There is no single durability rating for “foldable phones.” Hinge life depends on the exact model, its hinge design, screen construction, dust protection, care instructions, and the service available where you live. Before buying, open and close the actual phone gently, inspect the inner display and factory film, verify the model’s separate water and dust limits, and price repairs and accidental-damage coverage. A manufacturer’s fold-cycle number describes a controlled test—not a guaranteed ownership lifespan.

What a hinge-cycle claim really tells you

Foldable makers often quote a number of folds, but that number belongs to a particular model and test setup. It is not a universal score that lets you rank every foldable generation. Samsung reported that the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 were tested to 200,000 folds. Samsung related that count to roughly 100 folds per day for five years, and said the testing used specified temperature conditions. Its support guidance also says the result is not guaranteed under other conditions. Read the figure as evidence that the hinge survived a laboratory protocol, not as a promise that your phone will last through 200,000 everyday openings.

The test does not establish comparative real-world failure rates between Samsung, Google, Motorola, or any other maker. Differences in opening angle, force, temperature, particles, drops, screen design, and software behavior can all change the practical outcome. No independent, apples-to-apples statistic establishes an expected hinge life for all foldables.

Model or source Published durability information How to interpret it
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 200,000-fold test; Samsung described this as about 100 folds daily for five years. Manufacturer test claim for the 2021 generation. Samsung says the figure was measured at specified temperatures and is not guaranteed in other conditions.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google describes a gearless hinge intended to improve reliability and says the design enabled IP68 water and dust resistance. Company engineering rationale, published October 9, 2025; it is not independent multi-year failure data.
Motorola Razr Fold Motorola Support lists controlled-laboratory testing to IP46, IP48, and IP49 standards. Resistance ratings have defined test boundaries. Motorola says the phone is not dustproof and that resistance decreases with normal wear.
Original Google Pixel Fold Google described manual and machine-assisted repeated folding during development without giving a numerical cycle-life guarantee. Development testing demonstrates engineering work, but it cannot be rewritten as a service-life number.

For the Samsung figures and limitations, see Samsung’s testing description and its support guidance. Google’s hinge descriptions are in its Pixel 10 Pro Fold design article and original Pixel Fold hinge article.

Inspect the hinge before you pay

A shop demonstration cannot predict years of use, but it can reveal poor alignment, abnormal friction, or damage on that particular unit. Handle a display model or unopened phone only as the retailer permits; never force a hinge or deliberately introduce particles.

  1. Open and close it several times. Use the same gentle motion you would use at home. Resistance should feel consistent rather than suddenly tight or loose. Listen for scraping, grinding, clicking that is new or uneven, or any sensation of particles moving inside.
  2. Check the intended opening positions. Confirm that the phone reaches the model’s advertised flat or partially folded positions without sticking, springing back unexpectedly, or stopping short. A small difference in feel between the first and later openings is a reason to request another unit.
  3. Look for wobble and alignment. With the phone open, view both halves edge-on and from above. Uneven edges, a hinge that sits visibly off-center, or one half that twists relative to the other may indicate impact or assembly damage.
  4. Inspect the hinge gap and edges. Use ordinary room light. Look for dents, displaced trim, lifted seals, or debris around the hinge. Do not use a tool, card, or compressed air to probe the gap.
  5. Test the outer and inner displays. Scroll through solid colors and text, and check touch input near the crease and corners. Note lines, flicker, dark spots, pressure marks, or areas that do not respond normally.

This is an acceptance check, not a prediction. A smooth hinge today does not prove a particular failure date, just as a visible crease does not automatically prove a fault.

Know what the inner-screen crease and film mean

Flexible OLED panels can show a crease where they fold. Samsung’s guidance for the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 says a visible crease by itself is not necessarily a defect. That statement is specific to those named devices; do not assume another model has the same service criteria. Ask the seller or consult the exact model’s support page if the crease is deep, changes suddenly, or is accompanied by touch or image problems.

Do not peel off a factory protective film

For the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Samsung advises leaving the inner protective film in place and directing owners to authorized service if it lifts or comes off. Removing a film yourself can damage the panel or complicate warranty assessment. Other models can have different instructions, so identify the exact generation before cleaning, replacing, or removing anything.

Check for damage beyond the crease

  • Look for bubbles, lifting edges, scratches, or a film that is separating near the fold.
  • Examine the display at the angles at which you normally read, not only under bright showroom lights.
  • Check that touch, brightness, and color remain uniform across both halves.
  • Ask what the manufacturer considers normal crease behavior and what symptoms qualify for service.

Separate water resistance from dust protection

An IP rating is not a blanket promise that a foldable is safe everywhere. Water and dust are separate parts of the rating, and a manufacturer can warn that a phone is not dustproof even when it has water-resistance testing.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3

Samsung says the cited Fold3 and Flip3 are not dust-resistant and advises avoiding sand and small particles. Do not infer dust protection from their water-resistance guidance. Beach sand, pockets containing grit, and workshop debris are particularly relevant to a hinge because particles can reach moving or folding surfaces.

