Fossil teeth—especially their enamel—often preserve original chemical and isotope signals better than fossil bone. Enamel is comparatively resistant to diagenetic alteration, the chemical and mineral change that occurs after burial. That advantage is not universal: preservation depends on the specimen, burial setting, tissue sampled, isotope system and environmental question. Well-preserved bone can still record diet, ecology, climate, habitat and movement, while either tissue can produce misleading results if alteration is not detected.

What the comparison actually asks

“Teeth versus bones” is not a single laboratory test. Researchers choose a hard tissue and an isotope system to answer a particular question about an animal’s life. The same fossil may preserve a useful dietary signal but a damaged climate signal, or retain a microscopic growth pattern while its original chemistry has been replaced by minerals from groundwater.

The 2025 review by Rhiannon E. Stevens, Sarah Pederzani, Kate Britton and Sarah K. Wexler describes bones and teeth as archives of dietary habits, other behaviours, and environmental and climatic conditions during an animal’s lifetime. Its coverage includes carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, hydrogen, strontium and zinc isotope systems. These systems can address different combinations of diet, vegetation, food webs, habitat, climate, seasonality and mobility.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: start with the environmental question, then select the tissue most likely to retain the relevant signal and verify that it survived fossilization.

Can fossil teeth tell us more about ancient environments than bones?

Often, yes—if “teeth” means well-preserved enamel and the target signal is one that enamel can retain. Enamel’s dense mineral structure gives it a better chance of preserving original elemental and isotope composition over geological time. That can make an enamel sample a stronger starting point for questions about diet, environmental water, habitat or geographic movement.

But the comparison is probabilistic rather than absolute. A tooth from a chemically aggressive burial setting can be altered, while a bone from a stable, protective setting can retain a useful signal. The relevant comparison is not an ideal tooth against an average bone; it is the actual enamel, dentine or bone available, the isotope system being measured and the evidence that the original composition remains.

Why enamel often has the preservation advantage

Enamel is a highly mineralized archive

Tooth enamel is the hardest, most mineral-rich tissue in the vertebrate skeleton. Its dense structure contains little organic material and is less permeable than many bone tissues. That makes it comparatively resistant to the movement of fluids and replacement reactions that can modify a fossil after burial.

A review by Thomas Tütken and T. W. Vennemann concluded that “tooth enamel especially is least affected by diagenetic alteration and able to preserve original elemental and isotopic compositions over geological time scales of millions of years.” This is a general finding about enamel’s relative resistance, not a guarantee that every fossil tooth retains a biological signal.

Bone is more open to post-burial exchange

Bone has a porous mineral framework and an organic collagen component. After burial, groundwater, sediment minerals and changing chemical conditions can interact with that structure. Organic material may decay, mineral surfaces can recrystallize, and elements can be added, removed or redistributed. Those processes may shift an isotope ratio away from the animal’s original composition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bone alteration is not automatic, and a fossil bone can remain informative. The point is that bone generally requires a more careful preservation assessment before its chemistry is treated as environmental evidence.

“Better preserved” is proxy-specific

Enamel’s resistance matters only if the signal being measured is present in enamel and the sampled area has survived. A tooth can be cracked, dissolved, stained or chemically overprinted. Conversely, a bone can retain a robust signal under favorable burial conditions. No universal percentage or ranking establishes how much better teeth are than bones across all fossils and isotope systems.

What fossil bone can still reveal

Chemical and isotope evidence

Bone remains an important archive for palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoecological work. Depending on the tissue and isotope system, measurements can contribute evidence about what an animal ate, the environments it used, climatic conditions and movement through landscapes. Bone can also be valuable when teeth are absent, too small to sample, or unsuitable for the selected proxy.

Microstructure and life history

Bone and tooth microstructure can preserve growth marks and other histological features. These features may record aspects of growth, development and life history even when chemical interpretation is limited. A specimen therefore should not be dismissed merely because its isotope composition has been altered; structural information may remain useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Context can outweigh tissue type

Burial chemistry, sediment permeability, groundwater movement and the time available for alteration all influence preservation. A well-protected bone from a stable setting may be more reliable than a heavily altered tooth from an aggressive chemical environment. Tissue choice improves the odds of preservation, but specimen-level testing determines whether that advantage applies.

Match the isotope system to the environmental question

The isotope system determines which tissue is useful and what environmental story can reasonably be reconstructed. The following guide summarizes the scope identified in the 2025 review; it is not a promise that every system works in every specimen.

Isotope system Questions it may inform Why tissue and preservation matter
Carbon Dietary resources, vegetation and aspects of habitat Original composition must survive in the sampled mineral or organic fraction; altered material can blur dietary or habitat contrasts.
Nitrogen Trophic position, food webs and diet-related ecology Applications are tissue- and method-specific. Enamel nitrogen is an emerging approach with documented preservation, sample-size and precision constraints.
Sulfur Diet, ecological setting and distinctions among food sources Interpretation depends on local geology and ecology, while diagenetic additions can change the measured signal.
Oxygen Environmental water, climate and aspects of habitat or seasonality Signals can reflect the animal’s water and environmental history only if the original mineral composition remains intact.
Hydrogen Environmental water and climatic or geographic patterns Water-related interpretation requires an appropriate regional baseline and a preserved tissue signal.
Strontium Geographic origin, habitat use and mobility Comparisons with local geology are essential; later elemental exchange can imitate or obscure movement.
Zinc Dietary and physiological information Meaning depends on the tissue analyzed, the biological context and tests showing that the original composition survived.

