Animals form schools, swarms and feeding groups when three forces meet: patchy food makes aggregation worthwhile, predators make coordinated escape urgent, and physics limits how neighbors sense and move around one another. The balance differs from plankton to fish to whales, so there is no single rule that explains every group.

Three forces act together

Food, fear and physics are not separate explanations. A changing prey field can draw animals together; a predator can abruptly reorganize that group; and water movement determines how quickly information and motion pass between neighbors. The result is collective behavior produced by local interactions rather than a single leader directing every individual.

Those interactions operate at very different scales. Plankton respond to swimming, turbulence and other fluid processes. Fish combine visual and flow-sensing information with hydrodynamic effects. Rorqual whales impose the problem on a much larger body, where engulfing prey-filled water and filtering it afterward carries a substantial energetic cost.

Food creates the incentive to aggregate

Patchy prey fields bring baleen whales together

Baleen whales do not encounter food as an even ocean-wide supply. Their prey can be dense, seasonal and short-lived in both space and time. Rorquals therefore target concentrated prey fields, moving to and within patches where the energetic return can justify the effort of feeding.

Rorqual feeding makes the link between ecology and mechanics unusually visible. A lunge is a two-stage system: the whale first engulfs a large volume of prey-laden water, then filters the water while retaining prey. Body anatomy, fluid flow and the energetic price of accelerating that mass all shape when and how the maneuver is useful.

Plankton distributions reflect behavior as well as currents

Plankton are often treated as passive particles, but their distributions also reflect active behavior. Swimming, turbulence and other physical processes interact across spatial and temporal scales, so a plankton patch is not simply a picture of water being carried from one place to another.

Fear can reorganize an entire water column

Predators trigger immediate escape responses

Acoustic observations reported in Current Biology found that “the presence of foraging odontocetes induced immediate diving behavior in mesopelagic sound-scattering layers.” In practical terms, prey exposed to actively foraging toothed whales moved downward quickly, changing the depth at which organisms encountered one another and fed.

Risk also changes migration over longer periods

Predator effects do not end with a single dive. Fish schools can drive deeper vertical migration in zooplankton and micronekton. Because those organisms are abundant and mobile, a response to predators can alter where biomass sits in the pelagic zone and can propagate through the food web.

This is why fear is ecological information rather than merely an individual alarm. The presence of a predator changes the value of different depths, and many animals can respond in the same direction without a central command.

Physics determines how neighbors coordinate

Fish use senses and water movement together

Fish schools coordinate through vision and flow sensing. Each fish can adjust its position relative to nearby animals while also being affected by the water those neighbors move. Wakes and other hydrodynamic interactions may improve alignment, information transfer or locomotor efficiency, but they can also destabilize a group and distribute benefits unevenly.

Eva Kanso, Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics

The same review identifies a central unresolved question: “To what extent can schooling be explained by passive hydrodynamic interactions, and where are individual-level sensing and control required to maintain group cohesion?” A school may therefore be neither purely mechanical nor purely social; the relative contribution changes with conditions and species.

Plankton experience flow as an active environment

For plankton, turbulence is not just background noise. It interacts with swimming and behavior, helping determine encounters, patchiness and movement. Mechanisms identified at one size or time scale should not automatically be applied to every planktonic taxon.

Whale feeding turns fluid mechanics into an energetic decision

In rorqual lunge feeding, the surrounding water is part of the prey-capture apparatus. Engulfment, filtration and body motion are coupled, so a feeding group’s success depends on both prey density and the fluid-mechanical cost of processing water. That coupling explains why a dense patch can be valuable while a thin or dispersed patch is not.

How the examples differ

Group Resource or movement driver Predator-linked change Information and coordination Physical constraint Scale described
Plankton Distributions reflect active behavior, swimming and fluid processes. Fish schools can push zooplankton and micronekton into deeper vertical migration. Behavior interacts with turbulence and other processes; a single sensory mechanism is not established across plankton. Turbulence and flow act across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Cross-scale patterns rather than one fixed group size or duration.
Fish schools The cited review emphasizes collective coordination rather than one universal food trigger. Predator effects are species- and context-dependent in the cited material. Vision and flow sensing provide local information. Wakes and hydrodynamic interactions can aid efficiency or create instability and unequal benefits. School cohesion depends on local interactions, sensing and control.
Baleen whales Dense, seasonal prey aggregations that are patchy in space and time. Not stated in the cited baleen-whale material. Social sensing details are not stated; feeding performance is linked to anatomy and fluid mechanics. Lunge engulfment followed by filtration carries an energetic and fluid-mechanical cost. Seasonal prey fields and individual feeding bouts.

A practical sequence for understanding a group

  1. Locate the resource pattern. Ask whether food is concentrated, temporary or spread broadly. Patchiness creates a reason to converge or keep moving.
  2. Identify the local information. Fish can use vision and flow sensing; plankton respond through behavior and swimming; the relevant whale feeding evidence centers on prey fields, anatomy and water flow.
  3. Check for predator cues. Foraging odontocetes can induce immediate diving, while fish schools can produce deeper migration in zooplankton and micronekton.
  4. Account for the surrounding fluid. Turbulence, wakes and other flows can transmit motion, improve efficiency or destabilize alignment.
  5. Compare energetic costs and benefits. A group persists when the gain from food, safety or movement outweighs the costs imposed by swimming, processing water or losing individual control.

What cannot be generalized

  • There is no universal group-behavior rule that applies unchanged from plankton to whales.
  • Hydrodynamic interactions may explain part of fish-school behavior, but the boundary between passive effects and active sensing and control remains unresolved.
  • Plankton mechanisms span many taxa and scales, so one observation should not be treated as a model for all plankton.
  • The available evidence provides mechanisms and observations rather than a single statistic representing collective behavior across the entire size range.

Why the combination matters

Food explains why animals come together, fear explains why a group can change suddenly, and physics explains which movements are possible or costly. Studying all three at once connects individual decisions to changes in prey layers, fish schools and whale feeding grounds without assuming that any one species follows the same collective script.
