Fossify Gallery is an open-source Android gallery app for browsing and managing photos and videos, with project-listed tools for editing images, removing EXIF metadata, locking media, and recovering deletions. It is a fit for people who want a local gallery and hands-on controls—not proof that no data can ever leave a device. The project publishes its source code, and F-Droid lists the app under the GNU GPL v3.0-only license.
What Fossify Gallery does—and what “leave your pictures alone” means
Fossify Gallery is a gallery app, not a cloud backup service. Its project describes features for organizing and working with media on an Android device. The available product information does not establish an independent privacy audit or prove that the app can never transmit data. “Leave your pictures alone” is best understood as a preference for local control, not a guarantee about every data flow.
The project lists these capabilities; they are developer-stated features, not independently tested results:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Basic photo edits: crop, resize, rotate, flip, draw, and apply filters.
- Remove EXIF metadata, which can include GPS coordinates and camera details.
- Protect selected photos or videos, or lock app access, with a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint.
- Recover deleted media from a built-in recycle bin.
- Customize the interface and controls, and handle a range of image and video formats, including JPEG, JPEG XL, PNG, MP4, MKV, RAW, SVG, GIF, and AVIF.
See the Fossify Gallery project and README for the developer’s feature descriptions and source code.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

How it differs from Google Photos
The useful distinction is the job you want the app to do. Fossify Gallery is positioned as a local gallery with on-device media controls. Google Photos includes sharing features; its sharing behavior should not be confused with a guarantee that a recipient cannot retain a copy.
Google says that stopping sharing prevents other people from seeing an album, but it does not delete photos or videos they already downloaded or copied. That is a specific limit of revoking access: a share setting can close the route to the album, but it cannot recall a separate copy. It is not evidence that Google Photos secretly edits originals, uploads every image, or keeps access after every setting change. For the precise sharing caveat, see Google Photos Help: Stop sharing an album, and manage settings.

Does Fossify Gallery upload photos?
The cited project and package pages describe gallery functions and Android permissions, but do not establish a complete, independently verified account of network behavior. They are not enough to promise that no data ever leaves the phone. If that assurance is essential, review the current source and package, check the app’s network access in your own setup, and avoid treating a privacy-oriented feature list as a security audit.

The project says Fossify Gallery can strip EXIF data, including GPS coordinates and camera details. That can help remove embedded location information from a photo when using the feature. The published description does not specify every metadata field it removes or establish independent test results, so check the exported file’s metadata if you need to verify a particular image.

Android compatibility, license, and permissions
F-Droid lists Fossify Gallery version 1.13.1, added on 18 February 2026, for Android 8.0 and newer. It identifies the license as GPL-3.0-only and lists APK architectures arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86, and x86_64. Confirm that your Android version and device package match the current listing before installing.
The F-Droid permission inventory includes access to shared storage and media, permission to modify or delete shared-storage content, reading location data from media, fingerprint authentication, notifications, starting at boot, setting wallpaper, and preventing sleep. Storage access supports gallery work such as viewing or managing files; reading location data can support access to media metadata, while fingerprint access supports biometric locking. The presence of a permission is not, by itself, evidence of misuse. F-Droid’s listing is available at Fossify Gallery on F-Droid.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want an open-source Android gallery with local browsing, basic edits, metadata-removal controls, locks, and a recycle bin.
- Look elsewhere or check your workflow carefully if you need automatic cloud backup, cross-device synchronization, or collaborative sharing; the cited materials do not establish Fossify Gallery as a replacement for those services.
- Verify before relying on it if you require a specific metadata field to be removed or a strong guarantee about data transmission. The listed features do not substitute for a verified audit.
