Four University of Lausanne master’s students covered two 100-square-metre sections of Switzerland’s Glacier 3000 with sheep’s wool in June 2026. After a summer of measurements, the wool prototypes appeared to protect the ice about as well as a conventional synthetic geotextile—but the project’s data is still being analysed, so it is not yet proof that wool can replace plastic glacier covers at scale.
What the Swiss glacier experiment tested
The Keep It Wool project installed two wool covers beside a same-size synthetic control at Glacier 3000 in Les Diablerets, in the canton of Vaud, on 22 June 2026. Each wool prototype covered 10 by 10 metres (100 m²). CleantechAlps reported densities of 400 g/m² and 750 g/m² for the two wool solutions.
Stakes in the covered areas were measured every two weeks through September to track how much snow and ice remained. The first observations described the wool covers as comparable to the conventional geotextile after one summer, with only limited differences between the wool versions and the control. The measurements still require formal analysis.

Who carried out the trial
UNIL master’s students Maxime Galley, Elliot Gaffiot, José Bastidas and Léonard Duloube led the fieldwork. The experiment grew out of a 2025 partnership between the Summit Foundation and UNIL’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research.

Fisolan AG manufactured the prototypes, while the Association Filature de l’Avançon connected the project with the wool sector. Glacier 3000 hosted the installation. GLAMOS researchers Mathias Huss and Mauro Fischer advised on the scientific setup, and Innosuisse provided financial support.
Why replace synthetic glacier covers?
Glacier geotextiles are generally made from polyester or polypropylene. They are placed over selected, high-value areas such as ski infrastructure or research sites during the melt season. SWI swissinfo.ch, citing Keystone-SDA reporting in 2026, said existing synthetic tarpaulins can reduce melting in covered areas by about 50% to 70%.
The environmental concern is fibre loss. Wind, rain, snow and repeated handling can wear synthetic fabric and detach fibres that enter snow, ice and mountain water. The Summit Foundation says those particles may eventually reach food chains.

Wool has a different material profile. It is renewable, biodegradable and naturally insulating, and it can be sourced locally. The Summit Foundation says as much as 70% of Swiss wool is destroyed because many sheep are raised primarily for meat, milk or landscape maintenance. Turning some of that underused fibre into protective material could create a use for a local by-product.
What the first-season evidence shows—and does not show

That distinction matters. A preliminary field observation can show that a material is worth investigating; it cannot establish that the material is ready for widespread deployment or has a lower overall environmental footprint.
How small is the intervention?
Protective textiles cover only around 0.02% of Switzerland’s glacier area. The Summit Foundation estimates that these covers preserve approximately 300,000 cubic metres of snow each year, while nearly one billion cubic metres of Swiss glacier ice is lost annually. The figures put the experiment in perspective: even a successful wool replacement would affect only a tiny fraction of total glacier loss.

Glacier covers are therefore a local preservation tool, not a way to stop climate-driven retreat. The Summit Foundation says cutting greenhouse-gas emissions remains the main measure for limiting long-term glacier loss.
What researchers must test next
Before wool could be considered for broader use, future seasons would need to compare the materials on the same practical criteria:
- Melt reduction: continuous measurements across different weather and snow conditions.
- Weather life: performance under wind, precipitation, ultraviolet radiation, freezing and thawing.
- Fibre release: whether wool sheds material and how any fibres move through meltwater.
- End of life: whether covers can be reused, repaired, composted or otherwise safely processed.
- Logistics: roll weight, installation time, anchoring, transport and removal in steep terrain.
- Supply: whether enough suitable Swiss wool can be collected and manufactured consistently.
- Lifecycle impact: energy, water, treatment chemicals, transport, cost and emissions from production through disposal.
Those comparisons should include several years and multiple sites. A single 100 m² installation cannot reveal how wool behaves on larger, windier or more heavily trafficked glacier areas.

Can sheep’s wool save glaciers?
It can potentially provide a biodegradable local material for protecting specific glacier sections, and the 2026 trial produced an encouraging first-season signal. It cannot reverse overall glacier retreat, and the available evidence does not yet demonstrate a complete replacement for synthetic geotextiles. The project’s value is as a carefully bounded field test: it shows that wool deserves further engineering and environmental study while keeping the central climate solution clear—rapidly reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

Why are synthetic glacier covers a microplastic concern?
Polyester and polypropylene fabrics can lose fibres through wind, precipitation, ultraviolet exposure and wear. Those fibres may enter snow, ice and mountain waters.
Is wool a complete solution to glacier retreat?
