If you changed your Samsung Galaxy pattern within the last 72 hours, your phone may let you unlock it with the previous pattern without erasing local data. This option is limited to supported devices running One UI 6.1 or later. If it is unavailable or you do not know the old pattern, Samsung’s documented fallback is to erase and reset the phone—not to reveal or remotely bypass the current pattern.
First check whether your previous pattern can unlock the phone
Samsung supports a previous-screen-lock recovery option on eligible Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later. It may work for up to 72 hours after you change a pattern, PIN, or password, provided you still remember the previous lock method. Samsung’s UK support guidance, updated May 22, 2026, describes this feature; availability depends on the device and software.
- After five or more unsuccessful unlock attempts, look for Forgot pattern or similar wording on the lock screen. The prompt wording can vary with the lock type and software.
- Enter the previous pattern when prompted. Samsung’s guidance says the previous lock method can be used once for that lock type. Samsung India’s guidance says three incorrect entries of the previous method end further attempts, so do not keep guessing.
- If accepted, follow the on-screen instructions to set a new screen lock.
If the prompt does not appear, the phone may not support the feature, the 72-hour window may have passed, or the previous lock method may not be available. Samsung’s support pages do not establish a way to use this option on every Galaxy model.

Choose between a data-preserving attempt and an erase/reset

Samsung states that factory resetting restores the phone to its factory-default settings and deletes personal data stored on the device. Back up anything still accessible before resetting. A reset is not a way to keep unbacked-up photos, messages, or other local files.

Use Samsung’s remote erase only if you accept data loss
Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may provide an Erase data action, depending on the device, account, settings, and service availability. Samsung’s instructions require the phone to be on and connected to a stable network for the described functions, with a Samsung account on the device and remote controls enabled. Samsung India’s forgotten-lock guidance says an offline phone may be erased when it next comes online.
These services erase the phone; they do not show the forgotten pattern or unlock the device while preserving its data. If the prerequisites were not enabled or the phone cannot connect, remote erasure may not be available.

Understand account checks before resetting
After a factory reset, Google Factory Reset Protection may ask you to verify a Google account previously registered on the phone. Depending on the reset flow, Samsung account credentials may also be required. Confirm that you know the relevant account sign-in details before starting; resetting does not remove ownership checks.
Follow model-specific reset instructions
The route into Recovery mode and the screens shown vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s support guidance does not provide one button sequence that applies to every phone. Identify the exact model and follow Samsung’s current instructions for that model rather than trying a generic key combination.

If you cannot complete account verification or the setup process after resetting, contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center. Samsung’s US reset guidance and regional forgotten-lock support pages direct users to support when device-specific help is needed.
