An FPGA device that will not start, shows a black screen, or refuses to recognize a game usually has a problem in one of four layers: power and video, the microSD boot files, firmware or core metadata, or the game media itself. Identify the platform and the exact symptom first, then work from the least destructive checks (cables, reseating and known-good media) toward repairs such as restoring a Linux image or reformatting a card.
The procedures below cover Analogue Pocket and MiSTer because their failure symptoms overlap but their storage layouts and software tools do not. Disconnect a Pocket from its Dock and other display accessories while isolating the base unit. Do not apply a Pocket firmware procedure to a MiSTer card, or a MiSTer directory layout to a Pocket card.
Start by locating the failure
Observe what happens immediately after pressing power and classify the symptom before changing files. This prevents a game-file problem from being mistaken for a dead console, and it keeps you from rewriting a card when a loose cable is the actual cause.
| What you see | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No lights, no fan, no charging indication | Power source, cable, connector or hardware | Try the correct, known-good supply and cable; remove the Dock or other accessories. |
| Lights appear but the display is black or says no signal | HDMI/display path, resolution handshake or SD boot state | Reseat or replace the HDMI cable, select the correct display input, then reseat the SD card. |
| Menus load but a core or game is missing | Core installation, folder placement or metadata | Check the platform-specific menu and card layout. |
| An “Error,” “Bios” or “Link Mode” message appears on Pocket | Cartridge contacts, adapter, BIOS requirement or incompatible content | Power down, reseat and clean the cartridge, then test a known-good game. |
| A MiSTer core opens but does not list a game | Wrong directory, archive type or unsupported file format | Move the file to /games/<core> and follow that core’s readme. |
If you cannot identify the platform, find the model name on the enclosure or its original documentation before proceeding. “FPGA handheld” is not a universal operating system: Pocket firmware and openFPGA assets use a different structure from a MiSTer Linux image and core collection.

Check power and video before touching software
Analogue Pocket isolation
Remove the Pocket from its Dock and unplug display, USB and cartridge accessories. Charge or power the handheld with a cable and supply known to work with it, then try a normal start. A Dock, display adapter or accessory can introduce a second failure point, so testing the base unit alone gives a useful baseline.
If the screen remains black but the device responds to the power button, continue with the storage and firmware checks below rather than repeatedly forcing shutdown. A black screen can be caused by an incomplete boot, not only a damaged panel.
MiSTer supply requirements
MiSTer FPGA Documentation specifies a 5 V supply rated above 2 A, positive-center polarity and a 2.1 mm × 5.5 mm × 11.0 mm × 11.0 mm barrel plug. The guide names the Mean Well GST18A05-P1J as an example of an upgraded supply. A supply that fits physically but has the wrong voltage, polarity or current rating can prevent startup or damage the board, so do not substitute by appearance alone.

- Confirm the monitor or television is on the input used by MiSTer.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and, if available, another display.
- Power the board down, reseat the SD card, and boot again.
- Only after those checks, verify the 5 V, greater-than-2 A, positive-center supply and the specified barrel dimensions.
This sequence separates a video-link failure from a card that is not allowing Linux to complete its boot. Do not keep swapping power supplies while the board is running.
Use the microSD card as part of the boot chain
On both platforms, the card is not merely game storage. It contains software required for startup, so a card that is unreadable, empty, incorrectly formatted or interrupted during an update can look like a dead system.
Pocket firmware update requirements
For an Analogue Pocket firmware update, format the microSD card as FAT32 or exFAT, place exactly one firmware file at the card’s root (not inside another folder), and fully power the Pocket off before inserting the card. Remove duplicate firmware files and do not rename the file unless Analogue’s current instructions require a particular name.
Recommended Free Tools
Start the update from the normal Pocket process and leave the device undisturbed. Analogue support states: “The update process takes between 3-4 minutes.” The Pocket reboots automatically when the update finishes. Do not remove power, eject the card, press buttons repeatedly or close the lid during that interval. Interrupting the write can leave the firmware incomplete and create a second problem.

