Fortytwo has launched Fortytwo Engine, an inference API that coordinates multiple AI models during generation. In the company’s 450-run DeepSWE evaluation, Engine used 24.7% fewer tokens than the same Qwen 3.8 27B model running alone, while the score rose from 42.2 to 47.8. The result is promising but company-reported, limited to that evaluation setup, and not a guarantee for every workload.
What Fortytwo Engine does
Engine is a cooperative inference layer for open-weight models. Its first supported model is Qwen 3.8 27B. Fortytwo calls the coordination mechanism the Swarm Decoder: participating model instances assess one another while a response is being generated, rather than producing isolated answers and comparing them only after completion.
That timing is the key architectural change. Fortytwo’s earlier 2025 swarm approach generated separate responses, compared their contributions after generation and selected stronger material. Engine moves peer ranking into the reasoning trajectory itself, with the aim of detecting weak assumptions before they trigger more generation, retries or tool calls. Fortytwo says its token accounting includes all participating models, not just the final response.

What the 24.7% token figure means
Fortytwo reports results from 450 DeepSWE software-engineering task runs. Engine averaged 12.3 million tokens per run, compared with 16.3 million for the same base model operating alone. Across all runs, that was 5.6 billion tokens versus 7.4 billion.

The reported reduction is calculated from the DeepSWE runs and should be read as an evaluation-specific result, not as a universal 24.7% discount on token use. The published material does not provide independent replication or customer production measurements. Workloads with different prompts, context sizes, tool use, latency targets or model mixes could produce different results.

OpenAI API compatibility and limits
Fortytwo describes Engine’s developer interface as compatible with the OpenAI Chat Completions API. Documented capabilities include streaming responses, function tools, parallel tool calls, structured output and a reasoning-effort setting. Chat Completions and model listing are supported.
Compatibility does not extend to every OpenAI endpoint. The documented boundary excludes Responses, Embeddings, Audio, Files and Assistants. Some request fields are only partially supported or depend on the selected model, and unsupported fields return errors. Teams should inventory their actual requests, tool schemas and response parsing before switching an existing client.

A practical migration check
- List every endpoint your application calls; do not assume a Chat Completions integration also covers Responses or file workflows.
- Run representative prompts with streaming, structured output, function tools and parallel tool calls enabled if your application uses them.
- Check model-listing responses and confirm that your requested model is available before sending production traffic.
- Test error handling for unsupported fields and model-dependent options.
- Compare completed-task tokens, retries, tool calls, latency and success rate rather than measuring raw output length alone.
Private deployment with Fortytwo Harbor
Fortytwo Harbor is the company’s self-managed option for organizations that want swarm inference inside their own infrastructure. Fortytwo positions Harbor around keeping data within the organization’s perimeter and replacing per-token API billing with a fixed hardware-cost model.
The trade-off is operational responsibility: a private deployment requires suitable hardware, capacity planning, model serving and ongoing maintenance. The available launch information does not state a standard hardware configuration, deployment price or performance target, so those details must be confirmed directly for a specific environment.

How Engine compares with a conventional single-model API
A single-model API is simpler to reason about because one model produces the trajectory and billing is generally tied to that request. Engine adds coordination overhead and potentially more model activity, but Fortytwo’s DeepSWE result suggests that earlier correction can reduce total tokens needed to finish difficult coding tasks.

Company context and what comes next
Unite.AI reports that Fortytwo was founded in 2024, has 15 engineers in Mountain View and Abu Dhabi, raised $2.3 million in pre-seed funding in 2025 and joined Abu Dhabi’s Hub71 ecosystem in 2026. Fortytwo says it plans to add more open models to Engine after Qwen 3.8 27B. These company details can change as the startup grows.

Fortytwo CEO and co-founder Ivan Nikitin summarized the product’s thesis as: “Collective reasoning pays off twice: the answers are better, and tasks take fewer tokens.” The benchmark data supports that direction in the reported DeepSWE test, while broader production evidence is still needed.
Who should evaluate Engine now?
- Software teams with expensive, multi-step coding tasks: measure completed-task tokens and success against your current model.
- Existing OpenAI-compatible applications: start with Chat Completions and verify every field and tool behavior.
- Organizations with strict data boundaries: investigate Harbor’s hardware, capacity and support requirements.
- Teams seeking a guaranteed 24.7% reduction: wait for workload-specific measurements; Fortytwo does not establish that guarantee.
