Paint companies generally carry a more concentrated crude-linked input risk than FMCG companies. Economic Times reporting published on 8 April 2025 put petroleum derivatives at an estimated 40% of paint-company input costs, versus 20–25% for an FMCG firm. Those are dated sector estimates, not audited current sensitivities for every listed company. FMCG exposure is more mixed: detergents, personal-care products, packaging and freight can track crude derivatives, while foods and other categories also depend on crops, edible oils, medicinal plants, honey and other inputs.
For investors, that means a crude-price chart is only a starting point. Product mix, supplier concentration, inventory and hedging, pricing decisions, and the resulting volume response determine how an individual stock’s margins behave.
What the comparison actually measures
The useful distinction is concentration versus diversity, not “oil-sensitive stocks” versus “oil-insensitive stocks.” Paint formulations use a larger, more concentrated set of petrochemical-derived materials, according to the sector estimate reported by Economic Times in 2025. FMCG companies span foods, beverages, personal care, home care and other categories, so their cost baskets differ sharply from one another.

How crude oil reaches each sector’s cost base
Petrochemical derivatives and packaging
Oil is rarely purchased directly by a consumer-goods or paint company. Refineries and chemical producers turn crude and natural-gas feedstocks into solvents, resins, surfactants, polymers and other intermediates. Those materials can enter a paint formulation directly or appear in detergent and personal-care ingredients. Plastic bottles, caps, films, laminates and other packaging add another route.
Packaging does not move one-for-one with the headline crude price. Conversion, processing, resin availability, contracts, electricity and freight can keep packaging costs elevated after crude falls. Sushil Kumar Bajpai of RSPL Group told The Economic Times in April 2025: “The lower crude price will be passed to end consumers but crude derivates have not gone down proportionally since there is an additional processing cost involved.” The spelling “derivates” is retained from the published quote.
Freight and logistics
Fuel affects the cost of moving ingredients, packaging and finished goods. In a June 2025 report, Business Standard said freight and packaging could account for up to 20% of FMCG companies’ costs. “Up to” is important: it is a reported upper range, not a universal share for every company or product.
Mayank Shah, vice-president at Parle Products, told Business Standard in June 2025: “A major portion of the impact of higher crude oil prices is seen in freight and packaging costs.” A company with local sourcing, shorter delivery routes or efficient distribution may therefore experience a different shock from one with longer or more import-dependent supply chains.
Why FMCG input risk is heterogeneous
Foods and beverages
Food makers can be more exposed to agricultural and edible-oil cycles than to petrochemicals. Crop yields, weather, export restrictions, import duties, currency movements and harvest timing all affect procurement. Crude still matters through flexible packaging, transport and some processing inputs, but it may not be the dominant variable for a food-heavy portfolio.
Home-care products
Detergents and cleaners commonly use surfactants, fragrances, plastic packs and other materials with petrochemical links. A crude rally can therefore pressure both the formula and the pack. The actual effect depends on the supplier’s feedstock, contract period and ability to substitute materials, so a sector average cannot be converted into a precise company sensitivity.
Personal care
Personal-care companies combine oils, waxes, fragrances, polymers, packaging and sometimes agricultural or botanical inputs. Premium products may have more formulation complexity and imported ingredients; mass products may have greater price sensitivity among shoppers. These differences affect both cost transmission and the company’s willingness to raise prices.

Examples from company disclosures
Dabur’s annual-report risk disclosures identify medicinal plants and honey as supply risks. The same disclosure framework discusses supplier availability, concentration, alternate sourcing, inventory buffers and packaging compliance. These are examples of FMCG risks that a crude-only model would miss.
Marico’s FY2024–25 report attributed margin moderation partly to copra and vegetable-oil prices and described partial mitigation from pricing. That disclosure illustrates why an investor should read the named commodity and the company’s response rather than assume that all FMCG margins follow petroleum.
Why paint companies often look more oil-sensitive
Paint manufacturing uses resins, solvents, additives and pigments. A larger portion of the raw-material basket is connected to petrochemical chains than in a diversified FMCG group, which is why the 2025 Economic Times estimate placed petroleum derivatives at 40% of paint-company input costs. This concentration can make gross-margin pressure more visible when crude-linked materials rise together.
That does not make every paint stock identical. Water-based and solvent-based products have different formulations; decorative and industrial portfolios serve different customers; local and imported purchases carry different currency and freight exposures; and long-term contracts can delay repricing. The available sector estimate does not provide a current, audited breakdown for each paint manufacturer, so it cannot support a ranking of today’s most exposed stock.
Why the cost shock does not appear immediately
Hedging and procurement windows
Business Standard reported in 2025 that FMCG companies may hedge raw-material positions for three to six months, depending on the commodity. This is a reported practice range, not a rule for every company. A hedge can delay both the benefit of falling prices and the pain of rising prices.
Inventory on hand
Existing inventory was purchased at an earlier price. When it is consumed, the income statement may reflect the older cost first and the new cost later. Companies with longer inventory coverage can therefore show a different quarter-to-quarter pattern from companies that buy more frequently.
Price-change timing
Management may wait to see whether a shock is temporary before changing list prices. A rapid increase can reduce affordability, alter pack sizes or shift consumers to lower-priced products. A delayed response protects volumes in the short run but can compress gross margin; an immediate increase protects unit economics but risks demand.

