The FPGBA SP is a demonstrated prototype clamshell handheld that Taki Udon says can play original Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridges. The project is not yet a retail product: its roughly $100 price is a development target, and no release date, final specifications or confirmed ordering details had been announced as of October 14, 2026.
What the FPGBA SP is
FPGBA SP is a folding, Game Boy Advance SP-inspired handheld built around field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware. A transparent-blue prototype demonstrated on October 12, 2026, was shown running a Pokémon game from a physical GBA cartridge. The device is also intended to load additional games from an SD card.
The demonstration establishes the project’s direction, not a finished product. Hardware, firmware, cartridge compatibility and the final industrial design can still change before any possible release.

Does it play original GBA cartridges?
According to developer Taki Udon, yes. His statement was: “We’ve been making a lot of progress on FPGBA SP. Yes, it plays real cartridges, and yes, I am considering a regular FPGBA version. I’m still trying to make this work for around $100.”
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That is the central reason to watch the project. Most inexpensive retro handhelds run game files through software emulation and do not accept the cartridges you already own. FPGBA SP is being designed around a physical cartridge slot, while SD-card storage is intended as an additional feature rather than a replacement for cartridge support.
Compatibility should still be treated as unconfirmed beyond the demonstrated software. There is no published list covering every Game Boy Advance cartridge, save method, accessory or unusual hardware feature, and no independent testing has established that all cartridges will work.

Why FPGA matters
An FPGA can be configured to reproduce the logic of original console hardware at the circuit level. That differs from an Android or Linux handheld that executes a software emulator. In this project, the FPGA approach is important because it is being used to interface with real cartridges while recreating the GBA’s operating behavior.
FPGA does not automatically guarantee perfect compatibility. Cartridge memory types, backup hardware and special peripherals can require additional implementation, and the FPGBA SP remains in development. The available evidence is a public prototype demonstration rather than a completed compatibility certification.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Is the $100 price real?
The approximately $100 figure is a target, not a retail price. Taki Udon said he is “still trying to make this work for around $100,” which indicates an engineering and cost goal rather than an announced MSRP.
No final price, preorder, production quantity or regional pricing had been published by October 14, 2026. A production device could cost more if the display, FPGA, cartridge interface, enclosure, controls, memory, testing or distribution requirements change.

When can you buy it?
There is currently no announced release date or confirmed availability. The project should be considered a prototype until the developer publishes production specifications and a sales channel. Be cautious of listings or deposits claiming to sell the FPGBA SP before those details are officially released.

How it compares with established options
| Device or approach | Cartridge support | Hardware approach | Price information | Availability status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FPGBA SP | Developer says it plays real GBA cartridges; full compatibility not stated | FPGA prototype | Approximately $100 target, not a retail price | Prototype; release date and final specifications not announced as of October 14, 2026 |
| Analogue Pocket | Reported compatibility with more than 2,780 Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges out of the box | FPGA handheld | Reported at $239.99 in the cited 2026 coverage | Established product |
| Software-emulation handhelds | Generally no physical GBA cartridge slot | Emulation on Android or another operating system | Varies by model | Many models are available, but cartridge support is usually absent |
The comparison is straightforward: FPGBA SP promises a much lower price than the reported $239.99 Analogue Pocket if it reaches production, but the Pocket has a documented compatibility figure and established availability. Android-based Konkr Pocket Advance and Anbernic RG SP are other GBA-style alternatives mentioned in current coverage; like most emulation-focused handhelds, they generally do not provide physical cartridge support.

Who should pay attention now?
Owners of original GBA cartridges are the clearest potential audience. The project could offer a less expensive way to play existing collections on a new clamshell device, provided compatibility and build quality hold up in production. Buyers who simply want inexpensive access to GBA software may find an available emulation handheld more practical today, while collectors seeking a proven FPGA platform have an established premium option in the Analogue Pocket.
For now, the sensible decision is to follow official development updates rather than plan a purchase. The demonstrated cartridge support is significant, but the product’s price, timing and final capabilities are not yet guaranteed.
