Use Forge for a new modded Minecraft server. Do not choose Cauldron for a new deployment: it is effectively retired, limited to Minecraft 1.6.4 and 1.7.10, and no longer actively developed. Forge loads Forge mods but does not run Bukkit or Spigot plugins by itself. If you need both ecosystems, use a maintained Forge hybrid such as Mohist, after verifying that the specific fork supports your Minecraft version.
Forge, Cauldron or a hybrid: the short answer
The choice is primarily about maintenance and compatibility, not a simple performance ranking. Forge is the current starting point for a server whose content comes from Forge mods. Cauldron is a legacy server type tied to older Minecraft releases, so it is relevant only when you are deliberately preserving an old world and its exact mod/plugin stack. A hybrid such as Mohist is the option to investigate when one server must load Forge mods and expose the Bukkit/Spigot plugin API.

If you are starting from zero, the default decision is Forge. Move away from that default only when a required plugin cannot be replaced with a mod, or when you have a legacy world that must remain on its original software and Minecraft version.
What Forge is and why it is the normal starting point
Forge is a modding platform, not a plugin server
Forge provides the loader and server environment that Forge mods expect. A mod can add blocks, entities, dimensions, automation, world-generation rules, interfaces, or gameplay systems, provided the mod and server are built for compatible Minecraft and Forge versions. The server and every connecting client normally need matching mod files and configuration, because the mod changes the game content rather than merely adding an administration command.

That makes Forge a good fit when the server’s identity comes from a curated modpack or from a small set of gameplay mods. It also gives a project a maintained path toward newer Minecraft releases, unlike a server platform whose development stopped years ago. “Maintained” does not guarantee that every individual mod has been updated; it means the platform itself remains the sensible base to check first.
Forge does not expose Bukkit or Spigot APIs by itself
Installing a Bukkit or Spigot plugin in a plain Forge server does not make the plugin usable. A plugin is compiled against a different server API and expects that API’s event model, command registration, permissions, and services. Forge alone does not provide those interfaces. The result is usually a plugin that is ignored, fails during startup, or breaks because a required API is absent.

You need a hybrid server that deliberately implements both sides, and even then compatibility is a project-by-project question rather than a promise that every plugin and mod will work together.
Why Cauldron is no longer a sensible new-server choice
Its development and version range are the decisive problems
Cauldron is effectively retired. Hosting documentation describes it as limited to Minecraft 1.6.4 and 1.7.10, and the available material agrees that active development stopped after the 1.7.10 era. That means a new installation starts with an old Minecraft baseline, an old Java and mod ecosystem, and a shrinking pool of compatible software. It is not a current alternative to Forge.

The phrase “Cauldron server still supported” can therefore mean two different things. An old Cauldron server may continue to run if its operating system, Java runtime, mods, and plugins remain intact. That operational possibility is not the same as upstream development, security maintenance, or support for modern Minecraft versions. Treat Cauldron as preservation software, not as a forward-looking platform.
When keeping Cauldron can still be justified
There is one defensible use case: an existing community has a world whose behavior depends on a particular 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 mod-and-plugin combination, and replacing any component would change the experience. In that case, freeze the environment, document every installed component, and maintain tested backups. Do not migrate merely because a hosting panel still offers a Cauldron template; availability in a control panel does not imply active development.

If a required feature is specifically tied to a legacy plugin, first determine whether preserving the old server is more honest than attempting a partial migration. A modernized world and a preserved legacy world are separate projects with different compatibility goals.
When you need Forge mods and Bukkit/Spigot plugins together
Use a purpose-built hybrid, not plain Forge
A mixed server needs a layer that can load Forge mods while implementing the Bukkit/Spigot API expected by plugins. The project most often named for this role in the available material is Mohist. It describes itself as a Minecraft Forge hybrid server implementing the Spigot/Bukkit API and traces its lineage through earlier hybrid projects, including Thermos, Cauldron and MCPC+.

That description tells you what Mohist is designed to do; it does not prove that a particular combination of mods and plugins will work. Hybrid behavior can expose edge cases where both ecosystems expect to control the same event, entity, command, permissions system, or world operation. Test the exact versions and exact files you intend to deploy instead of assuming that “Forge-compatible” and “Bukkit-compatible” automatically means “compatible together.”
Verify the fork and release before choosing Minecraft
Mohist is not a single, unchanging release line. The version information visible across different forks does not agree, and none of the referenced pages was confirmed as the current official release list. Examples recorded in the available material include:

Choose the Minecraft version only after opening the project’s official release list, confirming that a build exists for that version, and checking the project’s status notes. Then check every required mod and plugin against that same version. A server running an unsupported build may start while still failing under real gameplay, updates, or a restore.
A decision framework that avoids the wrong installation
- List the non-negotiable content. Record each required mod, plugin, map, permission feature and administration tool. Separate “must have” items from conveniences that could be replaced.
- Identify the Minecraft version attached to that content. A mod or plugin’s name is not enough; write down its Minecraft version, loader or API expectation, and any dependency.
- Choose the narrowest platform that satisfies the list. Use Forge when all required server content is Forge-based. Use a hybrid only when a genuine Bukkit/Spigot requirement remains. Keep Cauldron only for a deliberately preserved legacy stack.
- Check maintenance before migrating the world. Confirm that the chosen platform has a build for your target version and that the project is still publishing or maintaining releases. For Mohist, do this at the fork level.
- Build a disposable test instance. Install the selected server with a copy of the mods, plugins and configuration. Test startup, world loading, player login, commands, permissions, chunk generation and the features that motivated the choice.
- Decide whether the migration is worth the compatibility risk. If the test exposes missing blocks, broken entities, data errors or plugin failures, either remove the conflicting component, stay on the old server, or redesign the feature. Do not let the production world become the test environment.
How to move an existing Cauldron world safely
Changing server software is not a file rename. World data can refer to blocks, entities, dimensions and saved data that the destination software does not understand. The documented migration risk includes missing blocks, broken entities and world corruption. A backup is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional precaution.

