Allergy advocates object when a joke makes deliberate allergen exposure, anaphylaxis, or the person with an allergy the punchline. Their concern is that treating a potentially serious risk as harmless slapstick may influence how peers respond—especially children. The evidence cited here suggests a possible effect on attitudes, but it does not establish that every joke causes harm.
Why food allergy jokes can trouble people
A food allergy is not simply a dislike or preference. Some allergic reactions can become anaphylaxis, which the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) says can be fatal without prompt treatment. That is why advocates object to portrayals that make allergen exposure look like a harmless prank or make a person’s symptoms a source of ridicule.
AAFA’s position is that minimizing the risk may teach peers not to take reactions seriously and may encourage bullying. The distinction is about what the humor asks the audience to laugh at: an awkward situation, or the exposure, the reaction, or the person living with the allergy. It is an editorial way to assess a scene, not a formal rating standard.
What the Peter Rabbit controversy involved
In the 2018 film Peter Rabbit, rabbits throw blackberries at Tom McGregor after learning that he is allergic to them. The scene prompted criticism from food-allergy advocates; Michigan Medicine reported that Sony apologized. Christina Grech, M.D., a pediatrician at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, said, “The idea that a child could come away from watching a popular family movie thinking that food allergens are good material for pranks is a frightening prospect.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The concern was not simply that a character behaved badly. It was that deliberate exposure to an allergen was presented as slapstick in a family film, potentially framing a real health risk as a joke for young viewers.
What the available evidence says—and does not say
Michigan Medicine summarized a content analysis of 115 television shows and movies that referenced food allergy. More than half of the scenes evaluated reportedly depicted allergic reactions humorously. This is a finding as reported by Michigan Medicine, not a count of all media or an independent review of the original study.

Michigan Medicine also summarized an experiment in which college students who watched humorous food-allergy clips showed significantly less support for some school safety policies than students who did not watch those clips. That result suggests a possible effect on audience attitudes in that study. It does not show that every joke changes behavior, that the effect persists, or that the findings apply to every audience or portrayal.
AAFA’s April 6, 2021 letter states that “Over one-third of food allergic children have reported being bullied because of their food allergies,” citing Sicherer et al. (2010), published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. This is AAFA’s attributed figure; it should not be read as a newly verified estimate or as proof that media portrayals caused bullying.

Examples beyond the film
The Tonight Show segment
In an April 6, 2021 letter, AAFA objected to a segment in which Jimmy Fallon and Milo Ventimiglia joked during a prompt to portray tongue swelling, including jokes about shellfish and EpiPens. AAFA President and CEO Kenneth Mendez wrote: “The very real fear that people experience during an allergic reaction is a serious matter and should never be a punchline.” This is the organization’s advocacy position, not a finding from a controlled study.
Saturday Night Live segment
AAFA’s advocacy index also records its objection to a 2022 “Home Repair Show” segment. The organization reiterated its concern that such portrayals can lead peers to dismiss allergy risks and may encourage bullying.

How to assess a portrayal
These questions can help distinguish humor about an uncomfortable moment from humor that trivializes allergy risk. They are interpretive prompts, not a clinical or formal media-safety standard.
Recommended Free Tools
- What is the target of the joke? Is the humor aimed at an awkward situation, or at the person with the allergy, their symptoms, or the risk itself?
- Is exposure deliberate? A prank involving a known allergen is different from an accidental mix-up.
- How serious is the reaction shown? Consider whether symptoms or consequences are minimized for comic effect.
- Who is likely to watch? A scene aimed at children may shape how young viewers interpret an allergy or treat an allergic peer.
- Does the story acknowledge consequences? A portrayal that treats a reaction realistically sends a different message from one that presents exposure as consequence-free.
What this means for families and viewers
It is reasonable to criticize a scene without claiming that one joke will make someone bully a classmate or ignore an emergency. The strongest case for concern is narrower: some portrayals make deliberate exposure or serious symptoms seem funny, and one experiment summarized by Michigan Medicine found lower support for some school safety policies among students who saw humorous clips. Families can use those scenes to discuss why an allergy is not a prank and why a peer’s stated safety needs deserve respect.
