Choose Gatherer if you regularly collect forage or want the path to Botanist; choose Forester if wood is your bottleneck or you want Tapper or Lumberjack. Forester gives 25% more wood from trees, stumps, and logs. Gatherer gives a 20% chance to double-harvest eligible forage. Your level 5 choice also determines which level 10 professions you can choose, so weigh that branch—not just the immediate bonus.
How the two level 5 professions differ
| Decision | Forester | Gatherer |
|---|---|---|
| Level 5 effect | Trees, stumps, and logs drop 25% more wood. | 20% chance to harvest an eligible forage item twice. |
| Kind of benefit | More wood when chopping; actual drops vary. | A chance-based extra forage pickup, not a double yield on every item. |
| Level 10 paths | Tapper or Lumberjack | Botanist or Tracker |
| Best fit | You are short on wood, plan to chop often, or want a tree-product profession. | You pick forage regularly, collect truffles, or want Botanist’s quality benefit. |
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Foraging page lists the level 5 effects and their level 10 branches. These mechanics make neither profession universally better: the useful choice depends on what you gather and which later ability you want.

What Forester’s 25% wood bonus means
Forester increases wood yield, not the sale price of wood. The wiki’s tree reference gives a mature common tree as an example: it yields 12–16 wood without Forester and 15–20 with it, excluding the stump. For Mahogany, the page lists 10 hardwood without Forester and 12 or 13 with it. Stump yields also increase. These are listed game-specific yields, not a guaranteed fixed result from every chop.

Pick Forester when you repeatedly need wood for crafting or construction, or when a sustained tree-chopping push is part of your plans. Its level 10 options suit different goals: Tapper makes syrups worth 25% more, while Lumberjack gives all trees a chance to drop hardwood. Details and the branch relationship are listed on the Foraging page.

What Gatherer counts—and what it does not
Gatherer adds a 20% chance of a double harvest for eligible forage. It is a roll for an additional item, not a promise that every pickup doubles. The wiki’s forage information includes truffles and ground Red Mushrooms, Purple Mushrooms, and Fiddlehead Ferns in the Mines and Skull Cavern among forageables.
Do not assume every loose object on the ground qualifies. The wiki also documents a bug that can duplicate certain non-forage ground items in the Mines and grant Foraging XP; those are not intended Gatherer targets.
Gatherer is a natural fit if you already make seasonal forage pickups part of your routine or collect truffles. Its level 10 choices are Botanist, which makes eligible forage items the highest quality, and Tracker, which reveals forageable locations. Higher-quality forage can improve sale value, energy and health recovery, and friendship points when given as liked or loved gifts. See the Foraging page for the profession details and the Quality page for quality effects.

How to choose based on your farm
- Choose Forester if you often run out of wood, expect to chop many trees, or specifically want Tapper or Lumberjack.
- Choose Gatherer if you regularly pick eligible forage, collect truffles, or want Botanist’s high-quality forage.
- If neither resource is a problem, decide by the level 10 profession you would rather have and how often you actually forage. The choice is about your routine and goals, not a universal ranking.
Think about your current bottleneck as well as what you expect to do next. A wood shortage makes Forester immediately useful; frequent forage collection gives Gatherer more chances to produce extra items. If your main reason for choosing is a level 10 ability, follow the corresponding level 5 branch.

Why older advice about Forester’s sale bonus is outdated
Some older guides describe Forester as making wood sell for 50% more. That is not the current effect: the Stardew Valley Wiki version history records that in version 1.4, Forester changed from “Wood worth 50% more” to “Trees drop 25% more wood.” The wiki also records version 1.6 changes affecting foraging, including Botanist and items obtained by shaking fruit trees; those details do not change the level 5 definitions above.
The wiki is a community-maintained reference, not a developer-authored ranking of the professions. Its mechanics support a conditional choice: prioritize the resource and level 10 path that match how you play.