- Stop the live server cleanly. Do not copy a world while region files are being written. Record the current Minecraft version, Cauldron build, Java runtime, mods, plugins and configuration files.
- Create more than one restorable backup. Keep an untouched copy of the complete world and server configuration in a separate location. Label it with the date and the original software version. Test that the archive can be opened before making changes.
- Inventory every legacy dependency. Note custom blocks, entities, dimensions, inventories, permissions, commands and plugin-owned data. A destination server may load terrain while silently losing data belonging to an absent mod or plugin.
- Set up the destination separately. Do not overwrite the original installation. Use a new directory and a copied world so that a failed experiment leaves the source intact.
- Match versions before changing platforms. A move from Cauldron to Forge or a Forge hybrid should first target a Minecraft version for which every essential component is available. Jumping versions and platforms at the same time multiplies the possible causes of failure.
- Start with logs and a small test area. Confirm that the server reaches a stable state, then inspect several dimensions, storage systems, farms, redstone mechanisms, custom mobs and protected regions. Have players perform ordinary activities rather than checking only whether the console says “done.”
- Compare the test world with the backup. Look for missing blocks, changed inventories, absent entities, broken commands, permission errors and altered chunk behavior. If anything important is wrong, shut down the test and restore the source rather than repeatedly modifying the only copy.
- Announce a rollback plan before going live. Keep the original Cauldron installation offline but restorable until the new server has survived a planned verification period. Tell players which Minecraft version and client files they need.

Operational trade-offs beyond the feature list
Maintenance burden
Forge gives you a maintained platform, but maintenance still occurs at the modpack level. Every update can require coordinated changes to the server, client files, dependencies and configuration. A hybrid adds another compatibility layer and therefore another place where an update can alter behavior. Cauldron appears simpler only because its feature set is frozen; that simplicity comes with an old version ceiling and no active platform development.

Player and administrator workflow
Forge servers generally require clients to use the matching mod set. A plugin-based administration workflow may be familiar to staff, but a hybrid does not eliminate the client requirements imposed by Forge mods. Define which functions are supplied by mods and which are supplied by plugins, then document commands, permissions and update procedures separately. This prevents an administrator from assuming that a plugin command can manage a mod feature, or that a mod can replace a plugin’s server-side service.
Testing and support expectations
Support becomes harder as the number of layers grows. When a player reports a fault on plain Forge, you can first isolate the Forge version, the mod and its dependencies. On a hybrid, the same fault may involve Forge, the hybrid implementation, a Bukkit-facing plugin and an interaction between them. Keep a staging server, pin known-good versions and change one component at a time. For a legacy Cauldron server, document the frozen environment because modern support channels may not cover it.
Which choice fits common server plans?
Starting a new modded survival or technical server
Choose Forge. Build the server around a defined Minecraft version and a tested mod list. Add only the mods that provide a clear player or administration benefit, because each dependency becomes part of future update and troubleshooting work. Do not select Cauldron simply because an old tutorial uses it.

Preserving a 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 community
Keep Cauldron only if preserving the existing world and its exact behavior is the goal. Freeze the installation, maintain redundant backups and avoid presenting it as a modern platform. If you want new features as well, run a separate current server rather than forcing incompatible software into the legacy world.

Evaluate Mohist or another current Forge hybrid for the exact Minecraft version. Confirm the release status of the specific fork, test every required plugin and mod together, and keep a rollback copy. If one plugin is optional, removing it and using plain Forge may produce a more predictable server.
Running only Bukkit/Spigot plugins
Neither Forge nor Cauldron is the natural answer when no Forge mods are required. Select a server platform designed for the plugin API instead. This comparison matters when you need Forge content; adding Forge to a plugin-only plan introduces unnecessary client and compatibility considerations.
Pre-launch checklist
- Every required mod and plugin has a build for the same Minecraft version.
- The selected server software is maintained, or a deliberate legacy-preservation decision explains why it is not.
- A Forge-only plan does not depend on Bukkit/Spigot plugins.
- A hybrid plan identifies the exact Mohist fork and confirms its release status from the project’s own list.
- The world, configuration, mods and plugins have separate restorable backups.
- A copied test world has been opened and checked for blocks, entities, dimensions, inventories, commands and permissions.
- Players know the required Minecraft version, client mods and planned maintenance window.
- The original server remains recoverable until the replacement has passed real gameplay tests.
Final recommendation
For almost every new modded server, choose Forge. Cauldron is a retired, legacy platform limited to old Minecraft versions and should be preserved only when its exact environment is the point of the project. Forge cannot run Bukkit or Spigot plugins by itself; if both mods and plugins are essential, evaluate a Forge hybrid such as Mohist, verify the specific fork’s supported version, and test the complete stack before migrating a real world. Back up first, test on a copy, and keep the original installation available until the new server proves it can preserve the content players depend on.