These categories overlap. A single study may combine several isotope systems to separate diet from climate or mobility from local geology. The correct choice is the one that best matches the question and can be validated in the available tissue.

How fossilization can change the signal

Diagenesis is the central risk

Diagenesis includes the chemical and mineral changes that occur after burial. Fluids can dissolve portions of a fossil, transport elements into its pores, or precipitate new minerals. Recrystallization can alter the structure that originally held an isotope ratio. Organic components such as collagen may be lost, while the mineral phase can exchange elements with surrounding sediment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because these processes may be invisible in a photograph, a measured isotope ratio is not automatically a biological signal. Researchers must establish that the relevant tissue and chemical fraction survived well enough for the intended interpretation.

Preservation checks should precede interpretation

A defensible study treats preservation as a separate question from environmental interpretation. A practical workflow is:

  1. Define the question. Specify whether the target is diet, food-web position, climate, habitat, seasonality, geographic origin or mobility.
  2. Identify the tissue. Record whether the sample is enamel, dentine, cortical bone, trabecular bone or another fraction. Do not assume that a tooth is a single chemically uniform material.
  3. Document specimen context. Note stratigraphic position, sediment, burial setting and any visible damage or mineral coatings. These details help frame alteration risk.
  4. Inspect microstructure and mineral condition. Determine whether the tissue retains its original structure and whether cracks, dissolution or secondary minerals could affect the result.
  5. Test the selected chemical fraction. Use preservation and alteration checks appropriate to the isotope system and tissue rather than relying on a single screening measurement.
  6. Compare with independent evidence. Where possible, evaluate multiple specimens, tissues, isotope systems or environmental baselines. Agreement strengthens an interpretation; disagreement is a reason to investigate alteration or ecological complexity.
  7. Report uncertainty. State what was measured, what preservation evidence supports it and which environmental conclusions remain unresolved.

This sequence prevents the common error of treating an attractive isotope value as proof before establishing that the fossil still contains the original archive.

What makes a comparison between teeth and bones fair?

Researchers should compare like with like whenever possible. A tooth and a bone from different layers, species or burial settings may differ for reasons unrelated to tissue durability. Matching specimens by stratigraphic context, age or developmental stage and ecological setting helps separate tissue effects from environmental differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sampled location also matters. Enamel, dentine, cortical bone and trabecular bone do not have identical structures or histories. A result should identify exactly which fraction was powdered or analyzed, because a broad label such as “tooth” or “bone” hides information needed to judge preservation.

Replication is another safeguard. Results from several specimens that share a context are more informative than a single striking value. Agreement among independent tissues or isotope systems can strengthen an interpretation, while a mismatch may signal alteration, a changing diet or habitat, seasonal behavior, or a difference in the life period represented.

Teeth do not all represent the same time interval

A tooth and a bone from the same animal need not record the same part of its life. Tooth tissues form according to their own growth schedules, and different portions of a tooth may capture different developmental periods. Bone can remodel during life, potentially blending signals over time, while some bone structures preserve more localized histories.

The available evidence supports using bone and tooth microstructure for life-history questions, but it does not establish a universal quantitative comparison of the time windows represented by a tooth and a bone. Researchers should therefore avoid assuming that one tooth and one bone are directly interchangeable snapshots. Sampling location, tissue type, age at formation and remodeling history all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This timing issue changes how environmental clues should be phrased. An enamel value may describe conditions during formation of the sampled region, whereas a remodeled bone value may integrate information over a different interval. Neither automatically represents the animal’s entire lifetime. Statements should match the formation and remodeling history that is actually known.

What the enamel nitrogen method shows

A 2023 Communications Biology study examined nitrogen isotope composition in tooth enamel as a tool for reconstructing food webs and trophic position. It illustrates both the promise of enamel and the limits of broad claims about it.

Enamel nitrogen could expand dietary and ecological studies when conventional archives are unavailable or poorly preserved. However, the method faces preservation challenges, and its practical use can be constrained by sample requirements and analytical precision. It should be treated as a proxy-specific, developing approach—not as evidence that enamel outperforms bone for every environmental question.

The broader lesson is methodological: a tissue’s reputation for durability does not remove the need to validate the particular isotope system, sampling protocol and precision required by the study.

