For a PC that prioritizes smooth Fortnite performance, start with Performance rendering mode, restart the game, use Fullscreen, turn VSync Off, enable NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency: On + Boost when available, disable ray tracing and other expensive effects, and use a frame-rate cap your system can hold consistently. If you are diagnosing instability, switch the quality preset to Low and set 3D Resolution to 100%.

An SSD can shorten loading and reduce hitching, but it is not a guaranteed average-FPS upgrade. A 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or faster gaming monitor improves motion clarity and perceived responsiveness only when your PC can render frames at a comparable sustained rate.

The recommended Fortnite performance profile

The settings below are a practical starting point for competitive play or any system that is missing its target frame rate. They follow current guidance from Epic Games and NVIDIA, but hardware differences mean there is no universal best profile.

Setting Starting value What it changes
Rendering Mode Performance Reduces graphical fidelity and memory use to lighten CPU and GPU work; Epic says enabling it may increase FPS.
Window Mode Fullscreen Epic’s 2026 competitive guidance identifies fullscreen as the lower-latency choice.
VSync Off Avoids the synchronization delay associated with waiting for the display; adaptive-sync hardware can be used if tearing is distracting.
NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency On + Boost, when supported Coordinates rendering work through the game engine to reduce system latency.
Ray tracing and costly effects Off Returns GPU time to frame rendering instead of expensive lighting and effects.
Quality preset Low while troubleshooting Creates a clear baseline for separating settings problems from hardware limits.
3D Resolution 100% for diagnosis Keeps the internal render scale predictable while you isolate other causes.
Frame-rate limit A cap your system sustains consistently Prevents an unstable peak-FPS target from creating uneven frame times.

Epic describes the Performance setting as a possible FPS increase rather than a guaranteed number. The result depends on your processor, graphics card, memory, drivers, and the current Fortnite build.

Why FPS and input lag are connected

Frame rate is only part of smoothness

Higher FPS gives the display more frequent frame updates, but inconsistent frame times can feel worse than a lower, steady rate. A system that swings between 180 and 70 FPS may feel less responsive than one that holds 120 FPS. For that reason, judge a change by average FPS together with 1% lows or frame-time consistency.

Where input lag comes from

Input latency is the time from a mouse or controller action to the resulting image. The input device, game simulation, render queue, GPU, display scanout, and monitor response all contribute. VSync can add waiting when frames are synchronized to the display; fullscreen, a sensible frame cap, and Reflex are intended to reduce avoidable queueing. Reflex does not create extra FPS. NVIDIA explains that its Reflex Low Latency SDK helps the game engine submit rendering work efficiently to the GPU, reducing system latency and improving responsiveness.

Your hardware sets the ceiling

Epic’s support documentation states that the Fortnite experience is entirely dependent on the hardware in use. A setting that helps a graphics-limited desktop can have little effect on a processor-limited laptop. Treat every recommendation as a controlled starting point, then verify the result on your own system.

How to apply the low-latency settings

  1. Switch to Performance rendering. Open Fortnite’s Settings, select the Video tab, choose Rendering Mode, select Performance, apply the change, and restart Fortnite. The restart is part of Epic’s current support flow.
  2. Choose fullscreen. In the Video settings, set Window Mode to Fullscreen. This is the mode Epic lists for minimizing input lag in its 2026 competitive guidance.
  3. Disable synchronization when latency is the priority. Set VSync to Off. If your monitor supports adaptive synchronization and tearing is unacceptable, use that display feature rather than re-enabling VSync automatically; check the monitor and graphics-driver documentation for its exact toggle.
  4. Enable Reflex where the option appears. Set NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency to On + Boost on supported NVIDIA hardware. If Fortnite does not show the option, do not substitute an invented setting; continue with fullscreen, VSync, effects, and frame-cap adjustments.
  5. Remove expensive visual work. Turn off ray tracing and other costly effects. Epic characterizes ray tracing as computationally expensive and counterproductive when the goal is high FPS and minimal latency.
  6. Establish a diagnostic baseline. Set the quality preset to Low and leave 3D Resolution at 100%. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem is caused by a particular effect, render scale, driver, or hardware limit. Once the system is stable, raise individual quality options one at a time.
  7. Set a sustainable frame cap. Choose the highest limit your CPU and GPU can maintain consistently in the matches and scenes you actually play. There is no single correct cap for every monitor or PC. A stable cap usually produces more predictable frame times than an uncapped rate that repeatedly hits a thermal or power limit.
  8. Apply platform fixes before judging the result. Update the graphics driver and verify that Fortnite uses the dedicated or high-performance GPU on a laptop or multi-GPU computer. A game accidentally running on an integrated GPU can make in-game tuning appear ineffective.

Performance Mode versus DirectX 12

Performance Mode is the clearest first test for a low-end or FPS-limited PC because it lowers graphical fidelity and memory pressure. DirectX 12 can be preferable on stronger hardware when its image quality and frame pacing suit your system, but Epic cautions that the outcome depends on the hardware and may improve only slightly or not at all.

Comparison point Performance Mode DirectX 12
Average FPS Often the first mode to test when the system is constrained; Epic presents it as a possible FPS increase. Can be competitive on stronger hardware; no universal FPS advantage is established.
Frame-time stability and 1% lows Lower visual and memory load can help a limited system, but the result still depends on the PC. May be smoother or less smooth depending on drivers, hardware, and the current game build.
Visual fidelity Lower fidelity by design. Retains the richer rendering path available to the selected quality settings.
Shader or traversal stutter Can reduce the amount of work on constrained systems; it is not a promise of zero stutter. Shader compilation and traversal behavior can vary by hardware and update, so test for hitching in real matches.
CPU and GPU utilization Reduces graphical and memory demands, potentially exposing a CPU limit at very high FPS. Uses the more advanced rendering path and may shift the workload between CPU and GPU.