How pass-through affects margins, volumes and mix
When input costs rise, management has several levers: raise prices, reduce promotions, change pack sizes, alter product mix, reformulate, negotiate with suppliers or accept lower margin. None is free. A price increase can preserve gross margin per unit while reducing units sold or moving shoppers to cheaper brands. Lower promotions can improve realized pricing but weaken visibility. Reformulation may reduce cost but can affect product performance or consumer acceptance.
When costs fall, companies do not necessarily cut shelf prices immediately. They may rebuild margins after a period of compression, increase advertising, restore promotions or invest in distribution. Bajpai’s comment about processing costs explains why a lower crude quotation may not translate proportionally into lower derivative prices.
There is no universal pass-through percentage or demand elasticity established by the cited sources. Treat the relationship as company-specific and examine reported price, volume and mix trends together.
How do crude oil prices affect FMCG and paint companies?
The first channel is the cost of materials derived from petrochemical feedstocks. The second is packaging: bottles, films, laminates, caps and other plastic components. The third is freight, because fuel changes the cost of moving inputs and finished products. Paint makers generally experience greater concentration in the first channel, while FMCG companies can have a lower crude-derivative share but more varied exposure to agricultural commodities and sourcing conditions.
The effect on profit is not simply the percentage change in crude multiplied by the reported cost share. Processing, conversion, contracts, inventory, hedges, currency and supplier margins intervene between crude and the invoice paid by the company. The same crude move can therefore produce different gross-margin outcomes across issuers and even across product categories within one issuer.

What should investors compare beyond the headline percentages?
Start with the composition of the cost basket. For an FMCG company, identify whether foods, personal care, home care or packaging-heavy products dominate sales. For a paint company, distinguish decorative and industrial coatings and note the balance between water-based and solvent-based products. Then ask how much of the relevant material is imported, whether purchases are concentrated among a few suppliers and how long an alternative source would take to qualify.
Next, examine protection against timing risk. A hedge or fixed-price contract can smooth a quarter, but it does not remove exposure when the agreement expires. Inventory buffers can provide continuity during a supply disruption, yet they also tie up working capital. A company with shorter purchase cycles may show a faster but cleaner response to market prices than one carrying older stock.

Finally, compare the operating response. Did management raise prices, cut promotions, change pack sizes or accept lower margin? Did reported pricing offset the input increase, and what happened to volume and mix? A margin that improves only because prices rose while volumes fell may be less durable than an improvement accompanied by stable demand.
A six-part framework for analysing an individual stock
- Map the product mix. Separate foods, beverages, personal care, home care, decorative paints, industrial coatings and other categories. Estimate which products use petrochemical derivatives, agricultural commodities or imported materials.
- Identify the material inputs. Read the annual report, notes and earnings transcripts for named exposures such as copra, vegetable oils, medicinal plants, honey, resins, solvents, surfactants, polymers and packaging films. Do not substitute a sector average for a company disclosure.
- Check sourcing concentration. Look for dependence on a single supplier, country, crop, port or specification. Record alternate-sourcing arrangements, supplier concentration and any inventory buffer described by management.
- Measure timing protection. Note hedge duration, fixed-price contracts, purchase cycles and inventory days where disclosed. A three-to-six-month hedge reference from Business Standard should not be assumed to apply to a particular issuer without evidence.
- Assess pricing power and willingness. Track list-price changes, grammage or pack-size adjustments, promotional intensity and management comments about consumer acceptance. A company may have the theoretical ability to raise prices but choose not to during weak demand.
- Watch the operating response. Compare gross margin, EBITDA margin, reported price, volume and mix after a cost move. A margin improvement driven only by price, with falling volume, has a different quality from improvement accompanied by stable or rising volume.
How to read a company’s reports for input-cost risk
- Start with the risk-management section and list every raw material, packaging input and logistics risk named by the company.
- Move to the business review and record whether margin changes were attributed to commodity costs, pricing, mix, advertising or foreign exchange.
- Check procurement language for hedges, contracts, alternate suppliers and inventory coverage. “Hedged” does not mean permanently protected; it means the timing and price exposure have been altered.
- Compare two or more quarters. One quarter may reflect old inventory or a temporary promotion rather than the current commodity environment.
- Separate management’s expectation from an observed result. A planned price increase is not the same as realized pricing, and an analyst estimate is not company guidance.
- Build a simple sensitivity narrative: which input rises, when it reaches the income statement, what action management can take, and what volume or mix consequence could follow.
What different crude-price scenarios can and cannot tell you
Crude rises quickly
Paint companies may face a more synchronized raw-material increase because of their higher reported crude-derivative concentration. FMCG outcomes can diverge: detergents and plastic-heavy categories may feel pressure, while a food company’s main issue could be edible oil or a crop instead. Freight and packaging can add pressure across both groups.

