Treat a Fortinet credential-exposure warning as a reason to contain access and investigate—not as proof that every FortiGate is compromised. Prioritize active sessions and credentials first, then internet management, supported firmware, configuration checks, and log review.
What the credential-exposure warning does—and does not—mean
Fortinet’s June 19, 2026 analysis described credential-harvesting and brute-force activity aimed at devices with weak password hygiene and no multi-factor authentication (MFA). Fortinet said the activity was not a newly disclosed vulnerability and was not related to a recent incident or advisory. CISA’s June 2026 alert associated approximately 74,000 Fortinet devices with exposed credentials; that advisory-reported estimate does not establish that every device was accessed or compromised.
As Fortinet’s Carl Windsor wrote in the June 19 analysis, “This is not a new Fortinet vulnerability, and this activity is not related to any recent incident or advisory.” That distinction matters: exposed or reused credentials can enable access without a new software flaw, while a campaign-level estimate is not an incident finding for an individual appliance. See Fortinet’s campaign analysis and CISA’s alert.
1. Cut off active access and reset credentials
Start with internet-facing devices and terminate active administrative and SSL-VPN sessions. Reset all Fortinet administrator and VPN passwords, including accounts that may not appear directly in the exposure report. Use new, unique passwords; do not recycle a password that was exposed or used previously. Then enforce MFA for administrator and VPN accounts. Fortinet and CISA both recommend these containment measures.

2. Remove public management exposure where possible
Publicly reachable management gives an attacker a direct route to the administrative interface. Fortinet identifies removing internet-facing administration as the strongest of its cited access-control options. If operations require remote administration, limit it to trusted source addresses or use a local-in policy, then verify that the intended restriction is actually in effect.
| Management approach | Security distinction | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Remove internet-facing administration | Eliminates public access to the management interface. | Fortinet describes this as the strongest option among the controls discussed; ensure administrators retain a supported management route. |
| Restrict with trusted hosts | Allows administration only from specified trusted source addresses. | Check that the permitted addresses are current and controlled, and confirm other sources are denied. |
| Apply a local-in policy | Uses a policy to control traffic destined for the FortiGate itself. | Review the policy’s scope and verify the effective result from both permitted and unpermitted networks. |
CISA likewise urges organizations to make firewall administration inaccessible from the public internet. The advisories do not provide comparative performance measurements for these options; choose based on operational need and validate the resulting exposure.

3. Patch using a supported, device-specific path
Fortinet’s June 2026 guidance recommends the latest versions of FortiOS 7.4, 7.6, or 8.0 and notes that those versions support PBKDF2 hashing for administrator credentials. The appropriate target and upgrade sequence depend on the appliance model and its starting version. Check Fortinet’s current release notes and compatibility guidance before scheduling an upgrade; do not assume every model can move directly to the same branch or release.
Fortinet also references removing older legacy password settings through set login-lockout-upon-weaker-encryption. Treat this as a configuration item to assess against the current official guidance for your device, rather than applying an isolated setting without checking its context.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security advises checking for fixes related to CVE-2024-55591, CVE-2025-59718, and CVE-2025-59719. Its June 2026 alert is a useful cross-check, but verify current status and the correct remediation in official, model-specific release information before making changes.
4. Compare accounts and configuration with a known-good baseline
Review administrator, firewall, and VPN users, along with relevant configuration, against a known-good backup or baseline. Investigate accounts you cannot explain and changes that were not approved. Fortinet names forticloud, fortiuser, fortinet-support, and fortinet-tech-support as examples of suspicious account names. They are leads to check—not a complete list, and not proof of compromise by themselves.

5. Review device, VPN, and identity logs
Look for successful administrative access from unfamiliar IP addresses, unexpected VPN activity, and unexplained configuration changes. Review domain-controller logs as well for suspicious accounts, unusual access, or signs of lateral movement from the edge device into the organization. Escalate unexplained successful access or unauthorized changes for incident investigation rather than treating them as routine noise.
6. Escalate when activity suggests persistence
A password reset may not remove an attacker who has established another way to regain access. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency cautions that credential changes alone may be insufficient when persistence is present. If account, configuration, or log review reveals suspicious activity, preserve relevant evidence and follow an incident-response process. The reviewed advisories do not set one universal threshold for resetting or rebuilding every device; the response should reflect the evidence and the organization’s incident procedures. See the CSA Singapore advisory.