Choosing between a fossil tooth and a fossil bone

Situation More defensible starting point Reasoning and caution
You need the best chance of retaining original elemental or isotope composition over long geological periods. Well-preserved enamel Enamel is generally less affected by diagenetic alteration, but specimen-level testing remains necessary.
You need growth marks or other histological life-history evidence. Whichever tissue retains intact microstructure Bone and tooth microstructure can both be informative; chemical preservation is not the only criterion.
You need a nitrogen-based food-web reconstruction. The tissue validated for the selected method, including enamel where appropriate Enamel nitrogen is promising but has preservation, sample-size and precision limitations.
Teeth are absent or too small to sample. Preserved bone Bone can retain useful dietary, ecological and climatic signals when alteration is assessed.
You need mobility or geographic-origin information. Either tissue, selected for the strontium system and local baseline Later elemental exchange and incomplete geological reference data can confound movement interpretations.
The specimen shows substantial alteration. Neither tissue should be accepted without qualification Consider structural evidence, independent specimens or a different proxy rather than forcing a chemical conclusion.

How to read an isotope result cautiously

An isotope value is evidence within a model, not a complete environmental history by itself. Carbon may help distinguish dietary resources or vegetation, but diet and habitat can overlap. Oxygen and hydrogen can relate to environmental water and climate, yet interpretation requires an appropriate regional baseline. Strontium can inform geographic origin or movement only when local geology is characterized and later elemental exchange has been excluded.

Similarly, a nitrogen result may indicate trophic position or food-web structure, but only when the method and tissue have been validated for that purpose. Sulfur and zinc add dietary or ecological information in suitable contexts, but their meaning depends on biological and geological background. Combining systems can narrow competing explanations, while a single ratio should be described with appropriately limited language.

Common interpretation mistakes

“Teeth are always accurate”

Enamel’s relative resistance does not make every tooth pristine. Cracks, dissolution, mineral replacement and local burial chemistry can compromise even a dense enamel sample.

“Bone is useless for environmental reconstruction”

That conclusion conflicts with the demonstrated archive value of fossil bones and teeth together. Bone can preserve isotope evidence and microstructural information; it simply demands careful evaluation of alteration and the relevant tissue fraction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using one isotope as a complete environmental history

Diet, climate, habitat and mobility can produce overlapping chemical effects. A single ratio rarely answers every question. Combining suitable systems and independent context is more informative than assigning one proxy an overly broad meaning.

Ignoring what was actually sampled

“Tooth” and “bone” are broad labels. Enamel, dentine, cortical bone and trabecular bone have different structures and histories. A result should identify the tissue, the sampled location and the chemical fraction so readers can judge whether the conclusion matches the material.

Assuming contemporaneous tissues

Different tissues may record different life stages or time spans. Interpret comparisons only after considering growth, remodeling and the age at which each tissue formed.

Confusing preservation with precision

A durable tissue may still yield a technically imprecise measurement if the sample is small or the method has limited analytical precision. The 2023 enamel-nitrogen example shows why preservation quality and measurement quality must both be reported.

A defensible conclusion for researchers and readers

When the objective is to preserve original elemental or isotope composition, well-preserved tooth enamel is usually the stronger first candidate because it is comparatively resistant to diagenetic alteration. That is a probability advantage, not a universal rule. Fossil bone remains valuable for isotope studies, palaeoecology, climate reconstruction and life-history research, particularly when its structure and chemistry pass preservation checks.

The most reliable interpretation comes from matching three things: the environmental question, the isotope system and the tissue that demonstrably retains the relevant signal. If those three do not align, a precise measurement can still produce an inaccurate story about the past.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fossil teeth always better than fossil bones for environmental clues?

No. Well-preserved enamel often has the best chance of retaining original elemental and isotope composition, but alteration can affect any fossil. A well-preserved bone may be more informative than a damaged or chemically overprinted tooth.

What environmental questions can fossil teeth and bones answer?

Depending on the isotope system, they can provide evidence about diet, trophic position, food webs, vegetation, habitat, climate, environmental water, seasonality, geographic origin and mobility. The tissue and preservation must suit the specific question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is enamel usually more resistant to alteration?

Enamel is highly mineralized, dense and relatively poor in organic material, so post-burial fluids and replacement reactions generally have less access than they do in porous bone. This is a relative advantage, not a guarantee of pristine preservation.

Can altered fossil bone still be useful?

Yes. Bone may retain microstructure, growth marks or other histological evidence even when its chemistry is compromised. Chemical results can also remain useful when preservation tests show that the relevant fraction survived.

Does one tooth record an animal’s entire life?

Not necessarily. Different parts of a tooth form at different times, and bone may remodel or integrate signals over another interval. Sampling location, developmental age and remodeling history must be considered.

What is special about nitrogen isotopes in enamel?

A 2023 Communications Biology study explored enamel nitrogen for reconstructing food webs and trophic position. The approach is promising but faces preservation challenges, sample requirements and analytical-precision limits, so it is not a universal replacement for bone methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do scientists check whether a fossil signal is original?

They document burial context, inspect microstructure and mineral condition, identify the exact tissue and chemical fraction, apply alteration checks suited to the isotope system, and compare multiple specimens, tissues, isotope systems or environmental baselines where possible.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Well-preserved tooth enamel often preserves environmental isotope and elemental clues better than fossil bone because it is less vulnerable to diagenetic alteration. But bones remain valuable archives, and neither tissue should be interpreted until its preservation, isotope system and life-history timing fit the environmental question.