To compare the modes fairly, change only the rendering mode, restart as required, and play the same type of match or training route. Record average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time graphs, visible hitching, image quality, and how immediate controls feel. Keep the mode that delivers the best combination for your hardware rather than choosing by reputation.

What an SSD and system memory can—and cannot—fix

SSD benefits

Epic support documents that older machines may fit Fortnite in memory better and reduce hitches or stutters when the game runs from an SSD. Epic’s competitive guidance also says that installing Fortnite and the operating system on an SSD increases read and write speed and reduces loading time. These are meaningful benefits for startup, level transitions, asset streaming, and hitching, but an SSD is not a universal average-FPS fix once the game is running.

If Fortnite is on a slow hard drive, move both the game and, where practical, the operating system to an SSD with enough free capacity for updates. When choosing between SSDs, compare capacity, interface, endurance or warranty, and sustained performance. The available guidance supports the use case, not a particular model.

Memory and optional texture removal

Epic notes that older systems with at least 6 GB of RAM may fit Fortnite in memory better than systems below that level. More memory does not automatically raise FPS, but insufficient memory can increase paging and hitching. Close unnecessary applications and check memory usage while Fortnite is running.

Performance Mode also offers an optional removal of high-resolution textures. Epic’s current support documentation says the removable package is over 15 GB; the exact space saved varies by build and platform. Removing those textures can reduce storage use and avoid loading assets you do not need, at the cost of high-resolution texture detail.

Choosing a monitor for lower perceived latency

Epic recommends gaming monitors with refresh rates of 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher. A higher refresh rate displays new frames more often and can make camera movement and aiming appear clearer. It cannot manufacture frames that the PC does not render: a 144 Hz panel receiving a sustained 70 FPS signal cannot provide the same motion cadence as one receiving 144 FPS.

Monitor factor What to match to your Fortnite setup
Refresh rate Choose 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or faster when the PC can sustain a comparable frame rate.
Response time Use a display with a measured response appropriate to its refresh rate; overly slow transitions can add visible blur even when FPS is high.
Variable-refresh support Adaptive synchronization can reduce tearing when frame rate varies; configure it according to the monitor and GPU instructions.
Resolution Higher resolution increases rendering work. Select a resolution your GPU can sustain at the target frame rate.
PC frame rate Base the purchase on the rate your system holds in actual matches, not a brief menu or benchmark peak.

For a competitive player whose current PC already holds around 120 to 144 FPS, a 144Hz gaming monitor can reveal the benefit of those frames. If the PC is far below that range, stabilizing the game and upgrading the graphics or processor may be a better first step.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Low FPS everywhere

  • Confirm Performance rendering mode is active after the required restart.
  • Use Low quality, 100% 3D Resolution, fullscreen, and disabled ray tracing.
  • Check that Fortnite is using the dedicated or high-performance GPU.
  • Update the graphics driver and retest with a sustainable frame cap.

Short freezes or traversal hitches

  • Move Fortnite and the operating system to an SSD if they are on a mechanical drive.
  • Check whether the machine has at least 6 GB of RAM and whether other programs are consuming memory.
  • Test Performance Mode and DirectX 12 separately; keep the mode with steadier frame times in the same route.
  • Consider removing the high-resolution texture package when storage pressure or asset streaming is a concern.

Controls feel delayed despite high FPS

  • Use fullscreen, VSync Off, and Reflex On + Boost where supported.
  • Lower an unstable frame-rate limit to a value the system can hold.
  • Check the monitor’s refresh-rate setting in the operating system and confirm that the display is connected to the intended GPU.
  • Compare responsiveness in the same match conditions rather than relying on the lobby or loading screen.

Tearing after turning VSync off

Tearing is the visual trade-off of presenting frames without synchronizing them to the display. If it is unacceptable, enable the monitor’s adaptive-sync feature and follow its configuration guidance. Re-enable conventional VSync only if the visual benefit outweighs the additional latency for your use case.

A repeatable way to test every change

  1. Record your current settings, average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time graph, monitor refresh rate, and whether the problem is low FPS, hitching, or delayed input.
  2. Use one repeatable scenario: the same creative route, replay segment, or comparable match conditions. Avoid comparing a quiet lobby with a crowded endgame.
  3. Change one setting or one group that has a single purpose, then restart Fortnite whenever the rendering-mode workflow requires it.
  4. Play long enough to encounter the area or situation that normally exposes the problem. A short menu test cannot reveal traversal stutter or thermal throttling.
  5. Keep the change only when it improves the metric that matters to you without introducing unacceptable image-quality loss, tearing, or new hitching.

Fortnite updates can change menu labels, rendering implementations, and Reflex behavior. The guidance here reflects official Epic Games and NVIDIA information available on October 18, 2026; recheck the in-game labels after major updates.

Putting the upgrade decision in order

Start with software settings because they cost nothing: Performance Mode, fullscreen, VSync Off, Reflex where supported, disabled expensive effects, a Low-and-100%-resolution diagnostic baseline, and a sustainable cap. If the game still hitches, address the storage and memory conditions that affect loading and paging. Only then judge whether a 120 Hz or 144 Hz display can be fed by the frame rate your PC actually sustains. This order separates free latency improvements from hardware purchases and prevents a monitor or SSD from being treated as a guaranteed FPS solution.
