There is no universal winner in foldable-phone cooling. Vapor chambers spread heat through evaporation and condensation, graphite sheets passively move heat through very thin layers, and fans add active airflow at the cost of space, power and moving parts. Foldable designs usually combine several of these techniques, and the right comparison is model-specific rather than a ranking of three technologies.
What each cooling method actually does
A phone cooler does not make heat disappear. It moves heat away from a concentrated source such as the application processor, modem or power-management circuitry, then gives that heat a larger area or an airflow path from which it can leave the device. In a foldable, the thermal path must fit around a hinge, flexible display, split batteries and a very thin enclosure.
Vapor chambers spread heat with a sealed fluid loop
A vapor chamber is a thin, sealed heat spreader containing a small amount of working fluid. When a hot component heats the chamber, the fluid evaporates. The vapor travels through the chamber to cooler regions, where it condenses and releases heat. The liquid then returns through an internal wick structure, allowing the cycle to continue without a pump.
OPPO describes this evaporation-and-condensation process in its Find X5 Pro cooling-system explanation and says that increasing chamber area helps distribute heat from components such as the processor. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 engineering article makes the same design point: a larger vapor chamber can dissipate heat more effectively and help a device maintain stable performance. Those are explanations of the mechanism and manufacturer design choices, not a controlled comparison of foldable phones.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
OPPO called the vapor chamber in the Find X5 Pro “the heart of the phone’s cooling system.” That statement applies to that conventional smartphone and should not be read as proof that a chamber is always the dominant part of every foldable’s thermal stack.
Graphite sheets provide thin, passive heat spreading
Graphite sheets are flat, passive layers that move heat laterally away from hot board areas. They can cover a broad surface while adding very little thickness, which is valuable where a foldable has limited clearance near the hinge and flexible display. Graphite does not create airflow or remove heat by itself; it makes the rest of the thermal path more effective by reducing localized hot spots.
ASUS describes enlarged and reshaped graphite sheets in the ROG Phone 6D to move heat from board areas. Samsung says its foldable line uses graphite with improved thermal performance and tailors the thermal structure to each device’s size and performance requirements in a September 9, 2026 engineering article published by Samsung Hong Kong. A graphite layer may work alongside a vapor chamber, frame, shielding, thermal interface material or other spreaders. The presence of graphite therefore does not establish that it outperforms a chamber.

A fan actively moves air. For an internal design, the phone needs an intake, a duct or channel over the heat source, an exhaust route and room for the motor and impeller. Active airflow can carry heat out of the enclosure more directly than a passive sheet, but it also consumes electrical power, creates acoustic noise and introduces a moving part that can collect dust or wear.
OPPO’s K13 Turbo Series illustrates an integrated design: a centrifugal fan and duct are paired with a vapor chamber and graphite. This is a conventional-phone example, not evidence that a particular foldable has enough internal volume for the same arrangement.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
There is a second category: an external cooler clipped onto a phone. ASUS documents a ROG Phone 6D accessory that places a fan over the chip and adds a Peltier thermoelectric element. A clip-on product is physically separate from the phone’s internal cooling stack, so its fit and usefulness depend on where the phone’s heat is located, how well the clip contacts the intended area and whether the case or hinge blocks the cooler.
Why foldables make thermal design harder
A slab phone can devote a broad, uninterrupted area to a board, battery and heat spreader. A foldable must operate in more than one physical configuration while accommodating a hinge, two display sections, flexible interconnects and components distributed across two halves. Thickness and internal volume are constrained in each half, and the thermal path may need to cross or work around the hinge.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 description links the phone’s two-part battery layout and limited thickness with a product-specific thermal design that includes a vapor chamber. The exact chamber geometry and the surrounding materials are not transferable to another model. A supplier case study from Gore, titled “Conquering Thermal Challenges in a Foldable Smartphone,” likewise presents insulation as compatible with graphite or vapor chambers while describing the difficulty of finding internal space. Because the device is unnamed and the document is a supplier case study, it should be treated as an example rather than a rule for all foldables.
Opening a foldable to add a chamber, graphite sheet or fan is not a practical consumer upgrade. Adhesives, seals, display layers, antenna routing and the hinge can be damaged, and a modified thermal stack may create pressure or clearance problems when the phone closes. Internal components should be considered part of the model’s engineered assembly, not interchangeable accessories.
Vapor chamber vs. graphite vs. fan
| Approach | How it moves heat | Advantages in a thin device | Trade-offs and requirements | Foldable evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vapor chamber | Fluid evaporates at a hot spot, condenses in cooler regions and returns through a wick. | Spreads heat over a larger area and can reduce concentration at the processor. | Needs internal volume, a sealed chamber and a compatible path to the frame or other heat-rejection surfaces. It spreads heat but does not eliminate it. | Samsung identifies a vapor chamber in Galaxy Z Fold6; OPPO explains the mechanism using Find X5 Pro documentation. |
| Graphite sheet | Passively conducts heat laterally through a very thin layer. | Low profile and easy to shape around tight board and hinge-adjacent spaces. | Cannot provide airflow or reject heat on its own; performance depends on contact and the rest of the thermal path. | Samsung describes graphite use in its foldable line; ASUS describes reshaped graphite in ROG Phone 6D. |
| Integrated fan | Moves air through an intake, duct and exhaust path over the heat source. | Active airflow can supplement passive spreaders during sustained loads. | Consumes power, needs space and vents, produces noise and adds moving parts. | OPPO documents a fan-and-duct system in the K13 Turbo Series, a non-foldable example. |
| External clip-on cooler | Fan, sometimes combined with a Peltier element, removes heat through the phone’s exterior. | Can add active cooling without opening the phone. | Fit, contact location, case thickness, hinge clearance and open/closed operation must all be checked. | ASUS documents a clip-on fan/Peltier accessory for ROG Phone 6D; compatibility with a foldable is not established. |
What the published numbers do—and do not—prove
Manufacturers publish model-specific improvements, but the available figures are not a common test of vapor chambers, graphite and fans in one foldable under identical conditions.

