Fortytwo Engine APIs authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID bearer tokens. Most 401 responses come from a wrong tenant, audience, scope, expiry, credential, or clock; most 403 responses mean the token is valid but lacks the endpoint’s application role or consent. Rate-limit responses require controlled retries because Fortytwo’s public Engine documentation does not publish a quota or reset schedule.
The reliable fix is to request the documented API scope, send the token to the exact api.fortytwo.io route with the correct method, verify the token claims and route-specific role, then apply bounded backoff and useful request logging when throttling occurs.
What a Fortytwo Engine error is telling you
Authentication and authorization fail at different stages. Treating every error as “the token is bad” often sends troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Response | What it usually means | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | The service could not accept the presented bearer token. | Authorization header format, issuer and tenant, audience, scope, expiry, credentials, consent, and host clock. |
| 403 Forbidden | The token was accepted, but the caller is not authorized for that operation. | Application role, role claim, admin consent, route prefix, HTTP method, and whether that operation supports application permissions. |
| 429 or another throttling response | The service is limiting request volume or concurrency. | Response headers, Retry-After, burst behavior, concurrency, retry policy, and request correlation data. |
A valid access token proves authentication only. It does not prove that the caller can read or write every Fortytwo resource.

Use the documented Entra ID audience and scope
Fortytwo states that its API endpoints are authenticated through the customer’s own Entra ID tenant using the multitenant Fortytwo Universe application. For OAuth client-credential or delegated-token requests, use the scope https://api.fortytwo.io/.default. Fortytwo also identifies the API resource/application as 2808f963-7bba-4e66-9eee-82d0b178f408; that identifier appears in the consent and resource configuration flow.
Do not substitute a Microsoft Graph scope, a URL for a different environment, or a guessed Fortytwo product scope. A token issued for another audience can be perfectly valid and still be rejected by the Engine API.
Choose the identity that matches the workload
| Identity | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Delegated user | Interactive administration, development, or a tool acting for a signed-in operator. | The user’s tenant, interactive consent, delegated permissions, and token lifetime. |
| Service principal | Scheduled jobs, CI/CD, server applications, and unattended integrations. | Client ID, secret or certificate validity, tenant, application permissions, and admin consent. |
| Managed identity | Workloads hosted on an Azure resource that can obtain tokens without storing a secret. | Identity assignment, tenant context, requested audience, and the endpoint’s support for application permissions. |
Fortytwo documents users, agents, service principals, and managed identities as supported identity types. The endpoint still determines which permission model is usable, so do not assume that because one route accepts an application token every route will.

Acquire a token correctly
Interactive PowerShell example
Fortytwo recommends the EntraIDAccessToken PowerShell module. Its documented pattern creates an interactive user profile for the Fortytwo scope and then produces an authorization header:
Add-EntraIDInteractiveUserAccessTokenProfile `
-Scope https://api.fortytwo.io/.default `
-ClientId 68bf2f1d-b9e1-4477-8b90-81314861f05f
Get-EntraIDAccessTokenHeader
Use the resulting header in the API request rather than copying a token into source code. The client ID in this example is the documented Fortytwo application identifier for the interactive profile; use the client registration intended for your tenant and workload when your setup differs.
Unattended service-to-service flow
- Create or select the Entra application or managed identity that will call the API.
- Configure the Fortytwo API permission for the application and grant tenant-wide administrator consent when required.
- Acquire a token for
https://api.fortytwo.io/.defaultusing the client-credential or managed-identity mechanism provided by your identity platform. - Keep the access token in memory only as long as practical. Never place it in a source repository, issue tracker, shell history, or ordinary application log.
- Send it as
Authorization: Bearer <access-token>to the exact Fortytwo route.
If the identity provider returns a token but the API responds with 401, inspect the token itself and the request host before changing application roles. Token issuance success does not prove that the token is intended for Fortytwo.

