At the scale described in Chapter 8, the author estimates that running both FoxyInvoice products costs about $10–19 a month in listed infrastructure, using roughly $15 as the working figure for break-even arithmetic. That is a small infrastructure bill, not the full cost of running a sustainable business: the estimate leaves the author’s labor and several other expenses out.

What the monthly cost estimate includes

The following figures are the chapter author’s estimates, not independently audited invoices or current provider quotes. The table covers both products at the scale described in the chapter.

Item Author-reported monthly cost Context in Chapter 8
VPS for the whole stack About $8–15 One small instance; the author describes RAM, rather than CPU, as the bottleneck.
Domain About $1 Annual renewal averaged across months.
DNS and email routing $0 Cloudflare free tier.
Email sending About $0 at the reported volume The chapter says the first 3,000+ emails per month are effectively free at its volume, then estimates about $0.10 per 1,000.
Object storage for PDFs and attachments About $0–2 Storage is described as kilobytes to megabytes per user.
Off-box backups About $0–1 S3 plus email; compressed dumps are described as tiny at this scale.
CI/CD $0 GitHub free tier plus self-hosted runners.
Monitoring and logs $0 Access logs and an in-app error console; no paid APM.
Total for both products About $10–19/month About $120–230/year, according to the chapter.

The chapter later simplifies the range to about $15 a month for its break-even examples. That is a working assumption, not a claim that every month falls at the midpoint. The cost ledger and its tradeoffs are reported in Chapter 8.

Why the next free account is estimated to cost almost nothing

Most of the listed bill is fixed or nearly fixed at the reported scale. The author estimates that adding a free account means a few database rows, a welcome email costing about $0.0001, and PDF storage amounting to cents per year. The incremental cost is therefore characterized as effectively zero, though not literally zero.

The free tier’s ten-actions-per-month limit is described as a way to limit database write amplification and keep the product focused, rather than a measure intended to protect margins. These estimates apply to the scale discussed in the chapter; they do not establish how storage, email, or database costs behave at substantially higher usage.

What a paid subscription contributes after processing fees

Chapter 8 assumes payment processing of approximately 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction for invoice payment links and for Pro and Business subscription charges. Under the author’s calculation, a $9 Pro subscription leaves roughly $8.40 after processing.

What the break-even examples do—and do not—show

Using about $15 in monthly fixed infrastructure costs and roughly $8.40 net per $9 Pro charge, the chapter gives these simplified scenarios:

Pro subscribers Approximate monthly receipts after the assumed processing fee How to read the example
2 About $16.80 Covers the chapter’s roughly $15 infrastructure working figure.
10 About $84 Before labor and other omitted expenses.
100 About $840 Before labor and other omitted expenses.
1,000 About $8,400 The author says managed databases and paid observability would enter the budget at this scale.

This is infrastructure break-even arithmetic, not a profit forecast or take-home-income estimate. It does not account for founder labor, taxes, churn, customer acquisition, failed payments, every payment method, or all costs that might rise with usage. It also applies the same per-subscription net assumption across each scenario; the chapter does not provide a full cost model for growth.

Tradeoffs behind the low bill

Self-managed database instead of managed Postgres

The author says the stack does not use a managed database, comparing that choice with a stated $15–80 monthly cost at what the chapter calls “you should use managed Postgres” checkpoints. For the current scale, the author considers nightly size-checked off-box backups and volume-backed containers sufficient; further details are deferred to Chapter 6. This explains the author’s own cost choice, not a general recommendation to self-manage production databases.

Basic logging instead of paid observability

The chapter reports using access logs and an in-app error console rather than paid observability. That keeps the listed monitoring cost at $0, but the chapter does not quantify the operational or reliability tradeoffs. The author says paid observability would enter the budget at 1,000 Pro subscribers.

The largest omitted cost is the author’s time

The ledger does not assign a dollar value to hundreds of evenings spent building, a standing 20-minute daily operating cadence, or occasional 2 a.m. incidents. The chapter explicitly treats that work as an unpriced investment. Its author puts the contrast this way: “The machine costs about a takeaway dinner a month; the real investment is your evenings.”

That distinction matters when interpreting the small monthly total: it describes infrastructure at one point in a product’s development, while a founder’s time and operational responsibilities remain real costs even when they do not appear on a hosting bill.

Read the numbers in the context of the project

At the time described, the author reported users in the dozens, paid subscriptions at approximately zero, and one power user. The chapter also says six-month founding-code promotions deferred revenue, marketing spend to date was $0, and the author relied on the product gallery, a build-in-public series, and replies to users for marketing. Those details make the subscriber scenarios hypothetical illustrations rather than a report of recurring revenue already achieved.

Chapter 8 was presented as a first-person build-in-public report by its author, identified in the indexed result as Lith SEO. The figures here should be read as that author’s account of the project’s costs at the time, not as a market benchmark for SaaS businesses.
