The “$2 million” headline most likely refers to a 1543 first edition of Nicolaus Copernicus’s De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, which sold for $2.2 million at Christie’s in 2008. The three-work sequence associated with the headline is Copernicus’s heliocentric book, Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica, and Albert Einstein’s relativity work—not a documented three-book lot sold together for exactly $2 million.
The three works behind the headline
A modern anthology, On the Shoulders of Giants: The Great Works of Physics and Astronomy, groups the relevant texts as Copernicus’s On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, Newton’s Principia Mathematica and Einstein’s The Principle of Relativity. Together, they trace a transformation in humanity’s model of the cosmos: Earth moves around the Sun, motion follows mathematical laws, and space and time are linked by relativity.
Copernicus: De revolutionibus (1543)
Copernicus’s first edition placed the Sun, rather than Earth, at the center of the planetary system. That heliocentric arrangement challenged the dominant Earth-centered picture and helped accelerate the scientific inquiry that followed.

Newton’s Principia supplied mathematical laws of motion and universal gravitation. It turned a new description of the heavens into a general physical system capable of explaining both terrestrial and celestial motion.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Einstein: relativity and primary papers
Einstein’s contribution is often encountered through The Principle of Relativity in modern collected editions, but rare-material sales frequently involve individual scientific-paper offprints or groups of them rather than one universally defined “first-edition” volume.
What the $2 million figure actually represents
Christie’s reported that an exceptionally fine 1543 first edition of Copernicus’s book realized $2.2 million in 2008, against an estimate of $900,000 to $1.2 million. The result explains the rounded “$2 million” hook. It does not establish that Copernicus, Newton and Einstein books were offered together for that sum.

The sale was for a particularly desirable copy. Auction prices for early scientific books vary sharply with edition, printing state, condition, completeness, provenance and annotations, so the result should not be treated as a standard price for every 1543 copy.
Newton’s first edition can cost more
A first edition of Newton’s Principia sold for $3,719,500 at Christie’s in 2016. Fine Books & Collections reported the transaction as a world auction record for a printed scientific book at the time. Christie’s catalogue also quoted Einstein calling Newton’s achievement “perhaps the greatest intellectual stride that it has ever been granted to any man to make.”

Edition alone does not determine value. Sotheby’s described a 1726 third edition as Newton’s final lifetime edition and the definitive text revised by him; that copy carried an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. The contrast shows why a later, authoritative edition can be historically important without approaching the price of a rare first edition.
Einstein collecting follows a different pattern
Einstein-related material is often sold as primary papers, presentation copies or bound collections of offprints. Christie’s recorded a group of 130 Einstein offprints selling for $314,500 in 2008. That is a collection of separate printed papers, not a directly comparable book price alongside the Copernicus and Newton first editions.

How to compare copies and prices
| Work or material | Sale or edition detail | Reported figure | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copernicus, De revolutionibus | Fine 1543 first edition, Christie’s, 2008 | $2.2 million realized; $900,000–$1.2 million estimate | The rounded $2 million reference |
| Newton, Principia Mathematica | First edition, Christie’s, 2016 | $3,719,500 realized | A first-edition Newton can exceed the Copernicus result |
| Newton, Principia Mathematica | 1726 third edition, final lifetime edition; Sotheby’s listing | $10,000–$15,000 estimate | Edition, revision history and market context matter |
| Einstein material | Collection of 130 offprints, Christie’s, 2008 | $314,500 realized | Paper collections are a distinct collecting category |
When assessing a specific copy, check:
- Edition and printing state: first editions and significant revisions can command very different prices.
- Condition and completeness: missing leaves, repairs, stains or replaced bindings affect desirability.
- Provenance and annotations: documented ownership or meaningful contemporary notes may add value.
- Format: a bound book is not directly comparable with a group of scientific offprints.
- Estimate versus result: an auction estimate is guidance before bidding; the realized price reflects that sale’s competition.
Can you buy all three without a multimillion-dollar budget?
Yes, if “own” means owning readable modern editions rather than original sixteenth- or seventeenth-century copies. On the Shoulders of Giants: The Great Works of Physics and Astronomy provides a single anthology containing the Copernicus, Newton and Einstein works identified above. Current edition, stock and price vary by retailer, so verify those details before purchasing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A dealer’s asking price, an auction estimate and a final hammer price are different numbers, and no particular copy should be assumed available merely because a comparable auction result exists.

Why these books still matter
The sequence is more than a list of expensive collectibles. Copernicus changed the location of Earth in the cosmic order; Newton expressed motion and gravity in universal mathematical laws; Einstein revised the relationship between space, time and motion. Their books mark successive changes in the framework used to interpret the universe—and the auction records show how strongly collectors value the physical evidence of those changes.