Verify token claims without exposing the secret
Decode a token locally for inspection, but do not print the complete JWT or paste it into a ticket. Inspect only the claims and redact the signature and token value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Issuer (
iss): confirms that the token came from the expected Entra tenant or authority. - Tenant (
tid): confirms that the issuing tenant is the one authorized for your Fortytwo arrangement. - Audience (
aud): must identify the Fortytwo API, not an unrelated Microsoft service. - Expiry and validity (
exp, nbf): show whether the token is currently usable. - Application roles (
roles): are important for app-only calls. A missing role commonly explains a 403. - Delegated scopes (
scp): appear in user-delegated tokens and must match the delegated permission expected by the operation.
Compare the token’s timestamps with the host clock. A machine that is materially ahead or behind can make a newly issued token appear not yet valid or already expired. Use synchronized system time on the host that obtains and sends the token.
Send the request to the exact route
Even a correctly issued token fails if the request is sent to the wrong host, path, or method. Build the request from the current Fortytwo route documentation rather than concatenating a route prefix from memory.
- Use the
api.fortytwo.iohost intended for your API environment. - Preserve the documented route prefix, including any
/betasegment. - Use the HTTP method shown for that operation. A read endpoint and a write endpoint may require different roles and payloads.
- Send the bearer token in the
Authorizationheader, not as a query-string parameter. - Set
Content-Type: application/jsonfor JSON request bodies and validate the body against the route’s schema. - Record the status, response headers, and server correlation information without recording the token or other secrets.
Success on one Fortytwo route does not establish permission for another route family. Route and role checks are per operation.
Fixing 401 Unauthorized responses
Work through these checks in order. Changing roles or retrying rapidly will not repair a token that is aimed at the wrong audience.

2. Check tenant and client identity
Confirm that the token was issued by the intended tenant and that the client ID belongs to the application you configured. For service principals, check that the secret or certificate is current and that the certificate chain and private-key permissions are correct. For interactive users, sign in to the intended account rather than relying on a cached session from another directory.
3. Check the audience and requested scope
Inspect aud and confirm that the token targets Fortytwo. If the token was requested for another resource, obtain a new token with Fortytwo’s documented scope. Reusing a token from a different API is a common cause of a persistent 401.
4. Check expiry, not-before time, and clock skew
Discard expired tokens and refresh them before the next call. Verify that the host clock is synchronized. A token can be valid according to Entra ID but rejected by the API when the calling machine’s clock is outside an acceptable tolerance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →5. Check consent and credentials
Verify that the tenant administrator has granted the required consent and that the application is enabled. Fortytwo’s getting-started guidance requires admin consent for Identity Universe. If consent was granted for a different tenant or application, repeat the consent process for the actual caller.
6. Remove accidental token handling errors
Do not include the word Bearer twice, trim the token, or send a token from a previous environment. Ensure that middleware is not replacing the Authorization header with a stale value after your code sets it.
Fixing 403 Forbidden responses
A 403 should move the investigation from token validity to authorization. Fortytwo’s troubleshooting guidance specifically warns that a valid access token does not prove authorization for the requested endpoint.

Verify the application role
For app-only calls, inspect the token’s roles claim and compare it with the role required by the operation. Granting a broad permission in an app registration does not help if administrator consent has not been applied to the tenant, or if the token was issued before the role change. Obtain a fresh token after consent or permission changes.
Check collection route permissions
Fortytwo’s collections documentation names these application permissions:
| Permission | Use | Route family to verify |
|---|---|---|
collections-criteria.criteria.read.all |
Read access to collection criteria. | /collections-criteria/beta |
collections-criteria.criteria.readwrite.all |
Write access to collection criteria. | /collections-criteria/beta |
| Other collection permissions | Not stated in the public material used here. | Verify in the documentation for the exact operation. |
Fortytwo separates /collections/beta, /collections-criteria/beta, and /collections-joinable/beta. A role that permits one prefix does not automatically authorize the others. Confirm both the path and the operation-specific permission.
Check the HTTP method and operation model
A read role will not authorize a write method. Conversely, changing a request from POST to GET merely to avoid a 403 can produce an invalid or misleading call. Match the method, body, and required role as a set.
Confirm application-permission support
Some operations may require delegated user context rather than an app-only token. If the token contains application roles but the endpoint expects a signed-in user, use the documented delegated flow or confirm with Fortytwo which permission type is supported. Do not infer support from another endpoint’s behavior.
Handling rate-limit and throttling errors
Fortytwo’s public material confirms that rate-limiting policies exist in its External ID API-partner offering, but it does not publish Fortytwo Engine quota values, reset windows, or a guaranteed Retry-After contract. Any numeric limit found in an unofficial example should therefore be treated as unverified.

