Yes—the M4 iPad Air costs dramatically less than the iPhone Duo, but they are different kinds of devices. Apple lists the iPhone Duo from $1,999 in the United States, while U.S. deal examples put the 11-inch 128GB M4 iPad Air at $649 and the 13-inch 128GB model at $849. The widely reported 21% discount is more specific: an Amazon Australia bundle pairing the 11-inch 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad Air with Apple Pencil Pro for A$1,155, down from an A$1,468 reference price.
That Australian promotion does not automatically apply in other countries. Check your local retailer’s live price, stock, taxes and whether the Pencil is included before treating the deal as equivalent.
How much cheaper is the M4 iPad Air?
Using Apple’s U.S. starting price for the iPhone Duo and the reported U.S. iPad Air deal examples, the gap is substantial:
| Device | Configuration | Reported price | Difference from a $1,999 iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | 256GB | $1,999 | — |
| iPhone Duo | 512GB | $2,199 | — |
| iPhone Duo | 1TB | $2,599 | — |
| iPhone Duo | 2TB | $3,199 | — |
| M4 iPad Air | 11-inch, 128GB, Wi‑Fi | $649 deal example; $749 listed MSRP | $1,350 less than the iPhone Duo |
| M4 iPad Air | 13-inch, 128GB, Wi‑Fi | $849 deal example; $949 listed MSRP | $1,150 less than the iPhone Duo |
The iPhone figures come from Apple’s U.S. shop and rise with storage. The iPad figures are reported U.S. examples, not a guaranteed permanent price. Taxes, cellular versions, storage choices and accessories can change the final total.

What the 21% iPad Air deal actually includes
The 21% claim refers to an Amazon Australia listing reported by Click Frenzy: an 11-inch, 128GB, Wi‑Fi M4 iPad Air bundled with Apple Pencil Pro for A$1,155 instead of an A$1,468 RRP. The discount is therefore tied to Australia, one configuration and a bundle. It is not evidence that every M4 iPad Air listing worldwide is 21% off.
- Confirm that the listing ships to your location and is sold under the retailer’s current terms.
- Check the currency, taxes, delivery charges and return policy.
- Read the contents list: some sales are tablet-only, while this reported offer included Apple Pencil Pro.
- Compare the live price with the current local RRP rather than relying on an old reference price.
iPhone Duo and M4 iPad Air: different jobs
| Consideration | iPhone Duo | M4 iPad Air |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor | Foldable phone with a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display | Traditional tablet available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes |
| Processor | A20 Pro | M4 |
| Primary strength | One device combining phone connectivity with a foldable large screen | Large-screen browsing, documents, media, drawing and tablet productivity |
| Accessories | Phone accessories and possible carrier-plan costs | Apple Pencil Pro, cases and optional keyboard accessories |
| U.S. entry price | From $1,999 for 256GB | Reported deal examples from $649 for 11-inch 128GB and $849 for 13-inch 128GB |
Apple positions the M4 iPad Air as a tablet workspace, not as a substitute phone. It does not provide the iPhone Duo’s phone-first experience, outer display or foldable design. Conversely, the iPad’s 11-inch or 13-inch canvas is more practical for split-screen work, reading, drawing and sustained typing than a compact phone display.

What M4 performance means
Apple says the M4 iPad Air is up to 30% faster than the iPad Air with M3 and up to 2.3 times faster than the iPad Air with M1. Those are Apple’s stated comparative figures, so real gains depend on the app, workload and older model being replaced. For ordinary browsing and streaming, screen size and ergonomics may matter more than the processor difference; demanding creative and multitasking apps have more room to benefit.

Apple Pencil Pro is compatible with the M4 iPad Air, as is Apple Pencil (USB‑C), but compatibility does not mean either stylus is included in every box. The Australian 21% example specifically bundled Apple Pencil Pro. A tablet-only listing will require a separate Pencil purchase if you want handwriting, annotation or drawing.

Also budget for a model-specific protective case. Keyboard accessories can add substantially to the cost of a laptop-style setup, so compare the complete setup rather than the tablet headline price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you choose the 11-inch or 13-inch model?
Choose the 11-inch iPad Air when portability matters
- You carry the tablet frequently or use it mainly for reading, travel, notes and streaming.
- You want the lowest purchase price; the reported U.S. 128GB Wi‑Fi deal was $649.
- You prefer a smaller footprint for handheld use and compact bags.
Choose the 13-inch iPad Air when workspace matters
- You plan to keep documents, timelines or two apps visible side by side.
- You draw, edit media or type for long sessions and value a larger canvas.
- The reported U.S. 128GB Wi‑Fi deal at $849 still leaves a large gap below the iPhone Duo’s $1,999 starting price.
Both sizes use the M4 platform. The decision is primarily about screen area, portability and your accessory setup, not a different processor tier.

Who should buy which device?
Buy the iPhone Duo if you need one connected phone
The iPhone Duo makes sense when cellular calling, messaging, pocket portability and a foldable display must live in one device. Its $1,999 U.S. starting price is for 256GB; selecting 512GB, 1TB or 2TB raises the price to $2,199, $2,599 or $3,199 respectively.
Buy the M4 iPad Air if you already have a phone
The iPad Air is the stronger value when you want a larger screen for work, entertainment or Pencil input and can keep using your existing phone. The reported prices are for Wi‑Fi models; adding cellular connectivity, more storage or a keyboard changes the calculation.
