The cheapest delivery app is whichever shows the lowest final total for your exact basket, address, timing, membership status, and promotion. There is no permanent winner: delivery and service charges change by market, restaurant, order size, distance, local rules, and account benefits. To compare apps fairly, build the same order in each one, keep every line item separate, and verify the completed receipt after delivery.
What you are actually comparing
A delivery checkout can combine several different kinds of charges. Treating the displayed total as one mysterious “tax” makes it difficult to see why two apps differ or to spot an error.

| Line item | What it generally represents | How to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Menu subtotal | The prices of food and drinks before other charges. Some restaurants use different menu prices on delivery platforms. | Confirm that the items, quantities, sizes, and menu prices match. |
| Delivery fee | A charge associated with bringing the order to the address. It can vary by merchant, distance, market, and membership. | Record the amount shown for this restaurant and address, not a fee seen on another order. |
| Service fee | A platform charge for arranging or processing the order. Its name, formula, and eligibility can differ by market. | Write down the exact label and amount rather than assuming a fixed percentage. |
| Small-order fee | An extra charge applied when the basket is below an app’s local minimum or threshold. | Compare baskets at the same subtotal; note whether adding an item removes the fee. |
| Other surcharges | Possible long-distance, weather-impact, priority or express, regulatory-response, and similar charges. | Capture every separately named surcharge and its stated reason. |
| Discounts and membership credits | Promotions, restaurant discounts, and subscription benefits that reduce eligible charges. | Use the same promotion and membership assumptions in every app. |
| Tax | Amount calculated under applicable state and local rules for the items, locations, date, and fulfillment details. | Compare the estimate at checkout, then use the completed receipt for the final tax. |
| Tip | An optional payment selected for the delivery worker. | Keep it visible but separate from platform fees and taxes. |
“Free delivery” refers only to a delivery benefit under the conditions stated by the app. It does not necessarily remove service fees, small-order charges, taxes, or a tip. A membership can reduce or eliminate an eligible delivery fee while leaving other charges intact.
Why totals change between apps
Location and local regulation
Apps calculate charges using the delivery address, restaurant location, distance, local regulations, and sometimes the time and date. A fee structure available in one city may not exist in another. Regulatory charges can also appear as a separately named line item or as part of a market-specific pricing model.

Restaurant, basket, and distance
The same platform can quote different delivery and service fees for two restaurants in the same neighborhood. Order size can trigger a small-order fee or change a variable service fee. A longer route may produce a distance-related surcharge. Changing one menu item, quantity, or destination can therefore change more than the subtotal.
Memberships and promotions
DashPass-style membership benefits, restaurant-funded discounts, first-order offers, and time-limited promotions alter the comparison. Decide whether you are comparing a non-member purchase or the net cost for an account that already has a membership. Do not count a discount in one app while ignoring an available discount in another.
Different menu prices
Restaurants may publish different prices on different ordering channels. A lower delivery fee can be outweighed by higher menu prices, while a higher fee can be offset by a restaurant promotion. Compare both the subtotal and the charges below it.
A same-basket comparison that produces a useful answer
The following process is more reliable than searching for a universal “cheapest app.” It compares the quote you would actually pay.
- Choose one restaurant and destination. Use the identical restaurant listing, delivery address, and delivery method in each app.
- Build the same basket. Match item names, sizes, add-ons, quantities, and substitutions. Check the menu subtotal before applying discounts.
- Set the same timing. Compare immediate delivery with immediate delivery, or the same scheduled window. Time-sensitive fees and availability can change.
- Apply equivalent account conditions. Use the same membership assumption and comparable promotions. If a promotion is exclusive to one account, report that as a separate scenario rather than calling it a general app advantage.
- Record every line item before payment. Capture menu subtotal, delivery fee, service fee, small-order fee, other surcharges, discounts, estimated tax, tip, and the displayed total.
- Compare like with like. Calculate the pre-tip total separately, then add the same tip amount to each app if you want an all-in comparison.
- Save the completed receipt. After delivery, compare the final charged amount and finalized tax with the checkout estimate.
This method is an inference from the platforms’ own descriptions of market-, order-, and account-dependent pricing. It does not assume that the apps use identical fee categories or calculate a fee from the same base.
DoorDash: what its current disclosures mean
DoorDash lists delivery and service fees and says an order may also show long-distance, small-order, weather-impact, express, and regulatory-response fees. It says exact charges depend on the merchant, DashPass status, and local regulations.
DoorDash described a fee-structure rollout that began in late July 2026. Its page said the new structure had not yet rolled out in California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico, and Seattle at the time of that disclosure. Because rollout status and local rules can change, the live checkout for your address is more current than a general help page.

In markets using the newer structure, DoorDash says the service fee varies with factors such as distance and order size, while the delivery fee is fixed per order and varies by merchant. Those descriptions are market-specific, not a promise that every account sees the same formula.
DoorDash’s July 23, 2026 company announcement reported that “Over 70% of Recent Orders Would Have Had the Same or Lower Fees” under its model and a median saving of $0.78 per order. Those are DoorDash’s own analyses of recent orders, not an independent cross-app study and not a guarantee for your order. The same announcement stated: “Every fee and tax is shown in full again on the checkout screen before you finalize your order.” That is DoorDash’s description of its checkout presentation.
How tax differs from a platform fee
Tax is imposed under applicable government rules; a delivery or service fee is a charge set by the platform, merchant, or another party in the transaction. They can appear next to each other, but they are not interchangeable. A “taxes and fees” total is not enough to determine which amount is which.
DoorDash says tax can depend on item type, time and date, store and delivery locations, and the fulfillment date and method. It also says checkout tax may be an estimate in some cases and can update when the order is completed. The finalized tax appears on the order receipt, and applicable tax is refunded when a refund is issued.
Do not infer tax by applying a single percentage to the menu subtotal. Taxability can differ among food, beverages, prepared items, delivery-related charges, and jurisdictions. The taxable base can also be affected by discounts and the details of the transaction.
Uber Eats: why a published percentage may mislead
An Uber help page surfaced for a localized market describes delivery fees as location-dependent, service fees as typically 5% of the subtotal, and small-order fees below a threshold. That page is not a universal United States rate card. Treat the percentage as a localized support description, not a guaranteed rate for another city, restaurant, or date.
For a current comparison, use the local Uber Eats checkout quote and record the exact labels shown. Do not compare a localized 5% description directly with DoorDash’s market-specific fee structure, because the two apps may define their bases, exemptions, and fee categories differently.

