Use Photo Mode for any Forza Horizon 6 challenge that must register in the game. Its documented Photo Challenge flow shows a camera marker, an on-screen subject mask and a snapshot that can trigger recognition. Replay Camera is useful for reviewing a race and finding a dramatic moment, but no official Forza Horizon 6 guidance currently confirms that a replay frame can activate a Photo Challenge. If a challenge matters, recreate the qualifying scene in Photo Mode rather than relying on a replay capture.
The short answer: Photo Mode is the reliable challenge camera
Photo Mode and Replay Camera serve different jobs. Photo Mode is the capture tool tied to the documented Photo Challenge workflow. You travel to the marked location, fit the required subject inside the mask, take the picture and wait for the game to acknowledge it. That gives you a visible recognition path before you move on.
Replay Camera is primarily for looking back at a completed run. It can help you spot a jump, drift, overtake or scenic instant worth recreating, but the available official material does not say that replay-camera frames are scanned for Photo Challenge requirements. Treating a replay image as an automatic submission is therefore a gamble.
This distinction matters in Forza Horizon 6, which launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19, 2026. Premium Edition Early Access began on May 15, and Playground Games announced a PlayStation 5 release for later in 2026. Menu labels and controller prompts can vary by platform and future updates, so use the on-screen prompt if it differs from a community control guide.

How to complete a Forza Horizon 6 Photo Challenge
The following sequence follows the documented in-game process. Perform the recognition check before leaving the area; a beautiful image that never registers does not complete the objective.
- Locate the camera icon. Open the map and find the camera marker associated with the Photo Challenge. Select it so you know which location and subject the challenge is asking for.
- Drive to the marker. Travel to the marked spot in the required vehicle or with any other conditions shown by the challenge. Continue until the Photo Challenge area and its subject prompt become active.
- Look for the subject mask. The on-screen mask is the important validation clue. It indicates where the required car, landmark or other subject must appear in the frame. If the mask is absent, you may not be close enough, may be at the wrong marker or may not have activated the challenge.
- Position the car and camera. Move the vehicle and adjust the Photo Mode camera until the required subject sits inside the mask. Check the whole frame rather than assuming that a partial overlap counts.
- Take the snapshot. Capture the image from Photo Mode, then pause long enough to see whether the game displays a completion, reward or recognition response.
- Confirm before leaving. If there is no response, do not assume success. Recheck the marker, subject, vehicle requirements and mask alignment and take another Photo Mode shot.
- Save the result. Keep the picture in the in-game gallery. When you need an image file outside the game, use Save & Share or the screenshot function built into your Xbox, PC or PlayStation system.
Why the mask matters
A free-form scenic photograph and a challenge photograph are not the same thing. The mask is the visible part of the challenge’s recognition path: it tells you that the game is evaluating a particular subject and composition. Frame the requested subject within that guide before pressing the capture command. If you only take a picture because the scene looks right, you may save an attractive image without satisfying the objective.
What to do when a Photo Challenge does not register
Use the following checks in order. They address the conditions that can prevent the documented workflow from reaching its recognition step.

- Missing requirement: Read the challenge text again for a specified car, landmark or other condition. A correctly framed photograph can still fail if the vehicle or subject is wrong.
- Capture made from the wrong camera: Return to Photo Mode and take the snapshot there. A replay frame is not a documented substitute.
- No visible response: Wait for the reward or completion indication, then take a second Photo Mode shot if nothing appears. Do not leave until the game confirms the result.
- Image saved but objective incomplete: Gallery storage proves that a picture was kept, not that the challenge was accepted. Repeat the marker, mask and snapshot sequence.
If an update changes the interface, follow the current on-screen prompt. The essential test remains the same: the challenge should present its subject guide and acknowledge the Photo Mode snapshot.

