Unified threat management (UTM) means bringing multiple network-security functions—such as firewalling, intrusion prevention, anti-malware, VPN and web filtering—together in one managed device or platform. FortiGate can provide UTM functions when its protections are configured; Sophos Firewall is the current product family to compare with the older Sophos UTM line. Neither name alone tells you how well a particular appliance will perform with inspection enabled: compare the exact models, features, subscriptions and traffic conditions your network requires.
What does unified threat management mean?
UTM is a consolidation approach: several security capabilities are delivered and managed together. Fortinet describes UTM as combining multiple security features or services in one device. Its examples include antivirus, content and web filtering, email filtering and anti-spam; its broader discussion also covers intrusion prevention (IPS), VPN and data-loss prevention (DLP). Fortinet’s UTM explanation
There is no single universal checklist that every product called UTM must satisfy. The available modules, configuration, licensing and appliance capacity all affect what protection is actually in place. UTM and next-generation firewall (NGFW) are overlapping descriptions, not mutually exclusive product categories. Fortinet, for example, describes FortiGate as an NGFW that can perform a UTM role when its protective features are enabled. Fortinet’s NGFW and UTM comparison
Is FortiGate a UTM?
Fortinet positions FortiGate as an NGFW that can provide UTM functions. In practice, the result depends on which security profiles are enabled on firewall policies, the inspection configuration, the appliance model and its software release. A product’s broad capability list does not mean every protection is active by default or available in every configuration.

Fortinet’s May 2026 Product Matrix lists separate firewall, IPS, NGFW and threat-protection throughput measures by model. These are manufacturer specifications, not a neutral head-to-head test. Read each figure with its model, metric, traffic mix and test caveats; a basic firewall throughput figure is not interchangeable with throughput under threat inspection. Is Sophos UTM the same as Sophos Firewall?
No. Sophos UTM and Sophos Firewall are distinct product generations. Sophos identifies Firewall as the migration destination from UTM and describes its newer capabilities as additions to familiar functions. Sophos UTM-to-Firewall migration information

Sophos’s current Firewall messaging centers on XGS appliances and Xstream architecture. The company also promotes encrypted-threat detection, built-in Network Detection and Response (NDR), AI-based analysis, Active Threat Response, Synchronized Security integrations and Sophos Fusion cloud management. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof of superiority over FortiGate. Sophos Firewall product information
Sophos’s migration comparison lists newer Firewall features including endpoint integration, NDR Essentials, Active Threat Response, zero-touch deployment, SD-WAN, Entra ID integration and MSP support. It also identifies continuing capabilities such as SD-RED support, Sandstorm zero-day protection, on-premises VPN and remote access. Confirm that each specific feature is available for the model, license and deployment you are considering. The company recommends working with a qualified partner for migration guidance. What is the difference between FortiGate and Sophos Firewall?
The useful comparison is not “UTM versus firewall,” but the specific appliance, license and deployment configuration on each side. Fortinet frames FortiGate as an NGFW that can take on UTM functions; Sophos distinguishes its older UTM line from its current Firewall family. Both vendors describe bundled protections, but the supplied product information does not establish a categorical security or speed winner.

How to compare firewall throughput with threat protection enabled
Compare like with like. A firewall-only figure does not show the capacity available when IPS, anti-malware, web controls or other inspection features are enabled. The traffic mix and inspection workload matter too, including encrypted traffic, concurrent sessions and VPN use.
- Choose the exact models. Compare appliances that meet the same interface, capacity, high-availability and deployment requirements.
- Define the protections to enable. List required antivirus or anti-malware, IPS, web filtering, application control, sandboxing, VPN, DLP and response functions. Check licensing and model or release support for each.
- Request comparable performance data. Ask each vendor or reseller for the relevant threat-protection or NGFW throughput, with the enabled features, traffic mix, TLS inspection assumptions, concurrent sessions and VPN load identified.
- Separate specification from test evidence. Treat vendor-published figures as specifications, not independent comparative results. If the decision depends on performance, test both devices with representative traffic and the intended policies.
- Compare the operational fit. Include management, logging, reporting, identity and endpoint integrations, rollout, support, updates and the team’s experience with each platform.
Fortinet’s matrix separates several throughput measures, but a fair numerical comparison also requires equivalent Sophos data for a named model under comparable conditions. Do not infer an overall winner from unlike metrics.

Which firewall is better for a small business?
There is no evidence-based universal winner here. A small business should choose the appliance that can handle its expected inspected traffic and VPN use, supports its required security features, fits its network interfaces and integrations, and can be administered and supported reliably. A smaller network does not remove the need to size for inspection: enabled protections can affect capacity.
Before committing, compare full regional quotes for hardware, security subscriptions, support, renewals and any professional services. Current like-for-like regional prices are not established in the cited materials. Include migration effort and operator familiarity in the decision, rather than treating appliance price or a single throughput number as total cost.
