To improve Fortnite on Intel HD Graphics, identify the exact graphics model, check the PC against Epic’s current requirements, then test low graphics settings and Performance Mode. Update the right graphics driver and reduce background load before considering hardware changes. These steps can help, but no setting guarantees a particular frame rate: results depend on the processor, integrated graphics generation, memory, cooling, driver, game version, and resolution.
Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
“Intel HD Graphics” covers many different integrated GPUs, so the label alone cannot tell you how well Fortnite will run. In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters to find the graphics model. You can also open System Information to check your processor, installed memory, operating system, and other system details.
Epic’s PC requirements page currently lists Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 as minimum graphics options, alongside a Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz and 8 GB of RAM. It lists a GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU as recommended, along with 2 GB of video memory, a Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent processor, 16 GB of RAM, and an NVMe SSD. The listed operating systems are Windows 10 version 22H2 64-bit or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 64-bit at minimum, and Windows 10 or 11 64-bit as recommended. Requirements can change, so check Epic’s current PC requirements before relying on these specifications.
Meeting minimum requirements does not mean the game will run smoothly at high settings. Epic says systems at the minimum tier may need reduced graphics settings and fewer background applications. If your graphics model is below the listed baseline, settings changes may not be enough to make the experience satisfactory.

Establish a baseline before changing settings
Record the FPS you get in a repeatable location or match before tuning. Use Fortnite’s FPS display if available in your current game settings, and compare results under similar conditions: the same resolution, similar scene, and no major background task changes. Intel recommends measuring FPS before tuning because the result depends on the hardware configuration.
Change one setting at a time, then test again. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped, made the image too soft, or had no meaningful effect.
Update software and reduce background load
- Update Windows and Fortnite. Install available updates, then restart if requested.
- Update the correct Intel graphics driver. Use Intel’s driver support or follow the computer maker’s driver guidance, especially if the manufacturer provides a validated package for your model. A driver for another graphics generation may not be appropriate.
- Close unnecessary applications. Quit resource-heavy tasks you do not need while playing, including recording or capture utilities. Epic and Intel both recommend reducing background resource use.
Lower the settings that make the GPU work harder
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance starts with Quality Presets: Low and 3D Resolution: 100%, then recommends increasing settings gradually if performance improves. In Fortnite’s settings, open the video or graphics options, set the preset to Low, and test before changing other values.

- Intel Core i9 14th Gen 14900HX 1.6GHz Processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7, 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM
- 1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
- 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
- Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4

If FPS remains low, try reducing the display resolution or 3D resolution. A lower resolution means fewer pixels to render and can reduce graphics workload, but the image will look less sharp. Raise settings gradually only if the game remains responsive and visually acceptable. Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance has additional settings advice.
Try Fortnite Performance Mode
Performance Mode is Fortnite’s built-in option for low-FPS situations and less powerful PCs. It reduces visual quality aggressively in an effort to favor CPU and GPU performance, so expect a less detailed image; it may improve FPS, but it is not a guarantee and does not replace meeting the game’s minimum requirements.
- Open Fortnite’s Settings.
- Select the Video tab.
- Find Rendering Mode and choose Performance.
- Apply the change and restart Fortnite.
Epic says removing high-resolution textures can save over 15 GB of disk space. That figure is the space-saving claim on its dedicated Performance Mode support page, not a prediction of FPS improvement. See Epic’s Performance Mode instructions.

Check power settings and heat if performance falls over time
On Windows, a power slider set toward energy savings can slow games and graphics. Moving it toward performance may help, but on a laptop it can shorten battery runtime and may increase heat. Test while plugged in if that is how you normally play.

If Fortnite starts running worse after extended play, check for blocked vents, dust, and restricted airflow. Epic recommends improving airflow and clearing blocked vents when heat is an issue; cleaning is not a guaranteed FPS boost when the system is not overheating. Follow the computer maker’s safe maintenance instructions. Epic’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting page covers these checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When hardware changes might help
Consider upgrades only after the reversible checks, and verify compatibility with the exact computer model. Epic’s low-FPS guidance says an SSD or 6 GB or more of RAM can help older machines reduce hitches and stutters. That guidance does not establish that either upgrade raises average FPS. Epic’s published minimum is 8 GB of RAM, and its recommended specification is 16 GB; the 6 GB reference is not a replacement for the stated minimum.

| Option | Potential benefit supported by Epic’s guidance | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| SSD | May reduce hitches and stutters on older machines; no guaranteed average-FPS increase is established. | Check the exact model, form factor, connector, and available slot or bay. Epic’s recommended specification names NVMe, but an older PC may support a different storage interface. |
| Memory upgrade | May help if the PC is below requirements or constrained by memory; no universal FPS gain is established. | Confirm the memory type, maximum capacity, and whether memory is replaceable. These vary by computer. |
| Dedicated graphics card | Epic says a dedicated GPU can help balance system load and provide a smoother experience; it does not promise a specific FPS uplift. | For a desktop, check motherboard, case clearance, and power supply. Thin laptops and systems with soldered components may not support a practical upgrade. |
Epic’s recommended PC specification includes an NVMe SSD, but that does not mean every older computer accepts one. If the system still has a hard drive, storage may be relevant to hitching, while graphics settings are the more direct first step for testing low FPS. Read Epic’s low-FPS guidance alongside the requirements for the distinction.
Fix a specific Intel UHD window-mode crash
Intel documents a Fortnite crash that can occur when changing window mode on Intel UHD Graphics in Windows 10 or Windows 11. Its support article, last reviewed September 5, 2024, says driver version 31.0.101.2128 or later resolves the described issue for UHD graphics. Intel recommends updating Windows, performing a clean Intel graphics driver installation, and changing Fortnite’s window mode outside the game. Check the article and the driver available for your exact hardware before applying those steps: Intel’s UHD window-mode crash guidance.