After the automatic reboot, remove the update file from the card if the current instructions tell you to do so; retaining an old update file can cause confusion during a later attempt. Keep a backup of saves and personal files before reformatting or deleting anything.
MiSTer card reseat and Linux recovery
MiSTer FPGA Documentation gives a direct first response: “Pop the SD card out and back into the slot. (if the MiSTer can’t read the SD card (or the card is empty) it will fail to boot completely).” Power the board off, remove the card, inspect it for damage or contamination, reinsert it firmly and boot again.
If the card is detected but Linux files are corrupted, the documented recovery is to copy the current installer’s linux folder over the card’s existing linux folder. Preserve game files, saves and configuration data before replacing anything. Copy only the recovery folder specified by the documentation; overwriting the entire card without a backup can remove working cores and personal data.
If a card is not detected on a computer, test the reader and another card before assuming the MiSTer slot has failed. If the card is detected but its contents are missing, stop and make an image or file backup before attempting repair. Reformatting is a last resort because it erases the boot image and game library.
Card capacity and transfer expectations on Pocket
Analogue’s current openFPGA getting-started documentation surfaced support for microSD cards up to 1 TB. Storage support can change with firmware, so verify the capacity limit in the current Pocket support page before buying or reformatting a large card.
Pocket’s developer documentation describes USB-C SD access at approximately 700 KB/sec and says it is intended for small files, not large transfers. A transfer that appears stalled may simply be limited by this mode; use a card reader for a large library and safely eject the card before removing it.
Repair Pocket firmware, cores and openFPGA content
Check whether the problem is the firmware layer
If the Pocket itself reaches its menus but a newly installed core will not launch, do not repeat the firmware update first. Confirm that the core’s files are in the structure required by that core and that the platform matches the current Pocket firmware. A core can be present on the card yet fail to load because one asset, path or metadata file is missing.

- A list of installed cores, which confirms whether the system sees the installation.
- Asset-load details, which can identify a missing or unreadable file when a game starts.
- Boot logs written to

Mount the Pocket’s SD card over USB-C only when the device and the current documentation indicate that mode is available. Copy logs to a computer, then inspect the latest entry after reproducing the failure once. Avoid editing files while the card is mounted by the Pocket and a computer at the same time.
A core appears in Builds but not in the openFPGA menu
When a core folder appears under Developer > Builds but not in the openFPGA menu, a broken or mismatched platform JSON is one possible cause. Compare the folder and metadata with the core’s release documentation, restore the matching JSON, and remove duplicate or partial versions. Do not copy a JSON file from a different platform simply because its filename looks similar; the menu depends on the metadata describing the core and its assets.
If the core still does not appear, remove the incomplete installation, reboot, and install one known-current build. Keep the boot log from the failed attempt so support can distinguish a metadata error from a card-read error.
Make MiSTer recognize a game
Use the required directory
MiSTer game files belong in /games/<core>. For example, NES files go in /games/NES. The folder name must match the core’s expected name; placing an NES file in a generic /games folder can leave it invisible even when the file itself is valid.
After copying files, safely eject the card, insert it into MiSTer and restart or return to the menu as required by the core. If the game list is cached, a full restart is the simplest way to force a rescan.
Respect each core’s file-format rules
MiSTer’s rules differ by media type:
| Content | Accepted handling | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ROMs | Use the extension and archive types accepted by that core’s readme; some cores accept ZIP files. | Assuming every core can open every ZIP or ROM extension. |
| CD-based games | Use CUE/BIN or CHD images. | Leaving the CD image inside a ZIP archive. |
| Hard-disk or computer images | Keep VHD files unzipped. | Compressing the VHD and expecting the core to mount it. |
The core’s readme is the authority when the general rule is unclear. If a ZIP is accepted, check that the archive contains the expected file at its top level rather than another nested ZIP. For CUE/BIN sets, keep the CUE file and every referenced BIN file together, preserving the filenames written inside the CUE.
Separate a bad file from a bad core
Test one known-good game for the same core. If it appears and launches, the original file, archive, cue sheet or image is the likely cause. If no game appears, check the folder name and card readability before replacing the core. This one-file test is more informative than copying an entire library and trying to diagnose several variables at once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix cartridge, adapter and “Error,” “Bios” or “Link Mode” messages on Pocket
Reseat and inspect safely
- Shut the Pocket down normally.
- Remove the cartridge or adapter without forcing it.
- Inspect the contacts for visible dirt, oxidation or damage.
- Clean the contacts with an appropriate cartridge-cleaning method, following the cleaner manufacturer’s directions and avoiding liquid inside the Pocket.
- Reinsert the cartridge fully and start the Pocket.
- If possible, repeat the test with a known-good game.
Analogue’s support catalog includes cartridge-cleaning guidance and adapter documentation, but it does not establish one universal cleaning chemical or a compatibility list for every third-party cartridge. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that a cartridge fits physically.

