Do foldable phones have worse battery life? Not automatically. Endurance is determined by the specific phone, display you use, brightness, network, software and workload—not by the hinge alone. A foldable can last longer or shorter than a conventional slab phone, but the evidence here does not include a current, same-settings head-to-head test that proves a form-factor winner.

The practical decision is a trade: an opened foldable gives you a much larger screen, while a closed one can be compact but thicker and more mechanically complex. Judge battery claims with the test method attached, then decide whether your daily tasks actually benefit from the inner display.

The direct answer: battery life is model-dependent

There is no defensible rule that every foldable lasts less than every regular phone, or that the larger battery in a slab phone guarantees longer use. Battery life depends on the phone’s processor and software, display size and brightness, refresh behavior, cellular signal, Wi‑Fi use, cameras, games, streaming, background synchronization and whether you use the inner or cover screen on a foldable.

A conventional phone has one display and one uninterrupted chassis. A foldable adds a second display and a hinge, but models differ greatly in battery capacity, efficiency and how their software manages the two screens. Those differences can outweigh the category label. Compare named models tested with the same procedure before drawing a conclusion.

Why a battery-capacity number does not answer the question

Capacity is a specification, not a runtime promise

Battery capacity is normally expressed in milliamp-hours (mAh). Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 at 4,400 mAh in its 2025 product specifications. That number describes the battery’s nominal charge capacity; it does not say how many hours the phone will run in mixed use. Two phones with the same capacity can have different screen efficiency, modem behavior, thermal limits and software power management.

Capacity is still useful when comparing like-for-like devices, but only as one input. A larger figure can be offset by a brighter or larger active display, a less efficient chipset, weak cellular reception or heavier use. Treat mAh as a hardware specification rather than an endurance ranking.

“Up to” playback is a controlled estimate

Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold7 provides up to 24 hours of video playback. Samsung describes this as an internal test using a locally stored 720p video and defined settings. It is a manufacturer result under those conditions, not a prediction that a typical day of navigation, cameras, social apps, gaming and cellular data will last 24 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local playback avoids variables such as changing network signal, server streaming quality and background traffic. That makes the number useful for understanding a repeatable scenario, but it also means you should not compare it directly with a reviewer’s mixed-use or screen-on test.

How independent battery tests differ

Screen-on drain tests

Tom’s Guide publishes a screen-on battery drain test. A test of this kind keeps the display active while a repeatable workload runs until the battery is depleted. The result is informative only alongside the test’s brightness, apps, connection, refresh-rate and stopping conditions. It is not equivalent to a manufacturer’s local-video estimate or to a day of intermittent use.

Category-based tests

PhoneArena reports separate results for different battery-test categories. A phone may perform differently in web browsing, video playback, gaming or another workload because each activity stresses the display, processor and modem in a different way. Read the category and method before comparing two numbers.

Why numbers from different reviews cannot be merged

If one review uses a screen-on drain test and another uses a video loop, the figures answer different questions. Differences in software version, brightness, network, temperature and test duration can be as important as the phone itself. Rank phones only when the same outlet used the same protocol, or describe the results as context rather than a controlled contest.

What the available foldable evidence actually shows

Galaxy Z Fold7: a specification and a manufacturer estimate

The Galaxy Z Fold7 example illustrates the distinction clearly: its published capacity is 4,400 mAh, and Samsung’s “up to 24 hours” figure comes from local 720p playback under defined internal-test settings. Neither figure establishes mixed-use endurance, and neither compares the Fold7 with a regular slab phone.

Motorola Razr Ultra (2026): variation within the foldable category

Tom’s Guide recorded 16 hours 20 minutes for the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 in its 2026 battery-drain test. That result demonstrates that foldables themselves can vary substantially. It is not a test against a conventional phone, and its workload and conditions should not be treated as interchangeable with Samsung’s playback estimate or another outlet’s test.

Foldable-to-foldable comparisons are not slab-phone controls

PhoneArena compares the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold7 with separate workload results. Such a comparison can reveal how those two foldables behave under that outlet’s categories, but it still does not answer whether foldables as a class outlast regular phones. A valid category claim would require current slab and foldable models tested with identical software, settings, network and workloads.

The missing head-to-head

The available evidence does not contain a current, directly controlled foldable-versus-slab comparison using the same protocol. Therefore, any statement that one form factor “wins” battery life would be an inference beyond the measurements. Use the evidence to compare particular models, not to assign a universal category verdict.

How the two displays change everyday power use

Cover-screen days

When you keep a foldable closed for quick messages, calls, authentication codes and short checks, the smaller outer display is the active screen. This can reduce the illuminated area and may make brief interactions less demanding than opening the inner panel, although the exact saving depends on brightness, refresh behavior and software. The important question is how often you can realistically stay on the cover screen.

Inner-screen days

The advantage of a foldable appears when you open it for long reading sessions, documents, maps, multitasking or video. The larger panel gives more space for content and side-by-side apps, but a larger lit area and longer screen-on sessions can draw more energy than brief cover-screen checks. A buyer who uses the inner display for hours should examine tests that keep that display active rather than relying on a short-interaction scenario.

Streaming versus local video

Streaming adds radio activity and changing network conditions to the display and decoding workload. Local playback removes much of that variability. If your day is dominated by cellular streaming, a local-video claim is the wrong proxy; seek a test that specifies streaming and connection conditions.

Gaming, cameras and navigation

Games can keep the processor, graphics hardware and display busy at the same time. Navigation keeps the screen, location services and often the cellular modem active. Camera sessions add image processing and heat. These activities can produce a very different result from web browsing or a video loop, so match the review workload to your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signal strength and background work

In weak cellular coverage, a modem may work harder to maintain a connection. Cloud backups, app updates and push notifications also consume energy between active sessions. Two readers can therefore see different real-world endurance from the same phone even with identical battery capacity.