- OPPO says the Find X5 Pro’s vapor chamber is 75% larger than the previous generation. This is an OPPO comparison for a 2022-era conventional phone, not a foldable result.
- OPPO India says the K13 Turbo Series runs 2–4°C cooler in BGMI. This is a 2025 regional manufacturer claim for non-foldable phones using an integrated fan with passive thermal components.
- Samsung says a larger vapor chamber can dissipate heat more effectively and support stable performance in its Galaxy Z Fold6 engineering explanation, but it does not publish a cross-technology foldable ranking there.
Those figures must not be pooled into a single conclusion. A temperature difference depends on workload, ambient temperature, software limits, measurement location, phone case, battery state and test duration. A cooler surface at one spot can coexist with similar internal silicon temperature if heat has simply been redistributed.

1. Sustained performance under the same workload
Look for tests that run the same game, benchmark or camera task for a defined duration at the same ambient temperature. Short peak benchmarks mostly show burst behavior; foldable cooling matters most after the device has been loaded long enough for the chamber, graphite, frame and software controls to reach equilibrium.
2. Where heat is measured and felt
Check whether a review reports processor temperature, battery temperature, exterior temperature or only a subjective hot spot. In a foldable, note whether the heat is concentrated near one half, the hinge or the camera area, and whether the phone is open or closed during the test.
3. Physical and electrical costs
Record thickness, mass, hinge layout and battery arrangement alongside thermal results. For an integrated fan, include noise, power draw, vent placement and dust exposure. A design that sustains performance by consuming more battery may be preferable for gaming but undesirable for travel or ordinary daily use.

4. Configuration and software
Use the same performance mode, screen refresh rate, brightness and network condition when comparing devices. Thermal throttling is partly a software decision: two phones with similar hardware can impose different clock-speed or charging limits.
No published evidence here supplies a controlled head-to-head measurement across these axes for vapor chambers, graphite sheets and fans inside foldable phones. The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: judge the named model and its measured behavior, not a universal technology leaderboard.
Before buying an external cooler for a foldable
A clip-on cooler can be useful during long gaming sessions, but a product designed for a conventional gaming phone may not fit a foldable safely. Check every item below before attaching one.
- Measure both configurations. Confirm clearance with the phone fully open and fully closed if you intend to use both modes. The clip must not press on the hinge or flexible display.
- Check the contact zone. Find the manufacturer’s stated cooling area and compare it with the location of the processor and internal heat spreader. Exterior contact over an empty section of the shell may provide little benefit.
- Test with the case installed. A case can prevent the clip from gripping, hold the cooler away from the surface or force pressure onto the hinge. Remove it only if the cooler’s instructions and the phone maker’s warranty guidance allow that.
- Verify dimensions and mounting method. Confirm the supported width, clamp range, magnet or clip design and cable position. Do not assume a cooler listed for one phone fits another with a similar screen size.
- Plan for condensation and charging conflicts. A Peltier cooler can make its contact plate much colder than room temperature. In humid conditions, moisture can form on the phone or cooler. Keep the setup dry and check whether the cooler blocks the charging port.
- Allow airflow. Do not cover the cooler’s intake or exhaust with your hand, a pillow or a closed bag. An obstructed fan can add noise without moving useful air.
Stop using an accessory if the hinge feels constrained, the display shows pressure marks, the phone becomes unusually hot, or condensation appears. An external cooler is an add-on experiment, not a substitute for a model’s built-in thermal design.
Do foldable phones have cooling fans?
Some phones have built-in fans, but the existence of a fan in one product does not establish that foldables generally use them. OPPO’s K13 Turbo Series is an example of an integrated centrifugal fan and duct in a conventional phone. ASUS’s ROG Phone 6D documentation shows an external clip-on fan/Peltier accessory. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 documentation identifies a vapor chamber, while Samsung’s 2026 foldable engineering material discusses graphite. These examples demonstrate different approaches across named products, not a standard foldable architecture.

Space and noise make an internal fan a more involved choice in a foldable. The manufacturer must reserve room for the impeller, airflow path and openings while maintaining hinge reliability, ingress protection and comfortable handling. A passive stack using graphite, a vapor chamber and the frame avoids a motor, but it still needs a path to spread and reject heat.
Can graphite replace a vapor chamber?
Not as a general rule. Graphite and vapor chambers solve related but different parts of the thermal problem. Graphite offers an exceptionally thin spreading layer; a vapor chamber transports heat through a sealed phase-change cycle and can spread it across a larger chamber area. A phone may use both, with graphite moving heat away from board regions and a chamber carrying it toward a broader dissipation surface.
Neither manufacturer descriptions nor the model-specific figures above establish that every graphite implementation is better than every vapor chamber, or vice versa. The geometry, contact quality, heat source, frame materials and software limits determine the result.
Practical verdict
For foldable phones, vapor chambers are useful area-spreading devices, graphite sheets are thin passive complements, and fans are active systems that demand airflow, power and space. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 confirms that a foldable can incorporate a vapor chamber, and Samsung’s 2026 engineering discussion confirms graphite is part of its foldable thermal strategy. Other cited fan examples come from conventional phones or external accessories.
Choose by sustained measurements and physical compatibility for the exact model. Do not open a foldable to retrofit a thermal component, and do not attach a clip-on cooler until its clamp, case, hinge, contact area and open/closed operation have been verified.