Using Replay Camera without risking the challenge
Use replay to find the moment
Replay Camera is valuable when the best opportunity happens during a race or an exploration run. Review the replay to identify the jump, corner, traffic interaction, weather break or landmark composition you want. Note the location, vehicle position and approximate timing.
Recreate the scene in Photo Mode
After scouting, return to the relevant area, activate the Photo Challenge camera marker and reproduce the moment in free driving. Place the required subject inside the mask and take the qualifying photograph from Photo Mode. This two-stage method keeps replay’s creative advantages while using the documented recognition path.
Do not assume replay validation
Neither the official launch material nor the available in-game documentation establishes that Replay Camera frames trigger the subject mask or award Photo Challenge rewards. Exact replay free-camera controls are also not stated in the authoritative material available for this comparison. Unless Playground Games adds a clear rule in an update or help screen, regard a replay image as a reference, not a submission.
Photo Mode controls and camera handling
A community controls guide lists D-pad Up as the default console shortcut for Photo Mode and P on a keyboard. These are community-documented defaults rather than a guarantee for every control scheme, remap or platform build; check the control settings and the prompt shown by your game.

The same community guidance describes moving a free camera around the car and places the camera at roughly 12 meters in its described setup. That distance is a practical composition reference, not an official challenge limit. Use the mask, not a measured distance, to decide whether the qualifying subject is framed correctly.
For precise placement, first put the car where the challenge requires it, then use the free camera to solve the composition. Small changes in camera height and lateral position can keep the subject inside the mask without moving the vehicle out of the trigger area. If a camera move causes the guide to disappear, return to the marker and reactivate the challenge before capturing.
Saving, exporting and sharing challenge photos
Photo Mode images can be retained in the game’s gallery. When you want to show the result outside Forza Horizon 6, the documented options are Save & Share and the capture tools supplied by your platform.
- In-game record: Save the image to the Photo Mode gallery so you can review it later.
- External file: Use Save & Share or your Xbox, PC or PlayStation screenshot function when you need a file in the platform’s media library.
- Proof of completion: Keep the game’s reward or completion response as the meaningful evidence that the challenge registered; an exported image alone does not prove validation.
Do not confuse Photo Challenges with other photography features
Journal photography
Xbox Wire describes the Journal photography feature as a way to capture points of interest, iconic landmarks and natural wonders while exploring. That is an exploration and collection use case. It explains why you may see photography prompts outside a specific Photo Challenge, but it does not establish that every Journal image satisfies a challenge objective.

EventLab Challenge Creator
Official Forza material places Challenge Creator within EventLab and says players can build and play challenges anywhere in Japan. EventLab challenges are custom activities created by players, so their rules can differ from the standard Photo Challenge flow described above. If an EventLab creator gives a specific camera instruction, follow that event’s text and on-screen prompts rather than assuming the same validation logic.
What rewards can you expect?
Community guides describe Photo Challenge rewards in the range of 5,000–10,000 CR, one Wheelspin and five Festival Playlist points. Those figures come from community guidance and should not be treated as a universal or permanently fixed official table; rewards can vary with the challenge, playlist or an update. The reliable action is to wait for the reward screen or completion response after the Photo Mode snapshot.

- You need the objective to count: Choose Photo Mode and follow the marker-mask-snapshot sequence.
- You want to discover the best instant: Review the replay first, then recreate the composition in Photo Mode if it must count.
- You only want a cinematic image: Use whichever camera gives you the composition you prefer, but do not label a replay capture as challenge-complete without an explicit confirmation.
- You are working in an EventLab challenge: Read the creator’s instructions and use the camera method that event specifies.
- You are photographing scenery for the Journal: Use the exploration photography feature; it is separate from proving a Photo Challenge completion.
Bottom line for FH6 challenge shots
Photo Mode is the better and safer choice because its challenge workflow is documented: camera marker, subject mask, snapshot and recognition response. Replay Camera remains useful for scouting and creative review, but Forza Horizon 6 documentation does not confirm replay-frame validation. Capture the final qualifying image in Photo Mode, verify the reward or completion response, and then save or export the picture.
