HDFC Securities expects roughly 12% year-on-year revenue growth across its covered FMCG companies in Q2 FY27 (July–September 2026), helped by a softer base and selective price increases. That is a brokerage forecast—not an industry result or a guarantee that every stock will rise. The same preview warns that sugar, edible oils, packaging, freight and crude-linked inputs could erode margins, leaving sales growth and earnings growth out of sync.

What the 12% FMCG growth forecast actually means

The 12% figure comes from HDFC Securities’ October 2026 forecast for its own FMCG coverage universe. It is not an all-company consensus, an official market statistic or a reported Q2 result. Indian companies with an April–March financial year call July–September 2026 “Q2 FY27.” At the time of this preview, results had not been reported; Nestlé India told the exchanges it planned to announce its quarter on October 15, 2026.

HDFC Securities described the sector as underweight, citing weak earnings visibility and a waning competitive moat. Its view is that valuation de-rating has made operational improvement important. The brokerage expects a stronger topline because the year-ago comparison is softer and companies have implemented incremental price increases, while warning that input inflation could limit profit delivery.

As HDFC Securities put it, “FMCG sector valuations continue to de-rate amid weak earnings visibility and a waning moat. We maintain our underweight stance and see performance improvement as critical for valuation. Q2 topline is likely to be stronger on a low base and incremental price hikes.”

Which FMCG stocks have the strongest Q2 outlook?

HDFC Securities’ preferred names were Nestlé India, Godrej Consumer Products, Britannia Industries, Honasa Consumer, Emami and Bikaji Foods. Preference does not mean each company is expected to deliver stronger earnings or a guaranteed share-price gain. The following figures are forecasts published before results.

Company Forecast or preview detail What to watch
Nestlé India 21% revenue growth forecast from HDFC Securities; other brokerages reported ₹6,765–₹6,809 crore revenue and ₹1,022–₹1,034 crore PAT estimates, equal to about 20–21% and 37–38% growth respectively. Domestic volume, premiumisation, coffee costs, mix, cost efficiency and international growth.
Godrej Consumer Products 18% revenue growth forecast from HDFC Securities. Whether sales growth converts into EBITDA as crude-derived and other input costs rise.
Britannia Industries 12% revenue growth forecast from HDFC Securities; a separate preview expected strong double-digit growth against a weak comparison. Sugar and palmolein inflation, pricing, volume and margin movement.
Honasa Consumer Included in HDFC Securities’ preferred list; a specific Q2 growth rate was not stated. Revenue quality, profitability and the effect of input and marketing costs.
Emami Preferred by HDFC Securities; the brokerage expected single-digit earnings growth. Domestic demand, pricing and EBITDA/PAT conversion.
Bikaji Foods Preferred by HDFC Securities despite a forecast 15% decline in adjusted PAT; the October 7 summary cited a ₹700 target and 39% implied upside based on then-current price data. Margin pressure, volume, raw-material inflation and whether the target assumptions remain valid.

The Bikaji combination illustrates why a target price is not the same as an earnings forecast: a brokerage can see long-term valuation potential while expecting near-term profit contraction. The ₹700 target and 39% calculation were time-sensitive figures anchored to prices available on October 7, 2026, not current prices or promised returns.

Why revenue can rise while earnings fall

Revenue growth can come from additional units, higher prices, a richer product mix, acquisitions or currency effects. Profit depends on what remains after commodities, packaging, freight, employee costs and other expenses. HDFC Securities forecast earnings declines for ITC, Bikaji Foods and Gopal Snacks, while expecting single-digit earnings growth for Hindustan Unilever, Dabur and Emami. The divergence means investors should read the income statement beyond net sales.

ITC: volume and tax effects matter

HDFC Securities’ October 12 preview described cigarette gross revenue growth being offset by excise-related pressure on net sales and forecast an 8% volume decline. The key checks are reported net sales, cigarette volumes, gross-to-net revenue effects and operating margins rather than gross revenue alone.

Britannia was expected to show improved net sales against a weak comparison. Sugar and palmolein inflation were identified as risks that could prevent equivalent profit growth.

Marico: high-base growth and copra exposure

HDFC Securities expected about 12% domestic revenue growth for Marico against a high base, with roughly 10% volume growth. ICICI Direct highlighted Marico as a possible relative beneficiary of lower copra costs and a better mix, while still warning that crude derivatives and other inputs could pressure home- and personal-care margins across the sector.

The cost pressures that could decide Q2 margins

Economic Times identified sugar, edible oils, packaging and freight as sector-wide pressure points. ICICI Direct added crude derivatives and other input prices, particularly for home- and personal-care companies. Company exposure differs: food producers are more sensitive to sugar and edible oils, while household and personal-care products often track crude-linked materials and packaging. Coffee prices were specifically relevant to Nestlé India, and copra costs to Marico.

Watch gross margin, EBITDA margin and adjusted PAT together. A company can protect revenue with price increases but lose volume, or preserve volume while absorbing costs and reporting weaker margins. The most informative result commentary will separate price, mix and volume instead of presenting only a consolidated sales percentage.

How to compare the stocks after results

  1. Separate volume from price and mix. Determine whether growth reflects more units, higher prices, premium products or a soft base.
  2. Check profit conversion. Compare revenue growth with EBITDA and PAT growth, and read the margin bridge for commodities, freight and packaging.
  3. Identify geographic drivers. Nestlé India’s domestic and international growth are explicitly different, so consolidated growth should not be treated as a single demand signal.
  4. Adjust for the base. A weak year-ago quarter can make percentage growth look unusually high; a high base can make healthy operating progress appear modest.
  5. Revisit valuation assumptions. Brokerage targets depend on the reference price, earnings estimates and valuation multiple at the publication date. They are not expected or realized investor returns.

What could invalidate the bullish case?

  • Commodity inflation rises faster than price increases can offset it.
  • Price hikes reduce volumes or push consumers toward cheaper products.
  • International growth or currency movements fail to support consolidated sales.
  • Promotional spending, freight or packaging costs expand faster than revenue.
  • Results meet sales estimates but miss EBITDA or PAT expectations.
  • Market prices move before results, making previously reported target-price upside outdated.

What investors should verify on result day

Use the company exchange filing and management commentary to replace every estimate with reported revenue, volume, EBITDA, PAT, margins and guidance. Compare the actual quarter with the specific brokerage assumptions rather than with the 12% sector headline. Also check whether the result date, commodity environment and share price have changed since the October 6–13 previews.
