A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works closely with customer teams to turn real-world problems into technical systems deployed in production. The role combines engineering with customer delivery: depending on the opening, an FDE may help define the problem, design and build a solution, launch it, support adoption, and feed lessons back to product or research teams. The title is not defined identically by every employer, so the job description matters more than the label.
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
OpenAI’s Seattle FDE listing describes the work as leading complex deployments of frontier models in production alongside strategic customers. It spans the path from understanding a customer’s needs to delivering a working system, rather than stopping at a recommendation or prototype.
In that listing, the work includes:
- Discovering customer needs and turning them into a technical scope.
- Designing and building a solution, including writing code directly when needed.
- Rolling the system out in production and supporting customer adoption.
- Evaluating how the system performs and sharing feedback with product and research teams.
- Turning lessons from deployments into reusable tools, patterns, or playbooks.
A related San Francisco listing uses the title “Forward Deployed Software Engineer” and puts more emphasis on full-stack solution development, project planning, and coding alongside customer engineering teams. It also calls for turning engagement lessons into reusable abstractions and internal knowledge. These examples show why the role can sit between product engineering and consulting without being reducible to either: the engineer both works with the customer and helps deliver the technical system.

How the role changes by domain
Some openings add substantial industry-specific work. OpenAI’s healthcare listing describes deployments across clinical, operational, and member-facing workflows. It calls out integrations with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, data platforms, electronic health records, claims systems, and operational tools, as well as evaluation criteria and the constraints of regulated environments. Those requirements belong to that healthcare opening; they should not be assumed for every FDE job.

What skills and experience do employers ask for?
Across the cited OpenAI listings, the recurring profile combines hands-on software delivery with the ability to work through customer needs and ambiguous requirements:
- Production engineering: experience building and shipping software, including frontend and backend work. The Seattle listing names Python, JavaScript, or comparable technology stacks.
- Discovery and system design: the ability to clarify a problem, scope the work, plan delivery, and design a system that can move from prototype to production.
- Customer-facing communication: working effectively with customer engineers and domain experts, understanding their needs, and explaining technical choices clearly.
- Practical judgment: making trade-offs among scope, speed, quality, and delivery risk when a project is moving quickly or requirements are not fully settled.
- Relevant deployment expertise: experience with AI or model deployments for generative-AI roles; some sector-specific jobs also call for industry knowledge or hands-on integration experience.
Experience requirements vary by opening. The general Seattle listing asks for 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience, including customer-facing work. The healthcare listing describes a wider range of relevant backgrounds, including software or ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, healthcare infrastructure, and hands-on integration. Neither example establishes a universal minimum for the occupation.

How much does a forward deployed engineer make?
The figures below are base-pay ranges published in specific OpenAI job listings and observed in 2026. They are examples from individual openings, not a market-wide average or median.
| Opening | Published base-pay range | Additional compensation stated |
|---|---|---|
| Forward Deployed Engineer, Seattle | $185,000–$300,000 | Equity and possible performance-related bonuses |
| Forward Deployed Software Engineer, San Francisco | $185,000–$325,000 | Equity |
| Government Forward Deployed Engineer | $145,800–$280,000 | Equity |
These ranges are not directly interchangeable: they cover different openings and locations, and a base-pay range is not total compensation. The Seattle listing says pay can vary with market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. When evaluating an offer, compare base pay separately from equity, bonuses, benefits, location, and seniority; the listed figures do not establish what an individual candidate will receive.

Read beyond the title and assess the actual work and employment terms. These distinctions help identify whether an opening fits your experience and expectations:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Engineering ownership: How much production coding, architecture, and implementation does the role own, compared with scoping or advising?
- Customer engagement: Does the engineer work closely or embed with customer users and technical teams?
- Deployment lifecycle: Is ownership limited to discovery and a prototype, or does it extend through production rollout, adoption, and handoff?
- Domain and environment: Is the work general enterprise deployment, or does it require familiarity with a specific sector, its systems, and its operating constraints?
- Working conditions: Check the specific posting for location, hybrid expectations, travel, and relocation terms. The Seattle listing, for example, specifies hybrid work and travel expectations; those terms are specific to that job and can change.
- Compensation basis: Separate base salary from equity, bonuses, benefits, and any location or seniority differences.
