Forward collision warning (FCW) is a driver-assistance feature that detects a possible crash with a vehicle ahead and alerts the driver. It warns; it does not, by itself, steer or brake to avoid the crash. The driver must respond.
What does forward collision warning mean?
FCW monitors factors such as your vehicle’s speed, the speed of a vehicle ahead, and the distance between them. Using sensors, it looks for slower-moving or stationary vehicles and warns when it detects a potential forward collision. Depending on the vehicle, the alert may be visual, audible, or another signal. Exact detection abilities and limits vary by make and model.
As the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains, “It’s important to note that forward collision warning systems only provide a warning to the driver and do not take action to avoid a crash.”

Not on its own. FCW alerts the driver, who can brake or take evasive action. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is a separate function that can apply the brakes when a forward collision is imminent. A vehicle may have FCW, AEB, or both; the presence of FCW alone does not mean the car will brake automatically.

How well does FCW work?
Results depend on the system and the circumstances, so study findings should not be treated as a guarantee for an individual driver or vehicle.
- An IIHS summary published in 2017 reports an observational study of police-reported crash involvement rates per insured vehicle year across 22 U.S. states during 2010–2014. Rear-end striking crash involvement rates were lower by 27% for FCW alone, 43% for low-speed AEB, and 50% for FCW combined with AEB.
- Those percentages describe the systems and vehicles studied in that historical period. They are not a prediction of how much a current FCW system will reduce crash risk for a particular car.
A separate 2024 IIHS and Transport Canada research record describes tests of five model year 2021–2022 vehicles. Researchers tested 12 nonpassenger and seven passenger vehicle or surrogate targets, with the test vehicles approaching stationary targets at 50, 60, or 70 km/h. They recorded whether FCW activated and its time-to-collision. This test setup illustrates that results depend on the target and test conditions; it does not establish a universal performance ranking.

What are FCW’s limitations?
FCW is an aid, not a substitute for attention or a promise that a crash will be prevented. Systems can miss a warning or issue one unnecessarily, and their operating conditions and available settings differ by vehicle.
For example, a Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual filed with NHTSA describes model-specific FCW settings and limitations, including possible unnecessary or missed warnings. These details apply to that vehicle and manual, not to every car. Check your own vehicle’s owner’s manual for its alerts, settings, and operating limits.
