Why can FMCG revenues rise while margins fall?
Revenue measures sales; an operating margin measures the share of those sales left after operating expenses. A company can sell more, or charge higher prices, and still earn a smaller operating-profit share if its costs increase faster than revenue.
For example, higher prices may lift revenue even if the number of units sold is unchanged. If the costs of ingredients, packaging, freight or other operations also rise, the added sales may not translate into proportionate operating profit. The outcome depends on how much cost inflation the company absorbs, offsets through efficiencies, or passes on to customers.

What Q2 outlook is actually supported?
Rediff Markets reported on October 6, 2026, that double-digit Q2 growth was expected at leading FMCG companies including Dabur, Marico and Godrej Consumer Products, and noted input-cost inflation. A useful point of comparison is Dabur India Limited’s Q1 FY27 report, released July 29, 2026. Dabur reported consolidated revenue of ₹3,764 crore, up 10.6% year over year, while its India FMCG business grew 9.5%. The company also described persistent inflationary pressure and volatile commodity markets. Its CEO said cost management, operational efficiencies and price increases helped support profit growth. Those figures and comments describe Dabur’s Q1, not the Q2 results of Dabur or the wider sector.

Which costs and business choices matter?
- Input costs: Commodity and other input-price changes can raise the cost of making products. The effect varies with each company’s products and exposure.
- Freight and operating expenses: Higher distribution or other operating costs can reduce the profit left from sales, even when revenue is growing.
- Pricing: Price increases can help offset higher costs, but their contribution to revenue is different from growth in units sold.
- Volume and product mix: More units sold and a shift toward higher- or lower-margin products can change profitability independently of headline revenue growth.
- Cost control and efficiencies: Operational improvements can help counter inflation, as Dabur said they did in Q1 FY27.
- Geography: Companies with different regional sales mixes can face different market conditions and cost pressures.
These factors make a single sector headline an incomplete guide to individual companies. Revenue growth alone does not show whether growth came from volumes, prices or mix, nor whether operating profit kept pace.

When Q2 figures become available, compare like with like: the same quarter, the same company, and the same reporting basis. Keep consolidated figures separate from India-only business figures. For each company, check whether a number is a reported result, management update or analyst estimate.

Godrej Consumer Products’ investor page listed Q2 FY27 materials and an investor conference scheduled for October 29, 2026. Marico’s investor page also listed a Q2 FY27 quarterly update, but the update’s contents were not available in the information cited here. These listings indicate reporting activity; they do not establish that either company had released results.
