Fortnite Sidekicks are cosmetic companions, not combat equipment. They follow your character, react to what happens around you, and can be addressed with Sidekick Emotes. Epic Games says they provide no gameplay advantage and do not take damage, so they cannot improve your combat power, survivability, movement, loot, or competitive statistics.
What Fortnite Sidekicks are
Epic describes Sidekicks as “friendly cosmetics that stay by your side.” In a match or supported experience, a Sidekick appears as a companion associated with your character. Its behavior is expressive rather than tactical: it can react to the surrounding world and respond when you use a Sidekick Emote.
That makes a Sidekick different from a weapon, item, hireable character, or gameplay pet. It is an animated cosmetic with social and visual functions. The companion does not become a second playable unit, and you do not issue it combat orders.

What Sidekicks can do
- Stay with your character as you move through supported Fortnite experiences.
- React to events and objects in the environment.
- Respond to Sidekick Emotes, giving you a way to address or play with the companion.
- Use a selected appearance, name, and eligible accessories so the companion feels personalized.
What Sidekicks cannot do
- Attack opponents or deal damage.
- Defend you, block shots, or provide a shield.
- Reveal enemies, mark locations, or scout areas for you.
- Carry items, collect loot, or change your inventory.
- Increase health, movement speed, accuracy, damage, or any other player statistic.
Epic’s rule is explicit: “Sidekicks do not provide any gameplay advantage and don’t take damage.” Treat any apparent interaction with bullets, explosions, storms, or other hazards as visual behavior rather than a damage system.

Do Sidekicks give you an advantage?
No. A Sidekick does not improve your chance of winning or alter the rules of a match. It cannot make your character harder to hit, increase the value of loot, improve a weapon, or affect matchmaking and competitive statistics.
This distinction matters because a companion moving beside you can look like an AI teammate or a tactical pet. It is neither. Your opponent does not have to eliminate it, and you do not have to protect it. Combat outcomes still depend on your character, equipment, positioning, decisions, and the rules of the mode you are playing.
Why a cosmetic can still matter socially
“No gameplay advantage” does not mean “no visible effect.” Other players can see the companion in situations where cosmetics are displayed, and your Sidekick can react to the environment or to your emotes. Those reactions can make a lobby, traversal sequence, or casual session more expressive. They do not translate into a combat bonus.
Can a Sidekick attack or take damage?
No. Sidekicks are not attack companions, bodyguards, or AI teammates. They cannot target an enemy, fire a weapon, revive you, or perform an action that changes another player’s health.

They also do not have a damage or elimination state. Epic says they do not take damage, so shooting, explosions, environmental hazards, and ordinary combat events should not be treated as ways to remove or weaken one. If a Sidekick appears to react to a dangerous event, that is an animation or cosmetic response.
Where Sidekicks work
Epic lists Sidekick support for several Fortnite experiences, but visibility can differ by mode and by the settings of a developer-made island.

Epic’s UEFN documentation describes Sidekicks as non-player characters for creature-based games and notes that a player’s own Sidekick can be brought into an island when the feature is enabled. Therefore, a Sidekick missing from a particular island does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account or locker.

There is no single permanent unlock path. Epic has used Battle Pass rewards, Item Shop releases, ownership grants, and promotional offers. Availability and dates can change, so treat old launch announcements as historical records rather than a promise that an item is currently obtainable.

Battle Pass rewards
Epic’s October 30, 2025 announcement said the first Sidekick, Peels, would unlock in the Battle Pass beginning November 1, 2025. A Battle Pass reward normally requires progressing through the relevant pass under its stated rules. Because that date has passed, check the current Battle Pass and your account’s available rewards before assuming Peels is still claimable.
Item Shop releases
The same announcement listed Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor for the Item Shop on November 7, 2025. That was a dated shop announcement, not a guarantee of permanent stock or a stated recurring schedule. If you want one of these Sidekicks now, use the current in-game Shop listing as the authority on whether it is available and what the current offer requires.
Ownership grants
Players who owned the Bonesy Back Bling were announced to receive the Bonesy Sidekick as a grant. An ownership grant is tied to the qualifying cosmetic or account condition described by Epic; it is not the same as a general free unlock for every player.
Cross-promotion offers
Epic says the Super Meat Boy Sidekick is granted in-game to qualifying purchasers of Super Meat Boy 3D beginning March 31, 2026. The promotion also says the cosmetic may become purchasable in the Fortnite Shop later. If the qualifying purchase is refunded, Epic says the granted Sidekick is removed. Confirm the promotion’s live terms and regional eligibility before buying anything, because an announcement date does not establish current availability.

Checking your own account
- Open Fortnite and go to your Locker or the Sidekick section of your cosmetics, depending on the current interface labels.
- Review the Sidekicks shown as owned, selectable, or available through a current offer.
- For a Battle Pass, Shop, or promotion route, read the item or offer details for the current date, platform, region, and qualifying conditions.
- If an ownership grant is missing, confirm that you own the qualifying item on the same Epic account and restart the game so entitlement information can refresh.
How to customize a Sidekick
Customization is deliberately limited. Epic’s support instructions say a Sidekick’s appearance can be customized one time after you obtain it, and not every Sidekick is customizable. The most important step is the final lock-in: after you hold LOCK-IN, the appearance choices are permanent.
Customization process
- Equip the Sidekick from your Locker or Sidekick management screen.
- Open its appearance or design option. If no appearance option is offered, that Sidekick may not be customizable.
- Choose the available physical traits and any eligible visual options shown by the interface.
- Select a name, or use the randomize option if you do not want to choose one manually.
- Review the design carefully, then hold LOCK-IN when you are certain.
- After confirmation, use the separate name or accessory controls when Epic allows them; do not assume that physical traits can be redesigned.
What is permanent and what can change

Because the rules vary by Sidekick, read the options presented for the specific companion before confirming. The absence of an edit control is meaningful: it can indicate that the item is not customizable or that a one-time appearance choice has already been locked.
Comparing Sidekicks without treating them like gear
Since every Sidekick is governed by the same no-advantage rule, combat effectiveness is not a valid comparison category. Use acquisition, personalization, and visibility instead.

Troubleshooting common Sidekick questions
“My Sidekick is not following me.”
First check the experience. Fortnite Festival keeps Sidekicks backstage, and a developer-made island may have Sidekicks disabled. If the mode supports them, verify that the Sidekick is equipped rather than merely owned, then return to the lobby and re-enter the experience.

“I cannot find the appearance editor.”
Not every Sidekick is customizable. If the editor was available previously, check whether you already completed the one-time lock-in. A confirmed physical design cannot be freely reset.
“The Sidekick disappeared after a purchase refund.”
For the Super Meat Boy promotion, Epic specifically says refunding the qualifying purchase removes the granted Sidekick. Other grants can have their own entitlement rules, so check the offer terms instead of assuming every cosmetic is permanent after a refund.
“Can I use it to distract enemies or reveal players?”
You can use its visible reactions and emotes for expression, but Epic does not define a Sidekick as a scouting or distraction tool. It provides no enemy detection, targeting, or tactical benefit.
