There is no fair answer to “Which is better?” until you identify the exact Huawei generation and market. Apple’s first foldable, iPhone Duo, was announced on September 9, 2026; preorders start October 16 and availability is scheduled for October 23. “Huawei Mate X” can mean the original device launched at MWC 2019 or a much later family member such as Mate X6. Those are different-era products, and the published specifications are not interchangeable.
Use this guide to compare the specific units you can actually buy: folded and open-screen usability, software and apps, hinge and water-resistance claims, cameras, battery evidence, price, warranty, repair options and network compatibility. Apple’s figures below are manufacturer specifications for iPhone Duo, while Huawei’s 7.93-inch, 6.45-inch and 239-gram figures belong specifically to Mate X6—not the 2019 Mate X. Start by naming the exact phone and date
Write the model name, generation, country and purchase date at the top of your comparison. This single step prevents the most common mistake: treating a 2019 launch device as if it were a current Mate X6 listing.
iPhone Duo: announced, with a date-sensitive launch status
Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. The announcement is dated September 9, 2026. Apple says preorders begin Friday, October 16, 2026, and availability begins Friday, October 23, 2026. On October 16, it is therefore an announced product entering preorder rather than a phone with an established retail history. If you are reading this after October 23, confirm that the date held in your country and that local stock is available.

Original Huawei Mate X: a 2019 product
Huawei’s corporate history records the HUAWEI Mate X launch at Mobile World Congress in February 2019. Huawei calls it a 5G foldable phone and describes a Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge, a 7nm multi-mode modem chipset and a GSMA “Best New Connected Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress 2019” award. “World’s fastest 5G foldable phone” is Huawei’s historical marketing wording, not a current independent performance result. Huawei Mate X6: a later family member, not the original Mate X
Huawei’s official Mate X6 specification page describes a substantially later device. It lists a 7.93-inch main screen, a 6.45-inch cover screen, approximately 239 grams, EMUI 15.0, 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. It also lists 50MP ultra-aperture and 40MP ultra-wide rear cameras, among other hardware. Use those numbers only when the box, listing or support page explicitly says Mate X6.

Compare the outside and inside screens separately
A foldable has two use cases. The cover screen handles tasks while the phone is closed; the inner screen is for extended reading, writing, multitasking and media. A single diagonal measurement cannot tell you whether either mode suits your hands or apps.
Outside-screen questions
Apple lists a 5.4-inch outer display for iPhone Duo. Huawei lists a 6.45-inch cover display for Mate X6. Those figures suggest different priorities, but they do not by themselves prove that one is easier to type on or more comfortable to hold. Compare the exact closed dimensions, aspect ratio, keyboard height, one-handed reach and the amount of content visible without opening the phone.
- Open the camera, maps, messages and authentication app while the phone is closed.
- Type a complete sentence with both thumbs and check whether keys, cursor controls and autocorrect behave as you expect.
- Read a long message or boarding pass without repeatedly unfolding the device.
- Check whether your most-used apps preserve their state when you open the inner display.
Inside-screen questions
Apple lists a 7.6-inch inner display for Duo. Mate X6’s published main-screen figure is 7.93 inches. The small diagonal difference is less important than how each operating system lays out content, whether an app supports a two-column view and how the hinge position affects typing or video.
Ask a retailer to demonstrate your own workload rather than a promotional animation. Put a document beside a browser, rotate the phone, edit a photo, and switch between a video and a message. If an app simply enlarges its phone layout, the extra area may not save time. If it supports a deliberate tablet-style layout, the inner screen may be more useful.

Crease, glare and brightness
Apple describes a precision hinge and a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and the visible crease. It also lists ProMotion, Always On displays and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. These are Apple’s specifications and descriptions, not independent measurements. Ask to view the display under direct light and at an angle; do not convert a peak-brightness number into a promise about sustained brightness or battery life.

Check software, apps and your existing ecosystem
The phone that fits your accounts and daily applications is usually more useful than the one with the larger specification number. The available source material confirms iPhone Duo runs iOS 27. Huawei’s cited Mate X6 page lists EMUI 15.0. It does not establish the original Mate X’s current software version, app availability, update duration or regional services.
Inventory before you buy
- List banking, government-identification, password-manager, work, medical, transit, messaging and two-factor-authentication apps.
- Check the developer’s current support page for the exact operating system and country. A web version is not necessarily equivalent to an app that uses secure hardware, notifications or contactless features.
- Record the accounts, cloud storage and subscriptions tied to your present phone. Confirm that export and migration tools support the destination system.
- Check accessory dependence: watches, earbuds, car interfaces, styluses, cases and chargers may have different compatibility or feature levels after a platform change.
iOS 27 and Apple Pencil support
Apple says Duo uses iOS 27. Apple also announced support for Apple Pencil with USB-C later in 2026 for notes, sketching and document markup on either display. That is future announced support, not proof that the accessory is bundled, available on October 16, or sold with identical features in every country. Ask the seller for the supported Pencil model and release status before treating it as part of the purchase.
EMUI and the Huawei generation issue
EMUI 15.0 is listed for Mate X6 on Huawei’s cited regional specification page. Do not apply that version to the 2019 Mate X without checking the exact unit’s software screen and Huawei’s support information for your country. Imported phones can also have different services, bands, warranty terms and update channels from locally sold versions.

What Apple publishes for Duo
Apple describes titanium construction, Ceramic Shield protection, an IP68 rating and a hinge engineered from more than 100 components. It calls the hinge precision-designed and says the nano-texture finish helps reduce the visible crease. These statements describe Apple’s design intent and rated protection. They do not establish how a particular unit will age after years of folding, how repairs are priced or how the phone behaves after a drop.
What Huawei publishes for the family
Huawei’s original Mate X history identifies a Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge. The cited Mate X6 page supplies screen, weight, software, memory and camera specifications but does not provide an independent fold-cycle comparison. Do not infer that the original hinge and X6 hinge have the same construction or reliability.
Inspection checklist
- Fold and unfold the display slowly while listening for clicks, scraping or uneven resistance.
- View a white page and a dark image at several angles; look for a defect that remains in one area rather than assuming every visible crease has the same cause.
- Check the hinge alignment when closed and whether both halves sit evenly.

Questions for a store or reviewer
- Was the test performed on retail software and a production unit?
- What brightness, refresh mode, cellular signal, video resolution and app loop were used?
- Was the phone tested folded, open or in a mixture of both modes?
- Does the result describe a one-time laboratory run or repeated independent testing?
For your own trial, begin with the same charge level, use your normal apps for an hour closed and an hour open, and record screen-on time rather than relying on a manufacturer capacity figure that is not published here.
Check storage, weight and connectivity on the exact listing
Mate X6’s cited specification lists approximately 239 grams, 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The available Duo announcement details used here do not state its weight, RAM or storage tiers. The original Mate X’s corresponding figures are also not established here.
Before paying, read the complete regional specification sheet. Confirm cellular bands, 5G support, physical SIM and eSIM arrangements, Wi-Fi standards, NFC, charging accessories and storage expansion. A phone that lacks a band used by your carrier, or that has a region-specific service restriction, is not equivalent to the same model sold elsewhere.
Price, warranty and repair can change the decision

Is Huawei Mate X still worth buying?
For the original 2019 Mate X, the answer depends almost entirely on verification.
