If you’ve forgotten your Samsung PIN, first check whether you changed it within the past 72 hours. On supported Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later, you may be able to unlock the phone with the previous PIN, password, or pattern without erasing its data. If that option is unavailable, Samsung’s SmartThings Find cannot remotely unlock the phone; the remaining reset options erase local data and may require your Google account to set the phone up again.
Can you recover a forgotten Samsung PIN without losing data?
Possibly. Samsung’s previous-lock recovery works only when the phone runs One UI 6.1 or later and the screen lock was changed within the past 72 hours. Samsung says the phone retains the previous lock for that period, and the recovery route is available once per lock type. See Samsung India’s instructions for unlocking a Galaxy device.
After at least five failed attempts, look for the Forgot PIN?, Forgot Password?, or Forgot Pattern? option; the wording can vary. Select the relevant option and enter the previous lock method when prompted. Do not guess repeatedly: three incorrect entries of the previous method end this recovery route.

- Make at least five attempts until the forgotten-lock recovery option appears.
- Tap the option for your lock type.
- Enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern carefully.
- If accepted, set a new screen lock and save it somewhere secure.
If the option does not appear, the phone does not meet the software or timing requirements, or you no longer know the previous lock, move on to the reset choices below.

Will SmartThings Find unlock the phone remotely?
No. Samsung UK states, “It is no longer possible to remotely unlock your phone using SmartThings Find.” Its available erase function is not a workaround for keeping your files: erasing the phone performs a factory reset. Read Samsung UK’s guidance for when you can’t unlock a Galaxy device.
Remote erase has prerequisites. Samsung says the phone must be powered on, connected to a network, signed in to a Samsung account, and configured to allow remote controls. If it is offline, Samsung India says an erase request takes effect when it next connects to the internet. Erasing deletes the phone’s local data; it does not recover access while preserving it. What should you check before a factory reset?
A factory reset deletes personal data stored on the device. If the phone’s contents are not backed up elsewhere, resetting can make them unavailable. Samsung recommends backing up important files before a reset when possible. Most importantly, confirm you can sign in to the Google account previously registered on the phone. Google Factory Reset Protection may require that account during setup after the reset.
- Check account access: Make sure you know the Google account credentials previously used on the device. Samsung says Android 9 and later may also accept the previously configured screen-lock method for ownership verification.
- Consider your backup: A reset removes local files and settings. Use an existing backup if one is available; do not assume a reset will preserve anything stored only on the phone.
- Understand remote erase: It still deletes data and depends on the Samsung account, network, power, and remote-control settings described above.

What if Google verification blocks setup after a reset?
If the phone asks for the Google account previously registered on it and you cannot complete verification, Samsung recommends contacting support; its reset guidance also advises service-center assistance when Google account verification cannot be completed after a reset. A reset does not remove this ownership check, so don’t proceed on the assumption that wiping the phone will bypass account verification.