Motorola Razr Fold

Motorola Support reports testing to IP46, IP48, and IP49 standards in controlled laboratory conditions. The same guidance says the phone is not dustproof, resistance decreases with normal wear, and dust exposure can reduce hinge life or damage the display. Motorola also says not to intentionally submerge the phone and warns against beach or pool use. Read the full model and regional support page before treating any rating as a buying specification: Motorola’s Razr Fold hardware guidance.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

Google says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s gearless hinge design enabled IP68 water and dust resistance. Google presents the gearless architecture as intended to improve reliability by removing gears and reducing issues associated with gear damage or dust accumulation. Those are Google’s stated design reasons, not independent lifetime measurements. Read the manufacturer’s current care and warranty terms for the region in which you will buy the phone.

For any model, check the exact IP code, the test conditions, exclusions for liquids or particles, and the warning that resistance can decline with wear. “Waterproof” and “dustproof” are usually broader claims than the manufacturer’s own wording supports.

Compare hinge designs without overreading marketing language

Design changes matter, but a new architecture is still a design claim until independent long-term evidence exists. Google industrial designer Sangsoo Park described the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as using “a gearless hinge — which literally means it doesn’t have any gears.” Google’s explanation is that removing gears can reduce problems associated with damaged gears and dust accumulation. That gives you a mechanism to examine, not a verified number of years before failure.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold - Unlocked Smartphone with Gemini Moonstone 256GB | Android foldable phone, 8-inch Super Actua Flex display, 24+ hour battery, hands-free video, advanced Pixel Camera
  • Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
  • The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
  • The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]

The original Pixel Fold coverage is a useful caution: Google described repeated manual and machine-assisted folding during development but supplied no cycle-life guarantee in that account. When comparing generations, record whether the maker gives a cycle count, the test conditions, and the limitations rather than converting an anecdote into a lifespan.

  • Exact generation: A hinge claim for a 2021 phone does not automatically apply to a later redesign.
  • Mechanism: Note whether the manufacturer describes gears, a gearless system, water barriers, or other construction features.
  • Evidence type: Separate a laboratory cycle test, an engineering description, and an independent durability test.
  • Environmental limits: Record dust, sand, water, temperature, and wear warnings alongside the headline claim.

Calculate the repair and coverage risk

Hinge durability is only part of ownership value. A phone can survive its expected folding cycles yet become uneconomical after a screen or hinge repair. Prices, warranty exclusions, parts availability, and authorized service vary by model and country, so verify them locally before ordering.

Check these costs and terms

  • Authorized inner-screen and hinge repair prices for the exact model and storage version.
  • Whether the standard warranty excludes impact, liquid, sand, or removed protective film.
  • Accidental-damage plans, deductibles, claim limits, and whether hinge or inner-screen failures are covered.
  • Availability of an authorized service center and replacement parts in your country.
  • Expected turnaround time and whether data may be erased during repair.

Do not use an old model’s repair price to estimate a new model’s risk. If a local provider does not publish a current price, ask for a written quote and the conditions that would make the repair out of warranty.

Warning signs after purchase

Stop normal use and contact authorized service if the hinge develops grinding, catches at one point, no longer reaches its intended position, or causes a new gap or alignment change. Escalate quickly when a crease changes suddenly, the inner film lifts, touch fails, or lines and dark areas appear. Do not press the display flat, remove the film, inject cleaner, or force particles out of the hinge. Photograph the symptom, note when it began, and keep proof of purchase for the service assessment.

Moisture or sand exposure deserves special caution even when the phone has an IP rating. Follow the model’s drying and service instructions rather than repeatedly opening and closing it to “work out” debris. Resistance ratings are laboratory boundaries and can decline with ordinary wear.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Write down the exact model, generation, region, and storage version.
  • Find the official support page for that exact model and record its IP rating and exclusions.
  • Read the inner-screen and factory-film care instructions before handling a display unit.
  • Open and close the phone gently several times; check resistance, noise, wobble, alignment, and intended positions.
  • Inspect the crease, film, touch response, pixels, pressure marks, and hinge edges under normal light.
  • Ask whether a crease is considered normal for that model and which symptoms trigger warranty service.
  • Look up local authorized repair prices, protection-plan deductibles, warranty exclusions, parts availability, and service turnaround.
  • Treat cycle counts and new hinge architectures as model-specific evidence, not guarantees or universal rankings.

How to make a buying decision

Choose a foldable when its screen format or compactness is worth accepting stricter care and potentially higher repair exposure. Favor the model with the clearest local service path and the most transparent environmental limits, not simply the largest cycle number. If you regularly work around sand, grit, pools, or uncontrolled temperatures, the manufacturer’s particle and liquid warnings may outweigh a headline hinge claim. A careful inspection and a realistic repair budget provide more useful protection than assuming any foldable is permanently sealed or guaranteed for a fixed number of folds.