Crude falls quickly
The benefit may be delayed by hedges, inventory and processing costs. A company could first use the relief to restore margin, increase promotions or support distribution rather than cut prices. The timing of the benefit is therefore as important as the direction of crude.
Crude is stable but another commodity spikes
This is where a crude-only screen can fail. Copra, vegetable oils, medicinal plants, honey, pigments, freight or currency can dominate a company’s cost movement even while oil is unchanged. Read the company’s own commodity list before drawing a sector conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes when comparing FMCG and paint stocks
- Applying 40% to every paint company. The figure is a dated sector estimate, not an audited current ratio for each issuer.
- Applying 20–25% to every FMCG company. FMCG is a collection of categories with very different agricultural, packaging and formulation exposure.
- Assuming a same-quarter impact. Hedges, inventory and procurement contracts can shift the timing by months.
- Equating lower crude with immediate consumer savings. Derivative processing, freight, contracts and competitive strategy affect retail pricing.
- Ignoring demand. Price increases can defend gross margin but reduce volume, change mix or move shoppers to cheaper products.
- Ranking stocks from sector averages alone. The decisive evidence is company-specific: materials, sourcing, timing protection, pricing and volume response.
- Treating estimates as outcomes. An analyst’s projected price-hike requirement is not a reported price change, management guidance or realized margin result.
Which sector is more exposed to raw-material costs?
On the limited, dated sector estimates available, paints show the higher concentration of crude-linked input costs: 40% versus 20–25% for an FMCG firm. FMCG nevertheless has broader commodity and sourcing exposure, so a particular FMCG stock can be more vulnerable than a particular paint stock when its dominant agricultural input, packaging material or freight bill moves against it.
The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: paints are usually the clearer crude-derivative sensitivity, while FMCG requires a product-by-product and company-by-company diagnosis. No current audited comparison in the cited material establishes which named stock is most exposed today.

Do all FMCG stocks have the same raw-material risk?
No. Foods and beverages can be driven by crops and edible oils, while detergents, personal care and packaging may have stronger petrochemical links. Dabur and Marico disclosures illustrate risks from medicinal plants, honey, copra and vegetable oils in addition to crude-linked costs.
Why can a lower crude price fail to reduce costs immediately?
Hedges, existing inventory, supplier contracts, processing charges, freight and conversion costs can delay or reduce the benefit. RSPL Group’s Sushil Kumar Bajpai said in April 2025 that crude derivatives had not fallen proportionally because of additional processing costs.
How long can hedging delay an FMCG input-cost impact?
Business Standard reported that FMCG companies may hedge raw-material positions for three to six months, depending on the commodity. The period is a reported practice range, not a rule that applies to every issuer.
Does raising prices always protect margins?
No. Pricing can protect gross margin per unit but reduce demand, change pack or brand mix, or push shoppers toward cheaper alternatives. Investors should compare realized pricing with volume and mix, not look at price increases alone.
What should I check before comparing a specific paint or FMCG stock?
Review product mix, named raw materials, crude-linked and agricultural exposure, supplier and import concentration, hedge and inventory duration, pricing actions, and subsequent gross margin, volume and mix. Sector averages cannot establish which stock is most exposed today.
The Bottom Line
Paints have the clearer, more concentrated crude-derivative exposure in the dated sector estimates: 40% of input costs versus 20–25% for an FMCG firm. FMCG risk is less uniform and can be dominated by crops, edible oils, botanical inputs, packaging or freight. Treat the percentages as starting hypotheses, then test each company’s materials, sourcing, hedging, pricing and volume response.