Read the response before retrying
On a throttling response, capture the HTTP status, response body, timestamp, response headers, request or correlation ID, and the route and method. If the service supplies Retry-After, wait at least the indicated duration before attempting that request again. Honor either the number of seconds or the HTTP-date form supported by your HTTP client.
Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter
When no retry duration is supplied, use a client-side policy such as:
delay = random(0, min(maxDelay, baseDelay * 2^attempt))
Set a maximum retry count and a maximum total retry time appropriate to the job. Jitter prevents many workers that failed together from retrying in the same millisecond. When the bound is reached, return an actionable error to the caller or queue the work for operator review.

- Place calls in a queue and release them at a controlled rate instead of launching an unbounded loop.
- Cap concurrent requests per process and, where applicable, across all worker instances.
- Reuse a valid token until it is near expiry rather than requesting a new token for every API call.
- Do not immediately replay an identical failed request. Repeated unsuccessful calls can prolong throttling and multiply the load.
- For writes, use the API’s documented idempotency or deduplication mechanism if one exists; otherwise design the queue so a retry cannot silently create duplicate work.
These measures improve client reliability; they are not Fortytwo quota guarantees.
A minimal diagnostic sequence
Use this sequence when an integration is failing and you need evidence that another engineer can act on.
- Confirm the base URL and route prefix. Check the host, beta segment, resource path, and HTTP method against the current endpoint documentation.
- Inspect the token locally. Verify issuer, audience, tenant, expiry, validity window, and role or scope claims without printing the token.
- Confirm the requested scope. The token request must target Fortytwo’s documented
.defaultscope, not another API. - Confirm consent and endpoint role. Check administrator consent, the application role assigned to the caller, and whether the operation accepts application permissions.
- Validate the request. Check the Authorization header, method, content type, JSON body, and required parameters.
- Capture failure evidence. Save status, sanitized response body, headers, timestamp, route, method, tenant identifier, and correlation information. Exclude access tokens, secrets, and private keys.
- Apply the correct branch. Repair identity and token claims for 401, repair roles and route authorization for 403, and stop bursts with bounded backoff for throttling.
Operational safeguards for production clients
Keep secrets and tokens out of logs
Fortytwo explicitly advises not logging access tokens, client secrets, or private-key material while troubleshooting. Redact Authorization headers at the HTTP-client, reverse-proxy, and observability layers. Treat decoded claims as sensitive as well; tenant IDs, client IDs, and role names can still reveal deployment details.
Make failures observable without making them dangerous
Log a stable request or correlation ID, timestamp, route template, method, status, retry attempt, and sanitized error code. Store the tenant and client identifiers only where your security policy permits. A support bundle should allow the failing call to be located without containing a credential that can be replayed.
Refresh permissions deliberately
After changing an application role or granting admin consent, acquire a new token. Existing access tokens generally retain the claims with which they were issued, so testing with an old token can make a correct configuration appear broken.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right remediation
| Failure class | Preferred remediation | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| 401 token rejected | Reissue the token for the Fortytwo audience, then verify tenant, expiry, credentials, consent, and clock. | Adding roles before proving that the token targets the right API. |
| 403 authorization denied | Inspect route, method, application role, role claim, consent, and permission model. | Assuming a valid token grants access to every route. |
| Throttling | Honor Retry-After when present; otherwise use bounded exponential backoff, jitter, queues, and concurrency caps. |
Infinite retries, synchronized worker retries, or assuming an unofficial numeric quota. |
| Unclear or persistent failure | Provide sanitized status, body, headers, timestamp, route, method, tenant context, and correlation data to the operator or Fortytwo support channel. | Sending tokens, secrets, or private keys with the diagnostic report. |
Final checklist
- The token comes from the intended Entra tenant and identity.
- The requested audience is Fortytwo and the scope is
https://api.fortytwo.io/.default. - The token is within its validity window and the host clock is synchronized.
- The request uses the exact
api.fortytwo.ioroute, prefix, method, and body. - A 403 investigation includes the endpoint-specific role, consent, role claim, and application-permission support.
- Collection calls distinguish among
/collections/beta,/collections-criteria/beta, and/collections-joinable/beta. - Throttled calls honor
Retry-Afteror use bounded jittered backoff, with a queue and concurrency cap for bursts. - Logs contain correlation evidence but never access tokens, client secrets, or private keys.