What the Grubhub enforcement record tells you
A Federal Register publication dated April 16, 2026 recounts an earlier District of Columbia enforcement action involving Grubhub representations and fees. The account addressed disclosure of service and small-order fees, “free delivery” claims when service fees still applied, and combining taxes and fees. It describes requirements to disclose additional charges and list fee names and amounts separately at checkout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis record is useful as a reading rule: inspect each line item and do not treat “free delivery” as “no charges.” It does not establish Grubhub’s current fee schedule or receipt behavior in every market. For a live order, rely on the fee names and amounts shown for your address.
Checkout estimate versus the completed receipt
The pre-payment screen answers “what the app expects to charge.” The completed receipt answers “what the transaction actually settled for.” Keep both records when tax is estimated or when an order is changed, refunded, substituted, or partially unavailable.
DoorDash receipt
DoorDash says the finalized tax is shown on the order receipt and provides help for accessing a specific order’s receipt on its website. Use the order history and receipt view rather than relying only on an email notification or the initial checkout screenshot.
Uber Eats receipt
Uber Eats says a completed order can show the final total together with an updated receipt. Display names and access steps can vary by market and app version, so open the completed order in the app or website and use that final record.

- Match the order ID, restaurant, date, and destination.
- Compare the final menu items and quantities with what was delivered.
- Check whether a substitution, missing item, cancellation, refund, or credit changed the subtotal.
- Compare each fee category individually, not only the grand total.
- Check estimated tax against finalized tax.
- Confirm the tip amount and any later tip adjustment separately.
When the final amount does not match checkout
Tax changed
An estimated tax can be updated when the order is completed. Use the finalized receipt as the authoritative tax record and check whether a refund or credit also changed the amount.
An item was unavailable or substituted
Compare the delivered basket with the receipt. A replacement item can change both the subtotal and tax. A missing item should normally be reflected by a refund or adjustment; verify that the credit appears in the transaction record.

- This card is redeemable via grubhub.com or the Grubhub app in markets where Grubhub is available within the U.S. only.
- To redeem, log into your account online or in the app, select "gift cards", select "add a new gift card" and enter in the gift card number to add the balance to your account.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
A promotion or membership benefit was not applied
Read the offer’s conditions, including minimum subtotal, eligible restaurants, timing, and whether it covers delivery only. Save the checkout view showing the promotion and contact support with the order ID if the completed receipt omits an eligible credit.
A fee appears under an unexpected name
Do not assume a regulatory, priority, weather, or long-distance charge is tax. Review the app’s fee explanation for that order and compare the exact wording with the checkout line item.
The payment-card amount looks different
A temporary authorization, a later tip adjustment, a refund, or a split adjustment can make the card activity differ from the first notification. Reconcile the settled charge with the completed receipt before disputing it.

| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Restaurant and delivery address | Fees and tax depend on the merchant and destination. |
| Date, time, and delivery mode | Promotions, availability, and market pricing can change. |
| Membership status | Benefits can remove or reduce an eligible delivery charge. |
| Basket and menu subtotal | Different menu prices can outweigh a fee difference. |
| Every displayed fee and discount | Separate labels reveal what actually changed between apps. |
| Estimated tax and tip | These should not be confused with service or delivery charges. |
| Final receipt total | It is the record of the completed transaction, including adjustments. |
A screenshot or downloaded receipt is especially useful when comparing a promotion, investigating a tax change, or requesting a correction. Remove payment details before sharing it publicly.
What not to conclude from older fee examples
Consumer Reports has published historical fee-display examples and screenshots for DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. Its 2021 figures describe that period and should not be presented as current prices or current interface behavior. Likewise, a single help page or an old percentage cannot establish a nationwide, permanent fee schedule.
The evidence available today supports a method, not a universal ranking. A claim that one app is always cheapest ignores the variables that determine the quote on the screen in front of you.
Practical answers to the most common questions
Is a delivery fee the same as tax?
No. A delivery fee is a platform or merchant charge; tax is calculated under applicable government rules. They should appear as separate line items when the app discloses them.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Does free delivery mean the order has no extra cost?
No. Service fees, small-order or other surcharges, tax, different menu prices, and tip may still apply.
Which app is cheapest?
There is no universal answer. Compare the same restaurant, basket, address, timing, membership assumptions, and promotion conditions, then use the completed receipt to verify the result.
Why did the tax change after I placed the order?
Some platforms estimate tax at checkout and update it when fulfillment is completed. Item changes, location details, refunds, and local tax rules can also affect the finalized amount.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I include the tip when comparing apps?
Show it separately. Use the same tip amount for an all-in comparison, but do not describe the tip as a platform fee or tax.
Can I use a fee percentage from an app’s help page?
Only if the page clearly applies to your market and current order conditions. A localized Uber Eats page describing a typical 5% service fee is not a general U.S. promise.
What is the best evidence if I need a correction?
Keep the checkout breakdown, order ID, completed receipt, and payment record. Point support to the specific line item and explain whether the issue concerns a fee, tax, discount, missing item, or refund.