Everyday trade-offs beyond the battery percentage

Large-screen utility

Samsung describes the Fold7 design goal as bringing a large screen to a pocket-friendly device. The benefit is practical when you regularly edit documents, read long pages, compare information, use split-screen apps or watch video without carrying a tablet. If most of your interactions are short messages, music controls and quick payments, the inner screen may remain closed and provide little value.

Folded size, thickness and weight

A foldable can be shorter or narrower when closed, yet thicker because two halves and a hinge stack together. Weight and thickness affect pocket comfort, one-handed typing and how easily the phone lies flat on a desk. Check the exact model’s dimensions and weight in its current specifications; do not generalize from one foldable to another.

Opening friction and task flow

Every inner-screen task adds an open-and-close decision. Some people appreciate the deliberate transition to a larger workspace; others prefer the immediate, single-screen flow of a slab phone. Consider how often you would open the device during a normal commute, at a desk, while cooking or while carrying something in one hand.

Mechanical complexity and care

A foldable has a hinge and a flexible inner display in addition to the components found in a regular phone. That construction enables the larger screen but introduces parts you must handle according to the manufacturer’s care guidance. Keep the decision focused on the value of the form factor rather than assuming that a more complex design automatically has better or worse battery endurance.

A same-method comparison checklist

Use this process when choosing between a specific foldable and a specific regular phone:

  1. Define your dominant workload. Estimate the share of your day spent on cover-screen checks, inner-screen reading, video streaming, gaming, cameras, navigation and calls.
  2. Collect results from one testing method. Prefer a single outlet’s screen-on or workload test that includes both phones. If no such test exists, keep each result labeled as a separate measurement.
  3. Record the conditions. Note brightness, refresh setting, connection type, software version, temperature, starting charge and whether the test stopped at shutdown or a stated percentage.
  4. Match the screen used. For a foldable, identify whether the reviewer tested the cover display, inner display or a defined mix. A cover-screen result cannot stand in for an inner-screen-heavy day.
  5. Use capacity only as context. Record mAh, but do not convert it into hours or rank phones by capacity alone.
  6. Check charging behavior separately. Look for the supplied or recommended charger, charging time, wired and wireless support, and whether a review measured those under controlled conditions. Charging speed changes how easy it is to recover during a break; it does not prove longer battery life.
  7. Compare carrying dimensions. Check folded and unfolded measurements, weight and hinge design for the exact model and region.
  8. Verify availability and software support. Battery behavior can change with updates, and a model’s price or availability may differ by country. Confirm the current listing before buying.

Which type fits common daily patterns?

Choose a foldable when the inner screen solves a recurring problem

  • You read, edit, compare or multitask often enough that a larger panel replaces tablet use.
  • You want a compact closed shape and accept extra thickness when carrying it.
  • You are willing to evaluate cover- and inner-screen battery tests separately.
  • You value screen utility more than having the simplest possible hardware design.

Choose a regular phone when predictability is the priority

  • Your use is mostly one-screen tasks and you rarely need a tablet-sized workspace.
  • You prefer a thinner, single-piece chassis and consistent one-handed operation.
  • You want battery comparisons that are easier to find because the display configuration is simpler.
  • You would rather spend less attention on opening, closing and caring for a flexible display.

Do not decide from battery capacity alone

If two candidates are close in price and specifications, the better choice is the one whose tested workload resembles your day. A reader who streams over cellular should prioritize streaming or mixed-use evidence; a reader who works on documents should prioritize long inner-screen sessions. Without matching evidence, state the uncertainty instead of treating a single number as definitive.

Practical ways to extend a foldable or regular phone’s endurance

  • Use automatic brightness or a lower level that remains comfortable for your eyes.
  • Prefer Wi‑Fi when it is reliable, especially for long downloads or streaming.
  • Review which apps synchronize continuously and restrict background activity for apps that do not need immediate updates.
  • Download content for trips when local playback is practical; this removes a variable that affects streaming tests.
  • Use the cover display for genuinely short interactions, but do not force it when the inner screen lets you finish a task faster and avoid repeated reopenings.
  • Keep demanding games and navigation sessions in mind when estimating reserve; a percentage that looks comfortable after light use may fall quickly under sustained workloads.
  • Install stable software updates and check release notes when battery behavior changes noticeably after an update.

Questions to ask before purchase

  1. Which exact models am I comparing, and were they tested by the same outlet?
  2. Does the test use the screen I will actually use most?
  3. Are brightness, refresh rate, network and software version stated?
  4. Is the quoted number a manufacturer estimate, a screen-on test or a workload category?
  5. How often will I use the inner display, and does that justify the folded thickness and weight?
  6. What charging setup do I already own, and how quickly can I top up during my routine?
  7. Is the model currently sold and supported in my country?

Bottom line on foldables versus regular phones

Foldables do not have a proven category-wide battery disadvantage or advantage. The evidence shows why: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 has a published 4,400 mAh capacity and an “up to 24 hours” local-video estimate under controlled conditions, while Tom’s Guide measured 16 hours 20 minutes for the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 in a different battery-drain test. Those figures describe different phones and methods, not a single contest.

Buy the foldable if its inner screen will materially improve your work or media habits and you accept the folded bulk and added complexity. Buy the regular phone if a simple, single display meets your needs and you want the least complicated comparison. In either case, choose using same-method workload results and your own screen habits—not the hinge, the mAh number or an “up to” claim in isolation.
