At the 16 October 2026 price snapshot, Samsung’s 1TB 9100 PRO cost $265 at Amazon—only $5 more than the 1TB 990 PRO. If your desktop or laptop exposes a PCIe 5.0 x4 slot, that small premium buys a drive with roughly twice the advertised sequential-read ceiling. On a PCIe 4.0-only system, however, the 990 PRO remains the sensible choice because the newer drive cannot use its headline bandwidth.

What the 9100 PRO changes

The 9100 PRO is a PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 SSD in the standard M.2 2280 format, built with Samsung V-NAND TLC. Samsung rates the 1TB and 2TB versions for sequential reads of up to 14,700 MB/s; 4TB and 8TB models reach up to 14,800 MB/s. Sequential-write ratings are up to 13,300 MB/s for 1TB and 13,400 MB/s for the larger capacities.

Those figures are vendor maximums, not a promise that every file copy will run at that speed. Samsung says results vary with firmware, capacity and the host system. The published comparison is still striking: the 9100 PRO’s 14,700–14,800 MB/s read ceiling is about twice the 990 PRO’s 7,450 MB/s ceiling.

Ratings by capacity

Capacity Sequential read (up to) Sequential write (up to) Endurance (TBW)
1TB 14,700 MB/s 13,300 MB/s 600
2TB 14,700 MB/s 13,400 MB/s 1,200
4TB 14,800 MB/s 13,400 MB/s 2,400
8TB 14,800 MB/s 13,400 MB/s 4,800

Samsung also quotes up to 2,200K random-read IOPS and 2,600K random-write IOPS. The range includes 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB models, each covered by a five-year limited warranty.

When the $5 premium is worth paying

You have a PCIe 5.0-capable slot

A compatible PCIe 5.0 platform is the essential requirement. Check the motherboard or laptop specifications for an M.2 slot wired for PCIe 5.0 x4; an M.2 socket that is only PCIe 4.0 will limit the 9100 PRO to the older interface’s bandwidth. Installing it in a compatible slot also requires a system that supports NVMe M.2 2280 drives and has enough physical clearance for the drive or its heatsink.

Your work is bandwidth-heavy

High-resolution video work, large project files, AI data sets, data analysis and other sequential workloads can benefit from the extra throughput. Samsung positions the drive for 8K video editing, AI projects, gaming and data analysis. Game loading and everyday application launches may show smaller gains because they depend on many factors besides peak sequential bandwidth.

The street-price gap stays small

The $265 Amazon price for the 1TB 9100 PRO and the $5 difference to the 990 PRO are time-sensitive figures from 16 October 2026. Prices and stock can change, so verify both listings immediately before buying. Samsung’s 2025 launch MSRPs were $199.99 for 1TB, $299.99 for 2TB and $549.99 for 4TB; those launch figures do not predict current retail pricing.

When the 990 PRO is the better buy

  • Your system is PCIe 4.0-only: the 9100 PRO cannot deliver PCIe 5.0-class bandwidth in that slot, so the older drive avoids paying for unused capability.
  • The 9100 PRO premium is substantial: a large price difference changes the value calculation, particularly for gaming or office workloads that rarely saturate sequential throughput.
  • Your device has tight thermal limits: laptops and compact systems may not have room for an additional heatsink or enough airflow for sustained PCIe 5.0 operation.

Cooling and sustained workloads

Samsung sells the 9100 PRO with a heatsink option and claims up to 49% better power efficiency than the 990 PRO. Efficiency does not eliminate heat: PCIe 5.0 transfers can still warm the controller during long writes. Desktop buyers should check whether the motherboard’s M.2 cover provides adequate contact and whether its thickness clears the graphics card. If the board has no suitable thermal solution, choose the heatsink version only if the slot has the required clearance.

Do not treat the maximum write rating as an unlimited sustained-write speed. Samsung’s footnotes specify that write performance uses Intelligent TurboWrite and varies by firmware, capacity and system configuration. The 4TB result was measured on an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X system with DDR5-4800 memory and an ASRock X670E-Taichi motherboard running Ubuntu 22.04.2; that test setup is not a universal guarantee. After the TurboWrite cache is exhausted, long transfers can slow substantially, as with other TLC SSDs.

How to decide before ordering

  1. Identify the slot: read the motherboard or laptop manual and confirm PCIe 5.0 x4 support for the specific M.2 socket, not merely that the system has an M.2 slot.
  2. Check clearance: measure space beneath the graphics card and confirm whether the board’s M.2 shield or the optional drive heatsink will fit.
  3. Match capacity to endurance: select among 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB, using the rated 600, 1,200, 2,400 or 4,800 TBW figures as the warranty endurance limits, not as a daily-use target.
  4. Compare live prices: check the 1TB 9100 PRO and 990 PRO listings immediately before checkout. At a $5 gap, favor the 9100 PRO on PCIe 5.0; at a much wider gap, reassess your workload.
  5. Update firmware: after installation, use Samsung’s current SSD management utility and firmware for your model. Firmware and system configuration can affect the advertised results.

Bottom line for this price snapshot

For a PCIe 5.0-capable computer, the 1TB 9100 PRO is the easy upgrade when it costs only $5 more than the 990 PRO: it offers roughly double the advertised sequential-read ceiling, higher write ratings and a five-year warranty. Keep the 990 PRO for PCIe 4.0-only hardware, constrained thermals or any purchase where the 9100 PRO’s premium is no longer minor. Treat 14,700–14,800 MB/s as best-case vendor specifications, and verify current price, stock, firmware and cooling before ordering.