Interpret the message instead of guessing
An “Error” message can indicate unreadable contacts, an unsupported adapter or damaged media. “Bios” generally points to a required BIOS file or an incorrect BIOS version for the game or core. “Link Mode” can be a mode-selection or accessory-related state rather than proof that the cartridge is permanently defective. Record the exact wording, the game title and whether another known-good cartridge works; those details determine whether to pursue cleaning, a BIOS installation or support.
If the same cartridge fails after cleaning and another cartridge works, the media or adapter is the leading suspect. If several known-good cartridges fail, stop repeatedly inserting them and inspect the Pocket slot or seek service.
Force a shutdown only as a recovery action
Use a normal shutdown whenever the Pocket responds. If an Analogue Pocket cannot shut down normally, remove it from the Dock and hold the power button for five seconds. Analogue warns that changes or savegames in progress will be lost. Treat this as a recovery step after a freeze, not as the routine way to power off during an update or game save.

After a forced shutdown, boot once without accessories and check whether the system reaches the menu. If it does, review the card and logs before launching the failing game again. Repeated forced shutdowns while the card is being written can turn a temporary freeze into corrupted files.
Choose the next fix by symptom, storage and reversibility
The safest troubleshooting path moves from reversible checks to destructive repairs. Use this decision framework:
- No power: isolate accessories and verify the correct supply, cable and connector before touching the card.
- Lights but no video: reseat or replace HDMI on MiSTer, confirm the display input, then reseat the SD card.
- Menu but no core: check Pocket Developer tools or the MiSTer
/games/<core>path, depending on platform. - Core but no game: test one known-good file and apply that core’s archive and image rules.
- Cartridge error: power down, reseat, clean and test another cartridge before changing firmware.
- Card corruption: back up saves and required files, then restore only the documented Linux folder or reinstall the specific Pocket content.
- Persistent failure: stop experimenting after known-good power, display, card, firmware/core installation and game media have each been tested.
Reformatting, overwriting a Linux image or deleting a core is less reversible than reseating a cable or testing one file. Make a complete backup before any step that can erase data.
When to stop and contact the manufacturer
Escalate through the device maker’s support or repair channel when a known-good power supply, display path, storage card, firmware or core installation and game or cartridge all fail. Include the model, firmware version, exact on-screen message, whether the device reaches a menu, the card format, and the results of the known-good tests. For Pocket, include relevant files from /System/Logs/ when Developer tools created them. For MiSTer, describe the supply specifications and whether replacing the HDMI cable and reseating the SD card changed the behavior.
Do not continue firmware updates indefinitely, use a supply with uncertain polarity, or repeatedly force power-off while saves or updates are being written. A concise record of controlled tests gives support more useful information than a series of destructive reinstalls.
