look dramatic.
A short practice routine
- Choose the weapon and magazine you use most.
- Measure a tactical reload and an empty reload from the same starting state.
- Repeat from behind cover, while moving, and while aiming down sights if the game supports it.
- Test sprint, weapon swap and slide inputs during the animation.
- Repeat after a patch, attachment change or control remap.
- In live matches, reload only when your measured downtime fits the cover, distance and teammate support available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I wait until the magazine is empty before reloading?
No. Reload when the magazine is low and you have a safe window; deliberately emptying it can leave you defenseless. A tactical reload is preferable when the game makes it faster and an opponent cannot immediately challenge you.
Why do I keep dying while reloading even when I started immediately after a kill?
The elimination may not have secured the area. A second opponent can already be approaching, or your reload may be too long for the distance and cover available. Break line of sight and confirm the angle before starting.
